Alan Collard, how would you have done it? Show us the mistakes they made. Also I doubt that there is a chance a valve would contact a piston, TDC or not, on these engines the valves are at very few mm lift at TDC. The valves are at max lift AFTER TDC. Non interference engine.

Did you seriously leave the crank all dirty? I know its going to be tucked away but I would think a smooth clean surface would keep oil from sticking to the weights and such.
Checking the quench does not indicate a fool. Most fools don't even know what quench is, or the free power it provides when perfectly matched across all cylinders.
definitely not race engine builders,no clearance checks,cc ing the head well very inaccurate,and putting the head on at tdc when you have shaved the block and head, very chancy,lets hope it was a stock cam with no lift
+Alan Collard well these engines have lots of clearance stock, if the timing belt goes the pistons and valves will be out fine, only thing you need to do is to adjust it so it gets correct and get a new belt on, at least on the b23 engines in the 240 i had was like that.
