Oil filter instructions from the manual; 2. Use a clean rag to wipe off the mounting surface. 3. Apply clean engine oil to the O-ring of a new oil filter. 4. Tighten the oil filter according to the instructions on the package or side of the oil filter. Tightening torque (reference value) 15-20 N·m {1.6-2.0 kgf·m, 12-14 ft·lbf} It’s a lot more than hand tight.
Synthetic oil is generally accepted to be changed out every 5,000 miles. I personally do mine every 4,000 miles. I chose 4K because old conventional is 3k so it’s in between conventional and synthetic.
I lost trust in ramps along time ago. My open differential civic launched one of the ramps under the body once. After that I was a Jack and stands kind of guy.
When setting the next service distance, is it the distance from where you are now, or every 3000 miles? I'm at 2800 miles and I want to be reminded at 5000 miles.
It allows you to choose the interval by every 250 miles if I remember correctly. You’d just have to do the math and set. I don’t remember if you can set by your mileage. I want to say you can.
I have a skyactiv X 2.0L - do these instructions apply? also the oil filter and oil filter tool, can I use the same? I cannot find anything in the manual...
Unfortunately I can’t say for certain since it’s technically a different engine. The oil filter tool, yes you can use. But the actual oil filter part number should also be on the current filter. You could also call your dealer to verify the part number and research from there
I own a 2012 Mazda 3 2.0 skyactiv and a 2020 Madza 3 2.5 skactiv. The oil filters are the same size but, the 2.5 engine requires 4.5 liters of oil and the 2.0 engine is around 4.2 -4.3 liters of oil.
Not sure about that Amazon Basics oil he used, but the only one I found that Mazda approved is Castrol 03124 Edge 0W-20 Advanced Full Synthetic Motor Oil. Whatever you use, make sure it is acceptable by Mazda, or they could claim you voided your warranty. Also, keep all your receipts and a log of the work you do.
I could see the correct viscosity being required but I’m not sure they could hold customers captive to a certain brand. That’d be a good legal battle regarding monopolizing or colluding. But I’m no lawyer either 😆
@@yoej8 Egh they can't. Generally you have the same SAE and ACEA rating, the oil is compatible additionally different manufacturers can certify oils like GM Dexos 2, or Porsche A40 which means that you're guaranteed 100% compatibility. OEM oil is an easy bet for average people not to screw it up. In my previous car I went to the dealer, bought a jug of OEM oil for my first change recommended for my car, then kept the jug because it had all the Specs on it. Replaced it later with Castrol or Liqui Moly. Engine was running strong and didn't eat oil at 220k km until I got side swiped and the car and I parted ways...
Per the manual at the time I made the video, it says your need 4.2 liters it’s been my experience that when our engines run low on oil, I feel the performance is more sluggish. Almost as if there are sensors to slow the car down to protect itself. All speculation on my part there. But I would just get another liter, pour what you need and save it. You want to periodically check in between oil changes to make sure your oil is topped off on the dip stick anyway. You’ll end up using it eventually.
Thanks, I appreciate that. As far as it being set to automatic, I’m pretty sure it’ll just star at the set interval according to the manual of 5k miles
I would think it would create some form of vacuum and hold the oil in some areas and or create an inconsistent flow. Kind of like when you pour water out of a water bottle. But that’s not necessarily true in an engine. I do usually take the dipstick out along with opening the oil cap.

Carbon edition or bust
Thank you. I have a 2021 after selling my 2012 3. This helped a lot since nothing much is available for the new model. Nicely done 🙂
My pleasure! Happy to hear It helped out
A 2.5L engine uses 4.5L or 4.8 quarters of 0W-20 oil when changing the filter.
It's no use using one of those suction things because you still have to go under and take out the oil filter so rather just drain it
Whats the mileage interval for every oil change?? I have a 2022 mazda 3, if that makes a difference?

Wouldn’t it just be easier to drive it on some ramp stands? That’s what I’ve been doing with mine.

Thanks for the video. I will be adding a fumoto valve to my 2019 mazda 3 when I change the oil. Had it in my 2018 subaru crosstrek and it was awesome.
My pleasure. Glad it helps. I’ve always wanted that fumoto valve but just never ended up buying. Definite helps save on crush washers.
@@yoej8 the valve was awesome. Made the oil change very trivial

@@yoej8 Amazon Basics is bottom of the barrel stuff. Keep your engine healthy with non-generic oil.
Thanks I’ll reconsider not getting the Amazon basics.
@@AX5Z That's false based on th-cam.com/video/a9DWGtXpYUc/w-d-xo.html
For the air filter tool, what size did you order from Amazon?
Check out the description. The oil filter remover is linked on Amazon
I have 2020 Mazda 3 (skyactiv-G 2.0).
If I replaced the oil filter, can I just add 4 liters of oil?
Because a bottle of oil is one liter.

Hey! Urgent question. I didn’t place that new metal ring on the bolt, is it absolutely necessary to put it on?
Hi. Most would say it’s necessary. It’s called a crush washer that helps keep the oil from leaking.
@@yoej8 thank you! I ended up putting it on while i plugged it with my finger. Won’t make that mistake again
Nice! Make sure to check the oil level again if you haven’t already.

Is bt115010-7600 the same part number for the oil filter you use?
I have it listed in the description of the video. It’s very different than that you listed
Great video, thank you for taking the time!
Thanks! Happy to hear it helped!
4.5 liters or 4.5 quarts
Hi please see the description. It has values for both measurements.
From the video.. the design and access is near perfect in regards to ergonomics...some cars you need to reach in and around..
Agreed. Mazda thought it out pretty well. I remember having to prepare to get some warm oil down my arm in some cars.
After my comment I went and did the oil. It was so quick!! My typical oil filter tool won't fit but luckily I had the socket type.
@@mickmouse92 Nice. I just did my wife’s 2016 cx5 yesterday and thought the same.
Lol the finance guy told me these are harder than something like my 2013 speed. This is actually easier imo. On the speed it's like kinda offset
Nice! It seems the engineer happens to be a car guy finally. Or just had common sense
I want to change the oil on my car but scared to do so because I don't want to void th waranty
You could always ask your dealership. I have heard of some places saying it would. It just depends on the location/region/country

Thanks mate.
thank you for the quality video.

Plez do a tire rotation vid.
Might do one just for the heck of it. I did just get an impact wrench :)
I don’t have that options in my mazda 3 2019 .... I want to reset and to adjust , but looks like it’s blocked
You might need an update from the dealership. I’m surprised since our 2016 cx5 has the options as well
Car needs to be in ON position, not ACC.
Just do the maintenance light…… you wasted our time with the rest of this crap
I’ll keep that in mind for next time.
@@yoej8 This was actually very informative and much needed, definitely not a waste of time thanks again!

You could’ve just skipped to the part where he resets the maintenance interval
