Lovely video because it highlights the importance of green vegetables.... what people often don't realise is that seeds are high in omega 6 and omega 9 which causes inflammation. Seeds are a convenience to ensure your budgie doesn't go hungry if you have a busy lifestyle. 1 tsp/ Budgie/ day. Green leaves are critical for flying creatures ( including insects) because the water in the cells is structured... exclusion zone water.. it's more hydrating than simple water and the bird has less weight to carry. A budgie will only eat about the volume of its beak for each kind of food. With green vegetables try and provide two kinds of grass ( this is their main food by volume), a root vegetables green ( such as carrot tops, beet greens, parsley), a mustard family leaf or flower, a cruciferous vegetable ( rocket, cabbage) a lettuce family ( lettuce, dandelion), clover, amaranth leaves... Variety is crucial to avoid intoxication. Only rain forest parrots such as rosellas and cockatoos require a little fruit. Don't convince your budgie to eat fruit.. it's like convincing a child to drink soda. Birds that don't scratch the soil ( like chickens do) should not eat root vegetables such as carrot root or cooked potato because they are too high in starch and glucose). When cleaning your cage, grow the fallen seeds in soil and harvest the greens when they are sufficiently tall enough to cut with scissors. If you place food on the floor of the cage, it has to be in an area totally clean from droppings to avoid bacterial infections. Feed boiled egg once or twice a week as a bug substitute. They will only eat the amount of a pea in volume. Never let your budgie eat something contaminated with human saliva. They have a weaker and different immune from humans system. Never leave bath dishes in the cage for more than 15 minutes to avoid the budgie drinking poop contaminated water.

I deal with too many sick pets fed inappropriate diets with pet owners that don't even realise their own health issues but all well intentioned and momentarily suffering. My budgies are young and have many "first time" experiences, at first they didnt want to eat anything but seed, but now that i have learned these tricks, they are more excited to get their veggies and fruits (:

I learnt one from a channel ..to introduce new food, remove the seeds at night before the birds go to sleep and give the new food at Early morning as they eat most of their food at morning and remove after 6 hours and repeat for 10 days

I need to tell my mom to give our two budgies more veggies and fruit. She's normally the one who feeds our birds, since I'm very clumsy with knives. I don't want them to leave us too soon, since I already grew attached to them so much.
THE MISTAKES I MADE IS - *I DIDN'T CUT THE FRUIT THIN, DIDNT CAMOUFLAGE THE FRUIT*
The mistake with Budgies is offering them fruit... they are dryland birds and their main diet is grasses by volume. Grow your seeds and produce the right kind of greens.
@@annburge291 You do get that not everyone can grow seeds right? Also, there is something called "evolution' which also means "adaptation". The budgies adapted to other diets as well. If they didn't, they would most likely die cause they didn't get fed well.
@@ivagrujic248 My son had a pet Budgie that lived 22 years in Mexico.. most pet budgies have problems reaching three years old because of their inappropriate diets and physical and environmental dangers. I only comment so your Budgie can live a long and healthy life and so you will spend less on vet consultations. You decide what is appropriate. Sometimes diets have to be modified because of food availablity and economic constraints.

I always try to feed my budgie some apple or sometimes strawberry but she doesn’t eat them :”) she only likes lettuce and cucumber, she also likes carrot but loves lettuce the most xD ive been trying to give her more to try but its getting hard haha, thanks again for these tips hopefully i can trick her with it so she can eat more vegetables and fruits :”D

I have eight budgies and six of them came from the same pet store. Three of them are my niece's. The people who worked there really fed them the right way not just seeds and I am glad I don't have that problem. It was because of those six that my two oldest ones finally started eating fruits and veggies. It really does work when you have a flock and that they learn from each other. They are quite a bunch of fun buns. 😂
I somehow got my older budgies to eat their chop 😂. I tried so hard and then one day they just ate it! And they LOVE their chop. Also I really recommend the flock way. I got a new cockatiel a few weeks ago and she now eats the chop ok. Also my male cockatiel taught one of my budgies who didn’t like toys to chew and play!

