Can we all just agree that an artillery equipped VTOL is how you tell the opposition "You're not allowed to have nice things." :D I would also like to add my favorite Clan VTOL, the Skadi. With an 11/17 move, an Ultra AC10, a few ER Micro Lasers, and Ferro Fibrous Armor, this beast will sort out a few issues. And it's a beauty to behold. Too bad it's a JF design. ;) Though that Periphery rocket-armed Karnov is absolutely my jam. What a beast. Finally, yes, Pimp My Ride for Battletech vehicles is an absolute must. Maybe one Clan and one Inner Sphere and one Periphery, just to see what you can do with different tech levels and costs. Perhaps a scenario where you pit Clan vehicles vs Inner Sphere or Periphery Mechs, or amass Inner Sphere/Periphery vehicles vs a few Clan Mechs. Just a thought. All the best guys. Love what you do.
My most common opponent really likes vtols and spiders, swarming my heavy lances. VTOLs can be very nice but they are fragile and can get blown up with a bit of bad luck. I like to use artilery spotter vtols with TAG, I particularly like the Oculus Recon Rotorcraft, a 25/38 vtol, only 5 tons and only armed with a TAG. Fly in tag things and the artillery game becomes a lot easier. And semi-guided LRMs of course. only 74 BV. But when it gets hit it goes down.

I do like the idea of bringing VTOLs as my support units, as they give air support, without the complexities of Aerospace rules.

Requirments :speed and long range weaponry
Tactics: Get behind the enemy
Tarron can't count, IS BA is 1 ton each and go around in 4s therefore a IS BA platoon is only four tons.
