From obsessing over weight to stressing over our looks, the PLL diet culture had a bizarre approach to food.

@@BratzRockAngels in the books it is viewed as wrong, he goes to jail and when he comes back aria realizes he's weird af. also ezra is barely in the books anyway. aria's main love interest in the books is noel kahn who is a really nice and sweet guy. so the person that made the show clearly loved ezra x aria for some reason so they turned noel kahn into a horrible person in the show AND killed him off just so they could make ezra her main love interest. it's just very strange.. but whatever the amazing book series is the real pretty little liars, i don't take this show seriously
@@asdzxcx3686 I didn't know this show was originally books. And I'm not surprised the books are better and the show completely misses the point of them. I'm glad the original knew it was wrong, but once again, they have people who want to sexualize teens creating these young adult/teen shows and completely mess it up.

I really detest the obsession with weight and being "Fat" in teen shows. Hanna in the flashbacks was portrayed as being "hefty", when she looks exactly the same as the present day scenes. Even baggy clothes can't disguise Ashley Benson's beauty. It's just a toxic message to send to impressionable viewers.

I think one of the worst episodes for me was the one where Noel got his head chopped off and Spencer got shot, that was the first time it really dawned on me that they are just throwing in random stuff to shock us and not even trying to write good storylines

Lol I remember when Hannas mum was sleeping with the police officer in first couple seasons and she was cooking him breakfast and Hanna was getting all angry like "we don't eat breakfast in this house!"
She addresses it in the video, Hanna’s mum cooked to seduce men and Hanna wants attention from her mother. Her mum doesn’t cook for her, but for the men around her causing Hanna to be frustrated.
It’s crazy how much more thought we’ve put into this show than the creators ever have
also I feel like we all at one point said stuff like “Aria and … would be really good together” when they had the slightest bit of chemistry or one scene together so we didn’t have to endure more Ezria and so she could have a healthy relationship with someone who didn’t groom her, she had loads of potential love interests but they never really committed to any besides the worst one, such a shame they didn’t go with the books on that one and send him to jail
My problem is that even the girls made not subtle jabs at Hanna’s eating issues. In the season 4 finale; Hanna was making noise while she was trying to get some cookies , the girls scolded her even though they probably hadn’t ate anything all night. Also in season 4, Spencer ripped a mozzarella stick out of Hanna’s hand while she was trying to eat.
yes!! there's a scene in season one where they're studying for the SAT's (the episode where they're stuck in the library because of a storm) and hanna is still eating their takeout and they're like "ew, why are you still eating that??", the showrunners were so irresponsible with the way they portrayed food consumption in regards to, not only women, but teen girls.

I don’t know who but someone made a really great video on the food on Gilmore girls. They use to eat more in the early seasons but you’re right food acting is hard and directors rather not do the multiple takes.

was waiting for you to mention when hanna asks emily for her string cheese (and actually eats it!!) in season 4? i think? and says something like "i just get extra hungry when i'm nervous. i think there's another scene in season four where ezra and aria are feeding each other brownies (and are actually eating them). there was a running joke in the fandom for awhile where all the couples worked out together, while ezria always stayed in and ate lol. then around the time Spencer wasn't doing well in season three, there was a scene where they put a lot of focus on her heating up a frozen meal in her microwave?? one of my favorites is in season 3 episode 6 where the liars are all out eating and they plan to split fries but then by the end of the scene spencer is just like "i do want my own cheese fries" in the most assertive voice. 👏it's just gold. as much as this show had some questionable moments regarding food, there are some moments where the characters seemed to be not so problematic with it (as much as possible in a fictional tv series at least) 🤷♀
It was kinda hilarious how they jumped through so many hoops to make aria and Ezra work like they STRETCHED for whatever they had !!!! Also, love the tiara, always a queen ! Love your videos

Two scenes that always stuck with me were from season 1. The first is of the liars all sharing 1 slice of cake and the other one is of Aria awkwardly asking for to eat one of the carrots her mom was cutting.
What saddens me even more than food being thrown out on TV is the sheer amount of actual food being thrown out in real life, every single day.

