Considering Emily’s family’s financial situation and family’s values vs the other girls’. I think her outfits looking relatively cheaper makes way sense for her character.
thank you! Emily's family was definitely no where near as rich as the other girls' families (the show usually made a point show her working part-time jobs and her family having money problems) so I think her laid-back, more basic outfits definitely suited her character

The costume designer/ stylist really didn't know how to dress Sasha once she gained weight. It is really sad because they made her look so frumpy half of the time. It came off as they didn't care to put in the effort to make her look good.
100% agree she is so naturally stunning I feel they really didn’t do a good job and it was disappointing. I also felt they could’ve done cuter looks for Emily, I don’t think the sporty look was their strong suit
yeah i totally agree. they neglected any of her past fashion choices when she was the queen bee. i feel as if she would've reverted back a bit to before she disappeared because shes struggling to find her footing with the girls after all the years she was gone. she deserved more effort from the fashion team
Ali in later seasons felt more like a mom than the leaders of the Mean Girls and it was definitely because they didn’t know how to dress her. & that really speaks volumes on society & how they view you when you gain weight. Smh

yes! alison was so into fashion and she was always shown to be stylish and yet they had her wearing these long tablecloth dresses and frumpy sweaters. alison would never wear that!
They did Sasha so dirty in the later seasons. Alison went from iconic mean girl to sad house wife with all the cardigans and I’ll fitting pieces
Seriously, they really messed up there. The most ridiculous part is that she still looked drop dead gorgeous and she's such a great actress, she could've portrayed that confident b*tch girl we all love in her sleep.
I think a lot of her later season wardrobe issues were because of her weight gain, which was due to the actress having PCOS. They did not seem to know how to make her look great because of that.

I always loved Aria's style. I think it got really repetitive at a certain point, like she would wear leopard on leopard and kiss prints mixed with other prints over and over. It was wild and I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing about 80% of it, but I still found it inspiring and amazing

We were looking hard for clues in the wardrobe choices 😅 I forgot the connection but it was something with the leopard, Aria and A I think #tumblrera 😂
Emily's Ravenswood costume reminds me of what we first see Rose wear in Titanic. The blazer and long pencil skirt with stripes just made me think of that :)
I love Spencer's style so much, it is feminine but at the same time mature and sophisticated. Also, with Aria's clothing choices it is like a hit or miss for me. Sometimes I adored her clothes and sometimes I didin't like it all. I always try a mix between Spencer and Aria because in my opinion their different styles compliment each other - what Spencer sometimes lacks, Aria has and vice versa.
Spencer actually ranked the top for me because I can see myself wearing her clothes. Emily always ranked the bottom because it seems like the costume designers just couldn’t be bothered with her

There’s a interview with Mandi Line, the costume designer for season 1-time jump, where she says she wishes she could go all out with 80’s butch influences with Emily’s style after her mom starts accepting her! (Prior to that the style is intentionally subdued to please her mother). And I always wondered who was stopping her and why? Anyway, that was probably partly why Emily ended up looking so bland compared to what the designer wanted. Someone was likely saying no.

Emily outfits I either love or was disappointed. Alison in general character and fashion was done not well as the show went on. Spencer outfits I feel is a classic dresser and it resemble in her clothes. And I agree with OP. Hers were the most realistic so if you were to do a prom look. Spencer’s are easiest to do.

Spencer does simple, classy elegance so well. It’s never really a show stopper, but rather a timeless style that will never go out of fashion
I do agree with you for your top pick. I feel like Aria was the one given the most creativity in her outfits throughout the show and like she had maybe more freedom to try things. She knew what fitted her best and played with it while staying feminine, sexy and overall her outfits looked fun to wear.

My favorite was Hanna during her and Calebs trauma arc the black and blonde hair and leather jackets and more edgy clothes just look so so so attractive on her in my opinion, I was disappointed when she got “fixed” later
Omg that was my favourite too!! The girly look on her doesnt do it for me her edgy look suited her so much and loads of girls have the black and blonde hair now Hanna was truly ahead of her time

Not me laughing so hard at the critiques. When you said you were being critical I already knew and I'm here for it lol. My favorite styles was always Alison, Aria, and Hanna but I felt like when Alison came back they were dressing her good until season six everything became unflattering and baggy.
Gosh I remember how I used to envy girls' outfits. I spent my teen years in a small town in Russia so we didn't have anything even close to what girls wore. So I just watched the show and thought that one day I'll grow up and will dress the same. And guess what? Now I'm just cringing 😂 But still I try to dress in Spencer's style. She's an icon of a smart casual style to these days. Watching this video just gives me goose bumps, I just remember little me and how great this show felt to me then. weirdly i had it in my head that spencer fit this preppy, classic, old money aesthetic, but looking back on all of her outfits there’s hardly any that fit this bill? they all seem more scattered than i remember, maybe i was making a generalisation based on her personality. i don’t think any of them reached the level of ‘icon’ that, say, gossip girl managed to, but maybe it’s just a sign of the time and the trend cycle hasn’t come back round to that era yet.
I remember liking Aria’s style the most overall, probably bc I would never have the confidence to wear half the stuff she wore 😂 Hanna was a close second though…
aria's style is so bad at some point tho, lmao..... it's not creative, just... tacky? and it was at a point where lucy hale started to look a bit different as well and to me her outfits always made her look sickly, like the colors weren't too great, the patterns were very try-hard middle schooler and the shapes weren't very flattering, and it was just not... good -- to me. the first 2 seasons were top tier for all of them tbh.
For me her best style times were S1-2 and S6B and 7 and S4/5 was her worst
Her outfits were most definitely tacky but her formal outfits and the ones after the time jump were good
I was so surprised you hated Emily’s Halloween train outfit! I think if you don’t get the reference it’s a little underwhelming, but she’s dressed as Barbarella, hence why Paige quotes the movie line “tell me about love on your planet” which is so iconic! I thought she stole the show 🪐

