This episode is a classic example of taking on more than you can afford.
Some people are so critical of this lovely couple. They’re young, work hard and did their best to achieve their dream. I think this home is beautiful. I really hope things got better financially for them and that they got to live in this lovely community ❤️
If half the people who take on these projects actually knew what they were doing, they would not take the project on. In a strange way this has actually saved quite a lot of old buildings that would otherwise have been lost. I am glad this couple found a way to make the building pay, they literally jumped off a financial cliff that nearly ruined them.
I recon this one was down to lack of proper research, into church and vintage building restorations and under budgeting. You could see that their 135k budget wasn't going to be enough on this. From what i have watched, from these projects, you be wanting to have 400k budget, just as a safe guard in case any horrors like what happened here with the roof and spiral. If i was going to take something like this on, id have been chatting to a few people who have done this sort of thing 1st, before id have even bought it. But fare play on them doing it mind, but i recon the love and vision was destroyed when it became a runner way train with the financial side of things. Just get it finished and get shot, by the end due to the financial situation they were in. Been lucky not to have lost everything.
When you want to sell something, especially antique, you clean it and wax/stain/polish it. She could have probably tripled the income on the historic pews.
At least get the dirt off them
Pews are a hard sell, very little demand for them!
@@cappsginny699 They make excellent entry benches, covered patio benches, gazebo benches, summer garden art with a marine style weather varnish, and benches for long tables and big families.
Financial worries are one of the worst stress factors. Phil looks like he has really suffered. I hope they have solved their problems and are happy, where ever they are living now.
The most beautiful part of the building was used as a kitchen. Imagine admiring those beautiful windows gracing that amazing curved wall while you stir the pancake batter.

I think they ended up selling it on, not long afterwards. Its been sold twice in the last couple of years, so it must be very expensive to live in.

Why so judgmental. They may have struggled but they succeeded in the end And saved a beautiful historic building. I don’t think they deserve anything except applause for that.
Hmmm ... so, start the work just before winter sets in. Building not waterproof or windproof. Under-funded. Guy away for weeks at a time. Lady expecting another baby soon. Future brother-in-law never project managed before. Am I missing something in this plan??

Why would anyone with any commonsense take a roof off with valuable furnishings inside to be ruined by water damage ? Unbelievable.
yeah id have cleared the place out 1st before even touching the roof. They lost a few quid right there with the water damage.
Watching these just reinforces the fact that i would never do something like this.....And i live in an 1850's church that was re habbed by someone else
This restoration certainly emphasizes the need to have a building inspector and, especially in the case of large antique buildings, an engineering report plus a complete list of all permits required. The offer to buy should include those as conditions with the appropriate escape clauses. Granted it would probably discourage many from attempting the restoration.
George is so knowledgeable, and love how he jumps in to help. To think of it, this was all being done before Zoom. It's amazing how so many people buy these buildings not having a clue as to how to renovate. "Golden Rule: Be THERE!" Wonder if the 2018 sale being listed as non-standard means it was foreclosed on? Sad that they had to sell. Nice local community.
This episode was 2 years ago i hope someone kind stepped in to lend the couple $ after this episode aired seeing as what a great job they did on the renovation so they didn’t had to sell it so sad if that happened after all their blood sweat & tears 😳 God bless this lovely couple

At the end of day they did a phenomenal job! I hope they find a path forward to able to keep it. Now, like all the other shows on about restoration in the U.K. you guys seem to impregnate your spouses right in the middle of the project! (well not physically right in middle) but its seems to a be a theme. Restore a listed, and build a baby at the same time! I wish all the best of luck with their projects.

There's a lot about this that doesn't sit right at all. Too may aspects weren't thought true at all, you should be prepared for the possibility of going over budget and have a stable income, as well as have a project manager who actually manages and makes sure building doesn't start at winter without a fricking roof... And this might be a sensitive topic but WHY didn't she wait with the pregnancy??
As they say at the beginning, they saw people do the same thing on the TV so they thought they can do it too. Pretty foolish but hey, everyone has a right to do what they want, and if you can't learn things on other peoples experience you learn it on your own mistakes lol
I'm always amazed at the number of couples on this show that decide the perfect time to get pregnant is during an over budget renovation, no stable income, and a construction site for a home