i think film/tv has a problem with showing women eating in general. usually it’s only shown if there’s a reason he’s being shown, like if it’s a plot relevant meal, but even when women are shown at the table to eat they are almost never shown actually eating it. very weird sexist thing that exists for sure!
Thats true, but i also think they dont show characters eating unless its a) relevant to the plot (for example the character has an ed) or b) an important conversation took place at breakfast/lunch/dinner . These shows were not meant to follow characters 24/7, they only show plot relevant stuff. You could say these shows dont show characters eating, but they also dont really show them peeing/pooping/showering/brushing their teeth/doing skincare etc cus that would be irrelevant and boring and people would complain how there are so many fillers in the episode. I think we are just meant to assume they do all those stuff. I didnt articulate my opinion the best but i hope you got my point
It's not sexist. TV and movies don't actually show characters eating for a very practical reason, which is continuity. If you're filming a scene where a character is shown with food, and the next scene is of them eating said food if they mess up, they really can't replace the food they just ate, they need to bring another plate to redo the eating scene to avoid breaking continuity, so it is unpractical if this is done in all the scenes involving food. That's why in most movies and shows you only see characters implying that they're eating but not actually eating, you see them moving the food in their plate, or just saying they're full and putting their plate down, or sometimes even just taking a bite and that's it.
Besides, the studios where shows and movies are filmed have tons of lights, creating a very warm environment in which most of the time, real food won't last for a long period of time, and sometimes scenes take very long to film. By the time they're done filming the scene the food would be spoiled and unsafe for consumption. To avoid the wastage and food poisoning, they don't use real food, they bring props, which is why actors can't really eat then and just simulate to do so.
There's an episode in Friends where Joey is eating pizza, in a behind the scenes bit, they mention that the scene had to be filmed multiple times, and the actor had to eat so many slices his stomach ended up hurting.

So I can think of one reason, and this is hopping into my psychology degree chair for a moment: food is seen as a way to care and nurture people in your life, when you offer it to them, it shows that you are thinking of them and their needs. It's important to feel cared for, basic human need. So when the girls reject food from their parents, they're not just rejecting food, they are rejecting their care, their attempts to nurture them and make them feel love. I think one of the biggest reasons for this, is that the Liars cannot trust their parents, or they have been let down by them so many times (Aria's dad cheating and her mom leaving them, Emily's dad is gone all the time and her mom needs to work on not being so homophobic, Spencer's parents, well I could write an entire paper on how they fucked up their kids, but specifically, they always choose Melissa over her, not matter what and lastly, Hannah had an eating disorder which warps how the mind views food to begin with, normally with being the enemy and therefore any offer from a parent, is not seen as an act of kindness or nurturing, but an act of violence against them, also her dad abandoned her) so the girls have zero adults they can rely on or even trust, so in an odd way, it kind of makes sense that they are constantly refusing food from anyone, they can't trust them.
Once and a while, I can get my husband to watch the show with me, because watching anything from my teen/YA years is really entertaining, anyways, we've talked a lot about the things that happen later in the series and whenever I bring up Ezra, he's like, "Oh you mean the guy that knowing dated a 15 years old and had previously also dated her friend who was even younger? Him, that guy?????" Because I watched this really great video essay a while back about how the show and the characters really down play they age gap and *cough cough* illegal and grossness of the relationship and always focus on the fact that he is her teacher!
Not to defend the Ezra/Aria pairing (because I also thought it was weird and gross) but they probably down played the age gap and focused on him being her teacher because in the state of Pennsylvania, where the show is set, that is the main thing that makes it illegal. The age of consent in PA is 16. Honestly though, Aria deserved better anyways. Ezra was not the sweet, sensitive, bookworm they tried to portray him as.
there were so many negative scenes involving food, particularly in the first season. hanna eating the cupcakes, alison telling hanna to not eat the cookies, melissa mocking spencer for eating pasta, etc. not epic
Mona had so much potential but the writer's really screwed up love her she definitely should had been the fifth liar
I didn't notice it so much the first time I watched the series, but now that I've been through ED treatment, I can see the toxic diet culture stuff throughout. Especially in the first season or two with Hannah and her mom, they never eat unless it's salad or coffee.
Personally I think the show portrays a way some people actually are. To me Veronica and Melissa being judgemental about Spencer making a pasta and them taking a salad because they ''do not want to be fat'' to me portrays the obsession with being perfect and the pressure Spencer gets everytime she is not that. I think showing those kinds of things can be very important to a story.
theres a few episodes where subtle comments are made towards spencers ed. i think it was going to be a bigger storyline but they dropped it. like one time i specifically remember toby saying she wasnt allowed more coffee until she ate all her breakfast and she kept talking and not eating until he made her and i remember her telling her mum she wasn’t hungry but not in a normal way, it felt like they were hinting at something i remember
i had never considered that part of why Alison became suburban-housewife-ified was that she had to end up dating Emily. that makes it even more annoying honestly, maybe they could’ve tried making Emily more edgy (for lack of a better term) instead of making Ali more boring.

