Toshishun is a name. There is a story with a character named Toshishun, so this is a similar type of song to their Lovecraft inspired ones where they use the story as the base of the song.

Their biggest influence is Black Sabbath musically, so it goes back even farther to the early 70's. I think he's sorry that he doesn't visit his mother more. Great song!

Based on his apparent age, it's probably too late now.

Its based on an old folktale. "Toshishun" was the main character.

Toshishun was a short story written by the same author who wrote “Human Chair” (which is what Ninegn Isu means - they’re named after the story). Based on a Chinese folk tale.
Toshishun was a wealthy man man who blew his money on fairweather friends and became a beggar. He met a wizard who said he would teach him magic, if he sat at a certain spot and said nothing until dawn.
At night, demons came to try and make Toshishun talk by beating him, but he said nothing. So they produced the spirits of his parents and began beating them instead. Still he said nothing.
Then he could hear the thoughts of his mother in his mind: “Do not worry for us. Do what you have to do - all that matters for us is that you are happy”.
At this Toshishun cried “Mother!” And the images ended, and he was back on the mountain.
The Wizard asked if he wanted another attempt, and Toshishun said no - if that’s what magic requires I don’t want it.
So he left to instead pursue a simple and happy life.

I didn’t read the story, I found a detailed plot summary on the net. Tried to post a link but couldn’t find it again.
The author’s name is Akutagawa Ryūnosuke.

22 albums out now--a really deep and satisfying rabbit hole to explore. It can be hard to pick out specific songs to get into.
The suggestions of Love Nirvana (a real banger) and Namahage are excellent. But as you start to get deeper you start to realize that damn...that's a lot of great songs. This is one that I most recently stumbled across:

    Black Sabbath
The Ningen Isu singer is too frail to be compared to Danzig. 😜