Why didn’t they clean up the pews? That was just stupid.
My guess; time and money. Although cleaning, sanding, and varnishing the pews would have brought in more money, they just didn't have the resources. When my mother was building houses, she spent hours sanding and varnishing doors - and doors are a lot easier to get right than pews, I suspect.
A crying shame ... old pews are incredible. The timber on those would be over 100 years old with such an amazing patina. Fucking philistines to let them get drenched like that... what a shocking waste ... they rabbited on about loving the aesthetics of the Victorian era yet had no qualms about trashing the pews in the wet weather. Wtf ? No wonder George called them out on it ... (10 years ago mind you, so my invective is empty hot air, a decade away from any relevance ... sigh! )
At least cover them over to keep the rain off them, I wonder if they covered up the pulpit and the pews that they are using now. the first job on any build or restoration it have the building water tight, everything else can wait.
Seriously? She couldn't spend one weekend day with some Old English polish and some cloth & clean up those pews?
There was only one thing missing in this episode, they HAVE to be in by Christmas!
It is water damage, not a dust job. Requires a total redo in terms of the finish.

End result really nice .But start of project use An Experienced Tradesman as you're foreman .Could have worked managed and built that Spire for you .A lot of stress for You Both .But looks very nice .Thanks for showing this .

Amazing transformation! I hope they are able to live in their creation. I'm in the USA and two of my friends bought old churches. One was built in the 1890s, and was well maintained. It sold for a very low price,...not much more than a 2 family house, in our urban area, for about $60 thousand dollars, in 2001. The fellow who bought it sold off the stained glass windows, to make some money for minor restorations. It came with a full commercial styled kitchen in the basement, that served food to the church parishioners and their children. All stainless steel counters and sinks, etc. My other friend bought an old church in a rural area, probably built in the early 1800s. It too was intact, but it was filthy inside,...but the roof was sound, and there were no leaks. His big mistake was renting it out for the short term while he restored parts of it. His renters were scam artists,....though he had no idea at the time. He rented it to them for a low price and they claimed they would repaint and clean the interior as a part of their rent. They never did a single thing,....and only pretended to be doing that work. Then they got an idea of how to scam my friend,....by claiming the old building was making them ill. They claimed the old paint which was flaking off was giving them lead poisoning. They stopped paying any rent, and refused to leave. My friend took them to court, and they counter sued and wanted a full jury trial. They found this scummy scoundrel of a lawyer, who turned the court case into a dramatic event. My friend's legal fees, ate up all the money he had set aside for fixing the church, it took close to a year before he could get rid of his renters. Later he learned the folks were well known scoundrels, and scam artists, who were seasoned con-artists. The stress of the whole debacle, caused friction between him and his wife, and she divorced him and he had to sell the church.
Really sad to hear. I feel sorry for your friend

I don't understand why they left the roof just lying for so long, and didn't even cover up valuable things like the building materials, pews and the organ.
That organ could have made £400-£500 in good condition, but was probably just firewood after being exposed to water.
That's what i didn't get, they removed the roof 1st instead of clearing out the pews and organ 1st, if it been me. i would have had those cleaned and auctioned off before any building work started. Could have made a £1000 there

Cooling such a monster is quite easy: cooling is built in. Getting it warm is the real challenge

As an architect, seasoned with countless restorations, couldn’t George have passed on a tip or two to the inexperienced project manager? Here in the states, a show like this might have enough of a production budget to present the owners with a check for $50K as things started to go pear shaped. It was surprising the community didn’t rally around and raise the $. A sad ending but who knows?
The mark of maturity is to live in a home you can AFFORD, not just WANT.
What were they thinking? In the end, they had to sell it. They spent all that time, effort and sacrifice to eventually have another person enjoy living in it.

I did a job once and the crane couldnt get through and everyone was standing around waiting. So I started bolting the plate on the beams and they were looking at me like I was stupid. It has to be done so why start the frame when the crane is in place?
Couldn't they have removed the spire, and renovate it another time. St. Augustine's Church in Brookland, Kent, in Walland Marsh, built 1250, removed the spire and left it to stay on the ground besides the church.
right this is so smart they would have been 40 k under and would be able to afford the build and added it on later

Or better still remove the spire and continue the church roof along to the end, so no great expense of the spire

Looks like the property is being run successfully as a holiday let. Wonder if it's still owned by these people who restored it and if they still dream of making it their home?

