Really nice, Phil. Yew did a great job on it. Besides the natural features, there's some areas of nice grain. Listen to Gary and Gord - STAY HOME! And stay safe and healthy.
The beauty of this piece is in the craftsmanship. You can see the attention to every detail in turning, sanding and finishing. A piece made by a Master!
Hi Phil. I don't know that you should feel too 'down' about this bowl. I think that it can 'hold its head up High' amongst your other pieces, it has a strong grain, a good shape & an excellent finish, I like it. So, it's another PA masterclass with this piece of Yew. Chin up my friend, Don from South Aust.
We have a lot of yew trees in church yards here in the UK used for long bows amongst other reasons a poisonous tree nothing grows under it, a lovely bowl Phil top job 👍
Howdy Phil I think it turned out beautiful . similar to Douglas fir but a little darker . Those two white spots on the side remind me of eyes the one blinking . The nice size , keep it for popcorn . That spot on the rim is it a little rustic look I think. Remember keep six feet away from reading this . LOL take care keep on turnin'
Hi Phil, I know this is not your normal style of video, but for us mere mortals we now have a chance to be able to turn a Phil Anderson bowl at last. I really like Yew and have turned lots of pens from it but not a bowl. I think it's time to go online and get a bowl blank. This is a great looking piece Phil. Take care and best wishes from another person staying home but on the other side of the pond. Cheers, Huw
Thank you, Huw! You put this virus into perspective with your comment. It's not just me, it's not just my town, it's the whole, wide world. Stay safe, buddy. Phil
Pretty bowl. All those cracks and knots add character. Judging from the growth rings, that must have been an old tree . . . pretty wood. All those rings remind me of some "heart" pine I have that was salvaged from a very old structure; very tight rings.
Yew typically grows in the understory, and it is a VERY slow growing tree. It is a conifer, or softwood. It is actually one of the hardest "softwoods" on the planet. I turn a lot of Pacific Yew, which is what Phil is turning. It is an awesome wood. Makes great long bows too! Best in the world!
Lovely traditional style bowl Phil, certainly not easy to find Yew blanks as large as that over here in the U.K. It’s one of my favourite woods for turning when I can find it. Stay safe my friend. Geof
Hi phil hope your well and staying safe buddy lovely video nice bowl your work is the best love to watch keep them coming stay save mate all the best kirk 👍
Glad you wear a mask for this one. Yew is banned from my local woodturning club as the dust can cause a drop in blood pressure; a few of the older chaps have passed out due to it. Looks bloody beautiful mind!
I have to disagree with you it is very outstanding I think it’s very beautiful and I’m so happy I got to see you make something amazing as this huge bowl you do great work I love watching you thank you so much God bless
This bowl may not be as spectacular as some of your other creations Phil but it has a simple elegance. The knot and the cracks and the nature give it plenty of interest and those two pale sections on the outside kinda look like feathers to me, you know? I like it a lot!
You may have thought it to be a bit boring of a piece Phil, but i just really like that grain, and yew should too,see what i did there, have a great turning day!!!
Hi Phil another great tutorial video i have learned so much from your informative way that you convey your turning including the mask and shield on before you start so important to us newish turners safety first and enjoyment throughout huge thanks please keep safe through these terrible times your old apprentice Jim
I guess this video proves that you really do read all your comments ;-)! I really like this bowl Phil! I know it's pretty plain compared to what you normally do but thanks for making it. Stuart
Thank You Phil....Yew wood has always symbolized to young/little "Tuffy" archery wood. But it does not grow nearby so I just satisfied my youthful imagination watching " The Adventures Of Robin Hood " ...but one of these days, oh yea. Phil, Maid Marian would love to have made Robin some English Crumpets in your Yew bowl (my fantasy life is HUGE, ha)....Nice bowl Phil and always FUN!!!...TM
Ah, Maid Marian. Every man's fantasy I think, Tuffy. Hmmm, now ya got me wanting to watch Robin Hood. Several versions available. I'm thinking the one from the 30's, Douglas Fairbanks, maybe. Or the Kevin Costner version. Hmmmm, gotta go see what I can find... You, well, you better get back to that fantasy life! Phil
Love your work! My father-in-law made me numerous wooden bowls before he had a stroke and passed and I just love them and will treasure them always..I just happened to come across your channel a few days ago and have thoroughly enjoyed it..
Yew done a lovely job as usual keep it up look forward to your videos love the way you tell us the chisels sizes and the speed you are turning at gives me clues to what speed to try and turn at thanks phil
Lovely smooth-honey bowl, Phil. Yeah, nothing exciting, but just enough going on to be restfully satisfying to look at. Kia ora from New Zealand 👋; in these times, I love using this Māori greeting, as it literally translates as "be well" or "good health to you". We are in lockdown here, so I am grateful to all those who are posting videos of themselves creating lovely things. Keep it up 😊