I have to say that for me the absence of food in some situations is more telling than when it is shown, I think it shows exactly how stressed A was making the liars, and sometimes when you're stressed you stop taking care of yourself, I.e you stop eating
Aria and Holden should've been endgame and I will die on that hill. Childhood friends to lovers is one of my favourite tropes and I still feel so slighted by the writers that they brought Holden back for an episode or two after the flash forward and then gave him and Aria these really cute (and honestly refreshing) scenes and then he never came back. I will never get over this.
I also loved the Spencer of the rails and Ezra being creepy storyline. It was seriously great 😍 the old days of PLL before it spun out of control ❤️ I prefer it being "realistic". Not secret evil millionaire twin with underground bunkers and year 2050 technology 😂
i significantly loveee original sin sm more, i find tht is has a much clearer timeline than the og. it talks abt problems tht r serious in a tasteful way. the girls reaction to things r much more realistic, it jus feels so much more refreshing for it to be inclusive and relatable. the twist r ones tht make sense but r still unpredictable, not to mention how A is such a scary character and the stakes r sm higher. we the watchers know A is there but it’s not constantly thrown in our faces like we’re stupid, i jus love the reboot sm! love your channel btw! hopefully you will do videos on original sin!

I feel like sooooo much is lacking. “A” is so bad, like he/she doesn’t seem to know any of the girls secrets or using their secrets against them. He also kills random people that we or the girls don’t care about like is that supposed to raise the stakes. There are also soo many cheap jump scares - the one at the end of episode 3 was the most atrocious. The episodes really just drag like they were designed to waste your time.

you should do a pll video about the outfits like who had the best dresses for the dances, which season did each character have the best outfits in, which outfit was one of your favourites and one of your least favourites. I think you should dive deep into the fashion and what there fashion said about their character that would be so GOOOD. The fashion is a huge part. one of my favourite dresses is the one emily wore to the winter ball. It was so flawless.
As a teenager I remember going through phases with food because it was the one place I could control.

One thing I personally think is that when everyone figured out aria and Ezera were together they just focused on her being his student instead of her being a minor.

I actually started rewatching the original pull now that the new series came out. I’m not really feeling the new series, but I absolutely love the cast. Nothing beats the original but rewatching I’m also grossed out by all the adult men who date the girls while they’re underage. I can barely watch Ezra and I remember thinking he was so great when I was a teen lol. Now that I’m grown I am just grossed out by the whole relationship.

Honestly a good depiction of food and habits is supernatural weirdly enough. Like those men talk about food every other line, sure Sam is super annoying about healthy food but you have dean happily munching at anything and always offering castiel food even if the man literally doesn't need to eat cuz he's an angel, he offers cuz food is enjoyable regardless of the need for it. I appreciate that.

What most settled me were the diet products in the fridges. „Low fat milk“ was always the only milk.
So glad you're talking about this!! Honestly I recently started realizing that SO many of the shows and movies from our childhoods literally never showed food, or did so in very toxic ways. This is a reason I love movies now like Oceans 8 where there's many scenes of them eating to portray nothing other than realistic humans being humans
yeah, i get that they need fake food on set sometimes, or can't always show the actors eating, but its definitely harmful when you never see anyone eating
Most food in filmmaking is prop food and even when it's real you can rarely eat it for real when filming, for continuity and because you'd have to do so for many takes and be sick.
I haven't seen OS yet, I wanted to binge it, and since it seems to be so good, I hope this isn't a single serving.

