I appreciate this, I know they have a HUGE catalog to navigate but I appreciate seeing reaction videos to their songs other than just Heartless Scat. I love their songs with translations, they always go deep.

The term "Toshisun" (杜子春; Do Zichun) in Japan usually refers to a short fairy tale entitled "Toshishun" by the literary giant Ryunosuke Akutagawa in 1920. It is well known in Japan and is often included in school textbooks. The original work is a supernatural novel recorded in Chinese literature during the Tang Dynasty, specifically in the 9th century.
It is said that more than half of the original work has been altered in the Japanese version of Toshishun. One particularly significant change is the ending. While the original story advocates the elimination of attachment in accordance with Taoism, Akutagawa's Toshishun, while retaining some of the Taoist worldview with the appearance of a Sennnin(仙人; Taoist sage), ultimately emphasizes compassion, aligning with the principles of Mahayana Buddhism.
To summarize the story of Toshishun:
Toshishun is the name of the son of a wealthy man who is in the habit of wasting money. An old man appears and gives Toshishun gold, but he squanders it and becomes a beggar. After repeating this cycle, Toshishun realizes that people adore him when he's rich, but turn cold when he's poor, causing him to lose faith in humanity. He realizes that the old man is a Sennin and begs him to teach him senjyutu (仙術; Taoist techniques).
The old man takes Toshishun to a mountain and puts him on trial: no matter what happens, he must not utter a single word. Toshishun endures torture and even a descent into hell without speaking. But when he sees his deceased parents being brutally beaten and recognizes his mother's love for him, he can't help but say, "Mother".
At this point, Toshishun is brought back to reality and realizes that his experiences were illusions. In the original Chinese version, the Sennin coldly rejects Toshishun for his inability to let go of his attachments. In Ryunosuke Akutagawa's version of Toshishun, however, the Sennin appreciates Toshishun's utterance. Toshishun expresses his desire to live a human life, and the story ends with him beginning to live in a place provided by the Sennin.
Anyway, the song "Toshishun" by Ningen Isu presupposes Ryunosuke Akutagawa's Toshishun and Buddhism. According to Wajima-san, who is responsible for the guitar and lyrics, what is important for human beings is not becoming a sennin or pursuing ideals, but the kind of love that makes you say "Mother" from the bottom of your heart. That is why the end of the song is bright. The beginning of the song, which has a clear and floating feeling, is meant to evoke an image of heaven.
Finally, regarding the point that humans, unlike animals, find it difficult to live. I don't think this has anything to do with teachings that resonate with Taoism, such as returning to nature and becoming one. This is a story often found in Buddhist parables, where people suffer because they are attached to desires. Animals also have attachments, but because of their lack of mind, they manage not to become overly attached to things.
Taoism and Buddhism both view attachment negatively, but their approaches are quite different. In Taoism, attachment is completely denied in order to become one with nature. On the other hand, Buddhism believes that it is necessary to observe and understand attachment in order to escape the chain of suffering. Therefore, instead of denying it outright, Buddhism first acknowledges and understands attachment, and then finally lets it go in a step-by-step process.

The end part was like a hint of salvation. It sounded a note of hope at the time of the pandemic.

'I have to go my own way', 'I have to catch my own way'...so the meaning of 'march ending' of the song is obvious. Toshishun, the main character, caught his own way and began to go forward. Wajima expresses that without words, so the song is full of lament but ends with hope.

It’s good to see this Old-Man-Band again - with their amazing skills. Why I mention their age? I like to see them as wise scholars. 🧐They seem to tell us: Pull yourself together, life is always hard, death too. Follow your own path without moaning (and for God’s sake: stop your bad habits 😤). That was my first impression while listening to the song and I found it true and hilarious and disillusioning at the same time. And for people who feel lost in a troubled world full of lies and misfortune, they have an advice as elder people always have: Follow your inner voice. Oh, I just read in their biography, that they actually are younger than me. Time for me to get wise, too! (Still in progress 😴). In the meantime I’m enjoying your reactions and your deep dive into songs and artists. 😀

This is a song from the new album "Kuraku" so yeah, you can say that it's about Covid. Ningen isu write songs to contribute or reflect the world and time we are living in, there are songs about country girls' grief cause they have to leaving their hometown, song about the 311 tsunami, and sometime use old tale and prophecy to reflect the reality today. They have quite a lot of knowledge in Literature and using them to show how they concern or see the world, and I love them for that.
