Hi from 🇨🇦 Phil . I have watch so many of your videos and there are many that I thought at the beginning were going to be a waste of your time. Well when I seen the beginning of this video I was 100% sure it was going to be a very nice piece of fire wood. Well I was SO WRONG. You sir have turned the impossible. You have a talent that so few have. It’s an honour to watch you at work. This piece is my favourite of ALL wood turnings I have ever watched on TH-cam. And I have spent many hours watching many talented turners, but this has just put you in a category of your own👍.
Gosh, Mr. B, such a great comment! I truly appreciate you taking your time to watch my videos and comment on them. It means a lot to me. Thank you! Phil
Phil Anderson - Shady Acres Woodshop Well it’s the truth Phil. I have a ? For you. At what speed do you do your sanding ? Wondering if there is a ideal speed? Meaning what RPM is to fast or to slow.
@@watcherdude1330 Typically, 350 rpm. If the piece, like this one, has voids where I'm sanding a lot of air, I will go faster, maybe up to 450. That lessens the chance the disk sander will fall into the void. You do normally want to sand at a little lower rpm to allow the sandpaper to do it's job. Hope that helps!
Sir, Not only are your woodworking skills immaculate but so are your tutorials. You pass on your knowledge with clear and precise sentences, and with a wry sense of humour. Well done!!! Bob.
The 2" candle to me warmed up the most wood of "The Piece". Your vision of how the piece evolves is artistry. Anyone can turn a rectangular cube into a bowl. Creating an asymmetrical, beautiful form from an irregular piece of wood...now that's art
Looks unbelievable! Thank you for taking the time to explain each tool you use or finishing products. Those things really help us newbies learn and it is appreciated. 👍🏼👍🏼
Phil, so amazing and creative! Thank you for sharing your gift with us and honoring the wood’s uniqueness! Each piece is so special and you took it to new height! I loved the votive candle!
The 2” inch Candle suits this work of art and looks like a natural melted candle . Really appreciate the approach to go the path untrodden to see a result that’s out standing piece of art !! Great piece only inspires me more more to wood turning
As I’ve said before, I love maple. This wood has such a pretty color and the grain is fantastic. I think I like the flickering candles best but I can’t decide between the two and three inch candles. I like the candles best because they don’t compete with the wood, they enhance it. The maple is the star of the show! Another lovely job, Phil. Great way to start the year!
Wow Phil. The longer I look at this piece, the more I see in it. Budda ? The longer I look at it, the more I love it. True art work! Thanks for sharing Phil 🍻
This is so unusual and beautiful! If you look at it as a whole, it looks like a bear setting down. We noticed many faces around the forrester cut, and on the right, inside the forrester cut you can see a naked lady with her arms up aroud her head, and a sheet across her lower body. An absolutely beautiful piece of art!!! Enjoyed watching you work this, and thank you for sharing the finished product!! Love it!!
I remember when, back in September, you and I were standing in front of Ye Olde Wall o' Woode in my garage contemplating the weird lumps and chunks I've collected and I pulled that one out and thrust it into your not exactly excited grasp. The method you came up with for mounting is simply superb! I think you have topped my Peek-a-Boo vase made from the same tree! Very very nice, no matter which insert you use. Well turned, indeed! Thank you so much for sharing your tips, tricks, experiments and successes. This helps so much. 😁 Dave, Calmwood Creations
That was a great gift Dave and to think I was almost there that day Phil made something special out of it. Was studying the Norway Maple today. Also the Plum Crotch. Pretty soon... Hope all is going well. Gary
HA! You saw that reluctant look on my face, huh Dave? I set the piece front and center. It may be visible in some of my other videos when I have the camera pointing at the workbench. I picked it up many times, turned it around, turned it over, and put it back. I could see the potential just in the beautiful wood but had a hard time figuring out out to hold it. Finally worked out. I'm so glad you like it, buddy! Phil
I was very curious as to your approach for this piece. I was delighted to see that you were successful in using the 2 sided tape and could achieve the column that you did. Being able to save so many of the bumps on the inside was wonderful. Great job!
You went with it EXACTLY the way I would have tackled it! And even though you used the word “vase”, I figured it for a candle holder. And yes, the metallic votive is the best choice of the options presented. The stripes blend beautifully with the wood on Camera, without compromising the wonderful burl details. Very well done on this one! If you decide later to part with it, keep me at the top of the list of people who would love to own it!!❤️❤️❤️
@@valeriehenschel1590 Howdy, Valerie! Dave, here at Calmwood Creations. I'm the guy who just about tossed this chunk into the fireplace, but then figured maybe just perhaps Phil could figure out a way to mount it. So I challenged him to do what I couldn't. This video kicked me into outer space! Beauty revealed is its own reward.
D. Ash Never, ever throw good burl in the fire!!! With a nick name of Burl Girl, I work any piece I can get my hands on. As soon as I saw the wood, I said “candle holder”! Of course, he could have done a bowl, but it really wanted to be upright.
The 2 and 3 inch candles show Micky Mouse above the candles. Another beauty! I must say you have more guts than most of us to attempt to turn this. We are thankful for your talent.
Fabulous turning and so brave. The combination of having no center on the head stock end and only double sided tape to hold such an off center piece was akin to magic. The finish was out of this world and looked more like alabaster than wood. On so many fronts, this piece, well deserves to be at the top of your hall of fame. Loved the 3" candle and also the metal votive holder. I so need a lathe with a tail stock and variable speed.
Man, I don't think anyone was expecting this piece. I was scared it would fly off lol. I think the metal piece accents the wood best, and it almost seems to make the birl pop even more. I try limiting my daily TH-cam videos, but I am noticing a bit of a binge on your videos. Your work makes me want to try the more complicated pieces I have stacked outside my shop. Keep the great pieces coming, and again thank you for your time!
Thank you, Matthew! I'm happy to know you will try some of the different pieces of wood. Once you get a couple under your belt it's really hard to go back to just a round blank. Phil
Again you are amazing Phil... Love your humour and discussion of your working ... Producing wonders with very difficult woodturning... Your the best creator I've seen... Small candle shows up good without hiding the grain. 👍
Just gorgeous, I love how simple you keep pieces and let the wood shine through - for that reason, I like the shortest candle because it shows the most wood
Wow!! Phil, I just watched this one last night. That's a very beautiful piece. You have such a wonderful gift of vision ... to see what's hidden in an apparently hopeless mess. Thank you for reminding us to not give up easily on any bit of wood.
Another stunner to start a new year. It looks almost porcelain! I like the two shorter candles personally. Thanks for showing. Jules, Droitwich, England
Hi Phil, I can surely understand why you like this piece, it is simply gorgeous! My favorites are the 3” and 2” candles, those look really good. Thanks for sharing and take care! Best regards Lars
I don't know how you came up with the idea on how to hold that piece in the lathe but it was ABSOLUTELY brilliant!!!!!!! I am at a lost of words for the beauty of this piece, all that comes to my mind right now is ABSOLUTELY GEORGEOUS!!!!!!! I like the shorter candles, the tall ones hide too much beauty of the wood. That is certainly the most creative mounting of a piece of wood to a lathe that I have seen, I applaud your creativity.
