I get such a kick out of your down to earth commentary as you move along with the project. No other turner I’ve watched thus far teaches technique. That piece is extraordinary.
My father built me a gun cabinet out of cypress when I was 15. We started with 8 planks 18 inches wide by 6 inches thick by 12 foot long. Had them plained to 3/4 inch thick, I had no idea I was helping to build my own 15th birthday present.
Very beautiful wood turned into a fantastic bowl. The pitch may have been of some concern but maybe only to a 'dodo' like me but certainly not to someone with your skills & abilities. The grain is quite simply stunning & the finish used suits the piece so well. Why would you confine it to a log cabin, unless it is a beautiful log cabin home. It would definitely be placed in a prominent position in my home. Congratulations to you sir & thank you for sharing it. Stay safe & well in these troubled times.
Phil I get up every morning and for a minimum 3-4 hours I sit in my kitchen and watch videos of wood turning. I watch yours most of all because I want it to feel like a class and you are the teacher. Most other videos are just you watching and no one is explaining what they are doing and why. You learn important things by listening and you make listening enjoyable.
Hi Phil, that grain looks dramatic. It reminds me to yew, i turned a handful of napkin rings from a tree i felled and was exiteted of the liveliness of that grain. Thumbs up and thanks to Tuffy, who seems to be a really faithful supporter .
Another beautiful bowl, Phil! I’m glad you decided to make it bigger-I couldn’t see it at the time, but it did make it look a lot nicer. That grain pattern is something else! Thank you (and Tuffy) for sharing it.
Phil does a great job and always a FUN show to watch. Phil's show keeps me hiking & looking for unusual wood. ..Marcia consider sending something for Phil to turn ???....tm
Hi Phil, what a lovely colour and grain! Beautiful piece. I was a bit afraid it's coming apart at that bark inclusion. The colour makes me remind a bit like apple.
Hi Phil, You make it so difficult for me to think of something new to say every week as each week you turn something beautiful. You guessed it you've done it again this week. Great work Phil. Cheers, Huw
Fantastic job. Dont live in a log home but do live in a home with lots of logs......wish you could see it Phil, and you'd know the bowl would fit right in.
Beautiful bowl! I love how you work with the natural shape of the wood each time, rather than trying to make it uniform, makes for very interesting pieces.
Another great piece, love the way you take 'chunks' and transform them to bring out their natural best. Less 'transformed' than perhaps revealed. Just one thing that lies beyond my comprehension: You are reminded that "Not everyone watches all of my videos"! Well done, Phil
When your sanding discs get gummed up try using a small stainless steel brush to clean it That's what I do! Also I really enjoy watching your videos, they give me some good pointers on my lathe work, thank you, Randy Lucas.
Phil , those soup/bean tin cans come in real handy for. A lot of other projects don’t they? Well, friend, I would not have given bets on this baby staying intact all the way to the end but you sure was gentle & got what you wanted.- one beautiful Nature grown bowl. Great job and thanks for keeping us on the edge of the seat again.LOL
Fabulous piece Phil. Love the contrast of the caramel coloured heart wood with the pale. Graining is pretty and I love the shape and the bark giving such a strong definition to the lip of the bowl. Another knockout!
Wonderful turning Phil on a gorgeous piece of wood. I hadn't paid much attention to Cypress before but you've given me a whole new take on it. Don't worry about the noise of your heater. I have mine on from October until March.
Never a dull video from you Sir, this piece was superb, love natural edge and the grain pattern was beautiful, Have to see if I can find some Cypress..
Looking good Phil lovely job I managed to get my hands on some spalted beech and I cant wait to turn a bit of it keep up the good work you are a inspiration to us novices
Hi Phil.. Love the grain in this wood, 👌. A genius at work.. and that you are ! Thanks for another informative video.. and looked and found your flower making video .. again thanks for an interesting talk. 🖐️👏
Hi Phil.. I have got my lathe up and running again.. and turned a vase and some tulip's to go in.. be nice to show you ? but that I wouldn't know how to send a photo over to you. 👋👍 All the best.. Laurie
Just as I have become to expect a wonderful bowl, I am glad you went out past the outer edge to make the bowl larger. I like the shape, Great look, finish matches the wood, good choice.
That’s a beautiful piece Phil, the colours & inclusions, the finish. So much to look at, you certainly performed some magic with this one. Regards, Geof 🇬🇧
Oh my!!! Simply gorgeous Phil... the grain is absolutely stunning with all those swirls, glad you made the choice as to which side is top. Another great turning adventure... I love it! Thanks for the beauty
Phil, unfortunately timber clad houses in Australia in those days were all painted (multiple layers of oil based paint). The wood was plentiful when those houses were constructed. Nowadays they use cement fibre board or vinyl cladding.
Wow, you sure do tackle some really rough looking chunks of wood, but always find that pearl deep inside. I’m much more conservative with my starting pieces, attempt to get them kind of round before mounting. Nice looking bowl there in the end.
Phil that's a beautiful piece well done
Glad you like it, Rich, thank you! 😊

Hi Phil, what a lovely colour and grain! Beautiful piece. I was a bit afraid it's coming apart at that bark inclusion. The colour makes me remind a bit like apple.

Nice job Phil, love the grain formation. My first house in Australia was clad with ¾" Cypress wood, lovelly wood. Thanks for sharing Phil
Thank you, John! Did it give off an aroma? This still does after about three weeks.
Phil
Phil, unfortunately timber clad houses in Australia in those days were all painted (multiple layers of oil based paint). The wood was plentiful when those houses were constructed. Nowadays they use cement fibre board or vinyl cladding.