Overall it's lovely.
I'm not religious nor that much of an architecture nerd, but there's something about altar --> kitchen that doesn't sit with me. The altar was the heart of that space, so you'd give it a more ceremonial function, like a reading room/living room with a fireplace or something and then put the kitchen off to one side.
And what's with the floral pattern on the sofas and curtains, doesn't match anything else.

At 38:00, they mention that the house is done. No, it is not. The roof looks really sad, the outside of the building needs revamping and the grounds aren't even touched.

Some people on this show should really have a Go Fund Me account...and in return get a brick with our name on it!!! Then I, living 1000km away can own a Piece of History being remade.... €100 for a brick....can add up quickly... whether part of house, a patio or add.on. Why do they wait until autumn before starting the restoration? Don't they should realize that bad weather will be present for several months.

@@annaburtenheim5310 I dunno. I watched several episodes of this show and it always seems like it's imperative to get the project started right away before it falls down. And some of these buildings have been standing for 600 years.
@@annettevillain4352 ... time = weather changes and possible heavy snow fall which may cause huge damage. Time isnt just minutes its changes. The time wasnt referred to as. You lose a dollar for each day. It's the more days go by the higher the risk is that the whole roof will collapse and you'll end up with a huge expensive pile of bricks and timber
For how much this guy lost on making poor decisions, George kept his cool and remained respectful. I would have been irate about the roof situation and how it/he continuously kept making things worse. Why would you tear a roof off without protection?!🙄

This was a disaster from the beginning. People please be realistic! These old places are almost always money pits! Unless you got alot of money do not ever buy these historic relics!! I feel so sorry for this family.

I absolutely hate the kitchens placement . I actually feel angry they wasted the opportunity to have the most beautiful sitting room surrounded by those glorious windows topped with that superb ceiling . Sitting in there would have been been simply divine . As it is , it is wasted .

@@lindacarruthers3423 LOL I thought exactly the same. Converting a church in to a home is notoriously difficult, but to place the kitchen in the most beautiful area is something I can't fathom. There is an episode of Restoration Home "Old Church" about Sir Thomas a Becket Church in Somerset, where the kitchen is also in that area, if I recall correctly, but they solved the whole conversion much better.

It's nice that buys and restores historic buildings, but it's need huge money to fix up that. I think it's just hobby for some rich people.
I'm really trying not to be negative, but this show makes it rally hard not to be negative. Why don't any of the people here save money before buying a place? Why would you think a hole in a roof wouldn't be such a big deal? And if the towns people are that passionate about a building, why don't they give some money to the project to get it fully restored? BTW how did she get pregnant while he was in another country?

The whole church couldn't be restorated more comfortable and worth living in than this place. I understand why the kitchen is created where the heart of the church is.
A little less church where one needs to rest in the living room.

Bit off more then they can chew when doing a project like this you should always be prepared for unknown cost that may awise
The sad conclusion was obvious and predictable from the start. It's unfortunate that there apparently is no financial product which would consolidate the total debt at a more reasonable interest rate allowing sale of their primary residence. I wish them the very best.
Nice job, but a big lack of wardrobes and drawers in the bedrooms, which would be my No 1 priority,

I'm always shocked at how much risk you in the UK take with fire. Where I live all bedrooms must have a window big enough to escape from, which I think is common sense. This church should not have an upper floor... I would not have bought it unless I was happy with the small floor space or I could build an extension.
it's funny you should say this because when I first moved to the UK (living in student accommodation in the mid-00s) I was surprised at how many fire safety rules and measures there were, compared to where I came from, where fire safety wasn't ever brought up. I even thought "they must still be traumatized by the Great Fire of London" lol. But I guess the very strict rules are reserved for communal/shared accommodation where the owner has liability for the safety of others, whereas they're more relaxed when it comes to private residences.
And then you have stories like the Grenfell Tower disaster which prove that, no matter how much knowledge there is in modern-day construction and planning, there will always be people willing to sacrifice the safety of others when financial interests are involved, which is sad about humanity as a whole.
Shot themselves in the foot not making the building weatherproof in the first place. Payed that price myself, but not on that massive a scale...
Once again the beauty of the building disappeared after all that work!!! Looks like a standard home((((