Oh, you are wrong about nothing outstanding. I love it. Wonderful grain and the branch spot gives it person5. So yes is like a box of chocolates... you never know what you are going to get. 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you, Jerry! It took me a long while to learn how to use it. Then, one day, it just clicked. That's the best way I can describe it. Hang in there, stay safe, Jerry! Phil
Nicely done Phil and it must have been nice not turning 50% air. I always thought Yew was a harder wood but that reminded me of Cedar. But maybe those razor sharp gouges made it seem that way. As what Gord says STAY HOME! We have those orders from our kids who will shop for us if we need anything. Sheesh they seem to think we are old or something..lol But I just might need some glue for a segment job I having bouncing around in my head. So I suppose I might need some Tylenol or something..lol Another great video my friend, Take care, Gary
No, no, no, Gary! They'll bring the glue with the groceries! Stay home, buddy! I know, it's driving me crazy, too! Thank God for a shop with a lathe in it. I can't imagine what this would be like without that diversion. Thanks, buddy, stay safe! Phil
Oh I am not going anywhere. When our youngest son said he would pick up grocery's if we needed I joked he may need to get me some glue. I am in good shape for shellac though. I bought a gallon before all this started. The county I live in is the worst in Oregon.. What was hard was telling them we could not help at the food closet. For sure it is a blessing to a shop to keep busy in. I would go nuts building puzzles. By the way next week will be from some home grown Siberian Elm. Be safe, Gary
You have some nice yew there. Even with knots and cracks the bowl looks nice with all the nice grain patterns. I never trust old air dryer wood as yew showed you it can still move (and start running cracks). But for using a normal blank, for us normal turners, you did a nice job. Don’t worry, I’m sure someone will send you some “Phil” normal wood to turn. Stay safe. Cheers, Tom
HI phill that's turned out just beautiful. I just been in my workshop and with this virus I managed to spend more time there. lol. its a bug once u get the bug u can't walk away. cool. keep turning.
I really didn’t expect much from that piece of Yew but it’s very nice. Not in the league of many of your turnings, Phil, but considering what you had to work with it’s nice. I am rarely in the right place when you release a video so it was nice to see this in nearly real time!! Be safe, my friend. Stay home!! 😷😷😷 Happy turning, .....Gord
Thank you, Gord! Staying home, staying home... They just extended our stay home order until May 4th! I'm going stir crazy. My kids are going to do my grocery shopping for me. Man, I hate to depend on other people, even family. Oh well... Phil
Phil, were you a teacher (I mean in a more formal setting)? You have such an easy way of talking to us when you are going through your though process, it reminds me of a couple of terrific teachers I've had in my life. Your bowl looks a lot like some cedar that I turned not too long ago, which also very pleasantly surprised me! Thanks again! Cheers, Rick
Not a teacher, Rick. I guess I just feel like we're all in the shop talking turning, that's all. Thank you for taking your time to watch and comment! 😊
Phil, as a beginner in wood turning, I very much appreciate your dialogue as you go along. It surely is helpful to me. Keep up the great work. Thanks !!
Howdy, Phil! You're gonna make a bowl out of that? Well, I just knew yew wood! 😏 Very nicely, too. Be sure to thank Phil for sending this old chunk to you so you could turn it into a lovely bowl for all to enjoy! Postage must have been outrageous ... Oh, wait! 😉 I particularly like the twin spots that remind me of something seen in closeup satellite photos of Jupiter! Nicely turned, indeed!
Hey Phil I tuned in for my weekly adventures in the Shady Acres Woodshop and this is a beautiful bowl... it didn't give you much trouble to turn and you brought out it's beauty perfectly... thank yew so much for sending yourself a lovely piece of wood for us all to enjoy, until next time take care and stay safe...
Amazing piece of practical art, Phil. Been watching your bowl turning videos for a few weeks now and the inspiration is addictive. I struggle with tool marks inside a winged bowl, keep hitting the edge as I come out of air to wood. Stay safe and all the best from South Africa.
Thank you very much, David! As you exit the piece, reduce your pressure and follow-through into the air. You can always go back and do just a little more. Light pressure and patience are your friends. Phil
Yew made a bowl that makes a change. I like it. Thank you for sharing and see you soon.
Thank you, I'm glad you like it!
Phil
Really nice, Phil. Yew did a great job on it. Besides the natural features, there's some areas of nice grain. Listen to Gary and Gord - STAY HOME! And stay safe and healthy.
Thank you, Bill! Staying home, staying home. But, I don't have to like it! LOL!
My bowl? No Phil, yew bowl! Great work as usual😊
Yes! Thank you! 😊
Looks like the full moon with those eyes and lovely grain.
😊
You say nothing outstanding but I say outstanding!
Thank you, Sheilah, I'm glad you like it!
The beauty of this piece is in the craftsmanship. You can see the attention to every detail in turning, sanding and finishing. A piece made by a Master!
Glad you like it, Sabrina, thank you! 😊
Hi Phil,
You might think it is plain-looking, but I think it is beautiful and yew-nique!
Take care and stay safe!
Best regards
Lars
Ah, you are the first with the Yew-nique comment, Lars! I love it, thank you!