I wish I could have seen a better friendship between Spencer and Mona. At one point they were my favorite characters until things became the Spencer Show. I haven't seen the show in a while but I still like Mona out of all the characters and I wish she was the main character honestly. The other girls just ended up being too annoying to my by the end of the show.
Given the stress level they were experiencing, loss of appetite is normal. We saw alot of caffeine consumption, now that I think of it. But you raise great points !

i think the original sin reboot is actually good!! the slang that they tried to add in is really corny and dumb, but the characters are actually very strong and i think it’s a nice take on the show and it’s what i expected from pretty little liars! ily and i think that friendships that should’ve been more incorporated is spencer and mona and spencer and emily. emily and mona were robbed of actual relationshos

I feel like all the girls in the reboot are very likable while having flaws! Like Tabitha and all her constant pop culture references is just poor dialog writing to me. I watch a shit ton of movies and shows and still end up asking at least once an episode what the hell is she referencing. But otherwise she’s a good friend to everyone and unlike the original show I think it’s comforting/makes more sense how the different characters really work as a group. I honestly don’t understand why any of the original Liars were friends with Allison besides Hanna and maybe Emily. They only thing they had in common was their school if we’re being honest. The show depended on the backstory and someone else on TH-cam said it and I think it’s true they were more like coworkers.

I'm a bit late commenting on this video, but I needed to say that I started rewatching the show and it's just so weird to me how they, whenever there's a girl or a woman they don't like, they (especially Alison and Hanna) keep saying that she has a "big butt" like it's an insult or something. Like, it's really funny and nonsensical to me because today, having a big butt tends to be considered to be attractive and trying to shame someone having one would be considered offensive. It's crazy how 2000s and early 2010s teen shows were obsessed with being skinny! It goes to show how much beauty standards have changed!

My gosh there was way too many twists and complications I just can’t find the strength! @@armingleiner5292 the population in US is onese bc most people can't afford good food, live in food deserts, don't have the time or can't afford to take care of themselves and their families and don't have the opportunity to do sports. And the nonexistent healthcare doesn't help in any way, shape or form. This has been researched to death.
Because of this type of thinking demonisong food and fatness we have such a gigantic problem with eating diaroders and the age when they start to appear keeps dropping, currently it is around 9 years old.
So, no. We don't need more of people having bad relationship with food, that actually makes it worse. Teenagers already are badly affected by this, it does matter what they see as normalised. Because we know that we are affected by what we see and it can lead to unpleasant issues.
If you wish to solve obesity in the US, instead of insisting the issue is obese people, let's instead solve the reasons for it. Because the biggest reason between US and the rest of the world is exactly the difference in food accessibility, quality of food, access to health care and fair wages No, I am not saying that it is a resolved issue outside of the US of course but the difference is dramatic and it has been researched to death. We know why this happens and we know how to resolve it. And the resolution is never "show more people having bad relationship with food while normalizing it".

i remember being so triggered by this show😄 and i couldn't always put my finger on it as to why... it's more done in actions, rather than things they say. Besides Hanna's "fat days" - then there wasn't really so much said about food. except for " i'm not hungry. i just lost my appetite" ...
mostly it was the way they would go about the whole subject. Hanna and her mom in the kitchen. those scenes were the worst.
it's funny... There are shows like Gilmore girls, where food is such a big part of the show, but its done in such an unrealistic way. they didn't actually eat that way, and was that thin. teach waste and bad habits and always eating so so so much ( even if we never actually saw them eat it) AND then there is PLL where they avoid food. even when they talk about it, its about how they do NOT want food.
It's always a bad sign when food has a big role in shows - when it wasn't actually the purpose. if the show was about ED or one of the characters battling it, then it would be great. but these subliminal messages are the things that hurt the most i think. because teenagers ( and with these shows - highly likely mostly GIRLS) - teenagers learn habits through what they SEE ... not what people say.. i know for me, i picked up some bad habits due to some of my favorite tv characters..... I don't have a solution, i just know that there is a problem for sure. ❤️

Tbh as a writer if I saw that everyone was obsessed with a certain character/ship that would make me more likely to consider making one evil/kill one off bc it would be way more powerful that way.

I always thought the show didn't show many people actually eating because then the actors have to eat everytime they do another take.
I have watched interviews with actors from other shows where they say they actively avoid eating on camera unless the script/plot/director specifically ask for it because they dont want to be eating in 20 takes and be overly full.
And on the other hand you have Gilmore Girls with coffee and takeout in every scene which always made me crave it while watching 😅

Not excusing things but the reason why people don't eat a lot on tv is because eating scenes are annoying to film especially for continuity
