This is one of my favorite episodes. Rarely do we see someone stick to their budget and the repercussions that come with that decision. It’s a glimpse of real life, extreme talent, and the wisdom of knowing when to walk away. I hope this home is now finished and the owners appreciate the rich history, stunning landscape, and architectural genius of this unique space.
Loved this While not nearly as old as this Ice House. Growing up, I remember my grandfather would come to pick me up early in the morning every July4th. The job? Go to the ice house in the next town to pick up a twenty five pound block of ice. This was the late 60's early 70's. It gave me more time to spend with my grandfather. I loved getting to hear his stories about him growing up. The Great Depression, WWII, and his life after the war. I never once saw him angry or cross with anyone. We would buy a 25 pound block and we'd put it in the trunk of his car on a piece of carpet for the trip back. We'd bring it home and put it in the sanitary sink in the basement. Then it was my job to break out the ice pick and chop it into pieces so we could put all of our drinks on ice for the parade that came down his street. Now, many people would just buy bags of ice from 7/11. But this was actually cheaper than that and it gave me more time to spend listening to his days as a merchant marine on the Atlantic Ocean during the war. Why so early? We had to be back 7 as the police would shut down his street since it was part of the parade route, which started at 8
A creative way of recycling an old building that may very well have been torn down. His friend was there for him -financially speaking-when he needed it the most, added gratitude into the the very fibre of the love already there in an amazingly special home. Putting the sauna in that dip was a brilliant idea. I do so hope he’ll be able to keep it.
I adore and value George Clarke's work with these presentations. What a lovely, enthusiastic fan of historic agricultural & ecclesiastical architecture!
Every time they showed the exterior of the ice house, I almost expected to see Tele-Tubbies running and tumbling down the hill. What a cool structure. Wish we could've seen the finished product. Hats off to Laird.
A great example of the renovation of a ruin with historic value, resulting in a delightfully quirky residence for an individual or minimalist couple set admids gorgeous coastal surrounds. Apparently the home was placed for sale in 2018 for 250k and as of today's date is no longer available. If it has new owners, congratulations, I'm a little envious and as for the hard working owner, all the best for future endeavours. Please save another!
I hope he finishes it one day. I love how he doesn’t give up, and even if he doesn’t finish it, it was the work he put in, the time, and the masterpiece he created.
1833 Ice House, neat. What a wonderful man. If I'm stuck on a desert island, I want him...he can do everything. Frodo Baggins would love it, I know I do. Would have loved to have seen the completed home.
I have been waiting for this, was wondering about that house with the glass barrel at the end that they kept showing. I love the whole build, even the temporary buildings. Not really so fond of the glass; but the stone , grass and moss, even fencing, is so lovely.
Yeah...for real....the choice to get the high tech glass was a no brainer, and it came out so good. I'm not surprised that it wasn't finished. Hahahahaha I'm not disappointed. Hahaha I love all his sculptures around. He should have a bigger deck. Nothing like a big deck. Hahaha Get a grill on there and catch a fresh Scottish salmon. Spread mayonnaise on the fillet and dill all over the top. Grill it up. Get a diet coke with ice. Livin' the dream!!!!!!!
While the glass space is lovely, the rest of the space is, well, a cave. The light holes add a bit of light but I can’t imagine living in such a dark depressing space. I would have put on a glass roof. Or better still,, just build a house on the site. A lot of work for not much of a result I’d say even thought Laird’s effort is heroic and deserves to be admired.
Of course he does. He has a beautiful spot of land. Lovely glass room. His energy has run out unfortunately. He will gather himself and finish it. Seems happy and content with what he has done so far.
The committee ( no matter where) always put their two cents. While a property is abandoned and falling apart(dangerous); they are ignored. But as soon as someone wants to buy and improve it. All kind of regulations appears. Outrageous prices are applied. Greetings from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
Maybe I missed it but was there a reason he did the expensive glass area first? It is beautiful for sure...but at such an expensive risk it seems it would have been better to wait until the end.
I think it was the primary way to heat the house. Since it is colder climate you would need the heat. I agree with your point. I think the interior could have been finished with another way to heat it and then the glass done when he had the money but I would have tried to get to blend in with both the ice house and landscape.
A beautiful place and what a fun yard to have...great for kids. The glass extension is wonderful, but the structures in the background need to go to expose the wonderful approach view. I see no reason why money would be an issue with the owner.
Hahahaha Yeah. Money is never an issue if you have it. Hahaha How about that as a reason dolt? Haha can I have 25,000 pounds? I'm helping save the planet in NYC.

@@darwhel Wow such an unusual house. I mean I'm sorry if he had to sell it, lots of work in it. But, yes, that's a nice chunk of money. Thanks for the update.
As beautiful as that glass is I don't think it was worth half the budget. This guy has great DIY skillsand is very thrifty--but even DIY still needs SOME money for materials.
how despicable to kick him out of the caravan. WHY? i love this man...he is not taking stupidity (i m referring to the idiotic bureaucrats on planning committee) lying down. HE CUT into the rock to place glass-blown away by his imagination.
Ten years later, I wonder if the building was finished. 2022 is a year of news of oligarchs - greedy men with empty heads and hearts and not a shred of substance spending buckets of cash on frivolous things. And here you have a man of true substance and character and skills unable to finish this historic building. Ironic that this man of substance couldn’t find the funds to build, I wonder how it all turned out.
If he's not going to get to live in it, then he could just sell it as is and let the next owner worry about the headaches. His dream was RUINED by extravagant glass. He probably could have used the expensive glass on the top and made the sides of the porch out of something more reasonable. That glass flooring was a waste of money, though cool to look at. I think he's burnt out on this project. Just wondering, why is the ceiling so low in the bedroom?
Think the show should give him the 40K to finish it, since he was talked into an expensive ass glass setup. Wonder how much the kickback was selling him on the glass, you just don't show up with a working model and pitch a glass like that out the blue.

What a brilliant CHARACTER! It doesn't matter what the outcome is, this man lives life the way it should be lived. Loved this episode.
Perfectly illustrates that sometimes, the journey, rather than the destination, is the point. Much praise, Laird!

So many of these builds really test the human spirit proving what we are capable of when chasing a dream with everything We’ve got.
Counsels and planning committees always seems to destroy dreams
For the wealthy
Scotland IS proud of it. It's so beautiful.
That guy has so many skills, welder, diver, carpenter, engineer, mechanic, and electrician 😮
I’m almost surprised he didn’t make the glass himself.
It’s awesome that he could continue the work on the icehouse and do it his way.👍 I’m sure the finished product will be amazing!

On the market in 2021, sounds as if still not fully completed. I think one of its drawbacks is lack of light inside

Here in South Texas, the glass room they're building is a "solar oven." And all of it totally powered by the sun.