Yew can be pretty great or pretty plain. Just luck of the draw. Thanks, Bobby! 😀
We have a lot of yew trees in church yards here in the UK used for long bows amongst other reasons a poisonous tree nothing grows under it, a lovely bowl Phil top job 👍
I've noticed that UK Yew is ALWAYS beautiful, Jeff. Ours is sometimes very plain, other times just as beautiful as yours! 😃
Howdy Phil
I think it turned out beautiful . similar to Douglas fir but a little darker .
Those two white spots on the side remind me of eyes the one blinking .
The nice size , keep it for popcorn . That spot on the rim is it a little rustic look I think.
Remember keep six feet away from reading this . LOL
take care
keep on turnin'
I can't even see the screen from six feet away, Bruce! LOL! Hey, keep that sneeze to yourself! HA!

Simple but beautiful. I think it’s pretty wood. It’s got a nice color.

Hi Phil I think the grain and the waves in it is awesome. It is a wonderful bowl.
Thank you so much, Kobie!

Looks like YEW made a great looking bowl Phil. Nice job my friend.
LOL! Thank you!
Phil
Pretty bowl. All those cracks and knots add character. Judging from the growth rings, that must have been an old tree . . . pretty wood. All those rings remind me of some "heart" pine I have that was salvaged from a very old structure; very tight rings.
I think you are right, Robert, a very old tree. The wood is quite heavy, very dense. Thank you my friend!
Phil

Thank you very much, Paige!
Wow phil a standard bowl, well turned phil top job mate 👍
It won't happen often, Peter, but it happened this time. Thank you!

It is a work of art. The color and pattern of this yew bowl is awesome and beautiful and the pattern of side of bowl looks like an eye.👍👍

Looks bloody beautiful mind!
I wear a mask for every turning, David. Wish I would have started years ago but better late than never.
Thank you, I'm glad you like it!

Nice bowl Phil, good functional salad/fruit bowl, nice job. stay safe. John
Yew wood, leaves, roots, seeds are poisonous. One is looking for any early death due to the urushiol oil that is in the plant.
@@suzettekath9860 Good info, although Phil mentioned he was using a food safe finish.
@@SiamWoodShop That is good to hear of. I just don't want anyone to die from consuming things that were 'contaminated' by poisonous containers.