I searched so long for this one layered green top Aria wore in season 1x4 and I couldn’t ever find it. Loved this video
Personally I'm a huge fan of Film Noir, so seeing Pretty Little Liars nail the genre made me happy!
This used to be my favorite show! I think it failed later on partly because there was so much focus on entire episodes surrounding some kind of fashion event instead of the mystery. Like, whole episodes of big dances, film Noir, costume parties, etc. The show became a fashion showcase (a good one, lol) for fashion while the scriptwriter was busy figuring out the convoluted storyline.
I loved Hanna's outfits. I remember always looking forward to seeing her outfits the most. I also had a huge crush on Ashley Benson (still do ofc). In fact i think I had huge crushes on all of the girls especially Hanna and Spencer lol.
Like Aria's first seasons fashion - fun daring outfits with interesting patterns and combination that I would not dare to wear or even think myself but so cool on her actually. And Hanna's later seasons style especially last season - very slick clean cut cool girlboss style. + Loved her rebellious punk period when she wore lots of black.(have that period in life myself as many girls did, still do like it but more grown up version)
I am CONVINCED that the reason they made aria look childish is just to further the teacher-student fantasy through the male gaze. First of all, I think they did this by making the smallest of the girls, Lucy, aria when she auditioned for Hannah. Having a smaller woman dressing childish opposite of Ezra would play up this “fantasy”
I have to say Aria looks childish most of the time for a reason, and her clashing patterns always seemed to reflect her confusion as if she were trying to find herself.
Honestly, I always loved Spencer's fashion and would actually try to dress like her!
Emily felt more like a real teenager for sure!
It always seemed as if Hannah was trying too hard, but I loved that her style reflected her moods.
Alison's stylings bothered me the most because they were either too boring for her large personality, or in some cases, super predictable. That being said, I don't think they knew how to dress her properly.
I feel the stylist really didn’t do the best job with Emily’s style. It could’ve been so much cuter, I liked her occasion outfits but her every day style was so boring and really forgettable . Emily is so beautiful they could’ve really made her stand out more if her fashion matched her beauty and was interesting. Sporty style doesn’t have to be boring
i agree, its like they didn't know what to do when it came to tomboy/sporty wear which annoyed me because you could make that so unique and pretty
This was so fun and interesting. I usually always love Aria's outfits cause its mostly what I would wear. And I actually really liked her dress in Ravenwood, but I do agree the screaming pink is too much. It would have been better if it was purple and just darker. And I absolutely adore her black and red dress actually hahah

I mostly agree with your picks. You can see who was favoured - and it was not Emily. I do think she got the short end of the stick. And Alison after she came back... As if plus sized women couldn't look good. I would've loved to see her more like she's been in the black and white episode. She has such a wonderful figure, she can definitely show what she has.
With Spencer: Hum, I think everything that has this tiny straps and doesn't cling to her chest makes her look..flat. If I have to say it. It's like her nice figure vanished and suddenly she has no chest anymore.
Emily may be the most realistic. But it made her stand out like she was no real part of the group even more! I always felt bad for her as she had, like, a couple of basics thrown at her, but nothing really interesting.
All in all I liked Aria the most. She was so beautiful in the later seasons as an adult. I loved almost every outfit she wore and her hair was amazing! (The only one I didn't like was her wedding dress. 😂😂 I was so confused because to me it looked like some dress you'd wear for a nice summer day out. Not for your own wedding?) But yeah, Aria wins. 😀

For me personally the later seasons have overdone it. She dropped to being somewhere in the middle. They tried too hard to give her that dark developement. And I absolutely did not like what she was wearing in the last episode! It's just my opinion, nothing else. I know others might like that dress. For me it was a tad too much. 😅
My personal favorite fashion is the flashback of Alison ,because she so innocent but with a sharp edge . But Hannah in Ravenswood to be one of my favorite outfits.

Okay I loved this video!! I know you said you were done with the PLL series. . . butttt i have one video request. I think it would be interesting if you did a deep dive on the girls’ friendships between each other throughout each season. When I rewatched this show, it really intrigued me to see what friendship was the strongest and which was the weakest between the 4 girls, and I feel that it definitely shifted throughout the different seasons. For example, it seemed like Aria and Hanna had the strongest relationship in seasons 1&2, however, they became one of the weakest friendships in the later seasons of the show IMO. But I would love to hear your opinion on this and you do deep dives extremely well, soooo you don’t have to, but I would be hella interested!!

When I watch PLL I always tend to hyper focus on Emily’s choices when it came to the dressy up moments. I felt they often put her in something that made her broad shoulders look even more broad and it just didn’t compliment well. Maybe that’s what they were going for, who knows. Personally the style like the blue halter neck dress in season 1 really really suited well with her shape💜

Emily's Halloween train look was based on Barbarella. If you know the reference then she NAILED the look, but unfortunately if you don't know what she's dressed up as it's questionable. I wish they could have gotten a better costume for her that was still a part of LGBTQ+ culture but was more well known. Her look was actually my fav for the Halloween train then Hanna, Aria, the Spencer