My bird wouldn't eat veggies at all until I ground up some broccoli and put it on a compact mirror that lies flat. I put the mirror on the bottom of the cage with the broccoli and birdie came down to check herself out. She started eating the broccoli and now the mirror is what I use to feed her her veggies with. Birdie didn't like apples much, but really loves her broccoli and raw curly kale. Cauliflower was met with a lukewarm response and carrots were a no go. I may try giving her a thin slice of carrot and see how she likes that. The ideas you presented here were really good and I will try using some of them to give my bird a wider variety of veggies and fruit.

No it's not... same as bribing a kid to eat chocolate cake, soda, chips... they just don't need it. Once addicted they have all the health challenges imaginable. The Australian drylands produce fruit for about a week once a year and many animals and insects eat them leaving little for our feathered friends.

@@ivagrujic248 I'm Australian. I had wild budgies and galahs in my backyard. I then moved to Melbourne and lived on the edge of rainforest where I had cockatoos and rosellas as residents. I observed what they ate, when seeds and fruit were available... Budgies main diet consists of grasses ( about 50 kinds) and other plants that grow amongst grasses. They do eat seeds, but as a small part of the diet. Most Budgie owners totally ignore the need for grasses in their budgies diet.

@@jaydebpal7839 if you grow the bird seeds, most are in the grass family. So are oats, wheat, rye, corn (only very young plants are edible by budgies). Then you have rhizome grasses such as couch grass, Johnson grass, bull grass. You have standard lawn grasses ( make sure no chemicals added). Then there are the clump forming grasses such as switch, maiden, fountain. The new growth is near the roots with grass plants and it is sweeter and more filled with carbohydrates. The older leaf stems have more protein. The really old leaves have more fats/ oils. Ideally budgies need to be offered the whole leaf and they eat what they need. The grass seeds are high in starches ( carbohydrates) some protein and some fat ( mainly omega 6 and 9). The problem with a high seed diet is that plants also produce lectins to protect their seeds. These lectin proteins attack insects nervous systems...in large doses lectins also affect budgies and humans nervous systems and causes inflammation. The green part of grass leaves is much lower in lectins that's why I recommend giving ample amount of the sprouted and grown grasses and measure the seeds (1 tsp seeds/ Budgie/ day).

*I wet a bunch of fresh organic kale and put in it their cage and once one parakeet started to eat it, they all began to eat it. They love carrots, apples, romaine lettuce, kale, spinach, and strawberries. I will continue to introduce more as time passes. They also love pellets. I got them to eat it by mixing it with their seeds, which I try to limit.*

This is a fantastic video!! SO many people feed only seeds, especially to their small birds. We need to get the word out that seeds only are NOT good at all!! I’ve got 14 rescued parrots (4 are budgies) & my recently rescued Quaker ONLY ate sunflower seeds for 17yrs! She’s so weak that she can’t fly, & her feathers are almost oily as a result of the seeds...
Anyway? I just can’t tell you how much I LOVE seeing such happy healthy birds🥰❤️🦜Thank you!!
I also have a cockatiel that I rescued one year ago, he was kept in a cage small even for budgie. He was fed only with millet and sunflower seeds. Ringo also lived in the cafe bar and because of stress he started plucking feathers. When I adopted him, he was totally naked. Now he's fine and he started eating greens and vegetables. You saw him in the video probably 😀
I did everything wrong with mine (she flew away. She didn't die because of malnourished) I'm gonna do the right thing the next time. I want to pet another budgie again haha

Everytime I eat an apple I cut a slice off for our 2 budgies and hand feed it to them as I eat my part. It's a special moment when you can tell then understand what you're trying to tell them and they proceed to devour the whole thing in seconds. Lol
I got mine to eat a bit of fruit, which was shown , I was eating an apple they wanted some too , :) but now they like spinach /carrot /romaine lettuce , they love a bit of cooked sweet potatoes too with seed sprouts , grated carrots , they prefer veg to fruit but I cant complain there happy
