    The performance is so close, it really is almost negligible. 99.9999% of people are not going to notice any difference in gaming between the i7 1400K and the 7800xd. Additionally, it remains to be seen which one will be more stable over time for various other pursuits outside of gaming like video and photo work. So far, I am getting better performance for non gaming tasks on the i7, but it's very close. I actually had to build two new PCs for my household and I built one AMD with the 78003xd and one with the Intel 14007k and I can say that there is very little difference in performance. Artificial benchmarks are cool, but real life performance is really good for both CPUs. I have also found much more headroom in my testing on the i7 in terms of over clocking so far. Definitely, if power is an issue, go with the 7800XD, otherwise, it's pretty much a wash.

      Awesome point Sanctus17! Thank you for pointing this out. Yes i agree with the long term part of this. It would be a good experiment to see how of your 2 machines work after 1 or 2 years. What kind of tasks for you do?

      Good morning. I do a lot of photo editing and video editing with the heavier load being on editing photos in Lightroom and Photoshop. I have definitely seen a slightly faster processing time using the 14700K when doing photo and video work, but the 7800XD is really close. With gaming, I can't really tell much of a difference unless I turn on the frame count monitor. When I do, and I leave the frame rate uncapped, I see a higher frame rate in most of my games on the 7800XD. I don't see as much of a difference as I have been reading about which is interesting. When I play Starfield on both PCs, the i7 outperforms the 7800XD, but again, the difference is slight and I would probably not notice with the stats off. The one thing that I find interesting is that my thermals are slightly better on the Intel CPU although I am using the same AIO. I have noticed a core temp variance of about 5 degrees Celsius which is admittedly minor, but flies in the face of the greater power efficiency of the 7800XD. I really think both are good solutions and will make any builder happy once they complete their rig. I would be happy with either one.@@RealMelTan

    What I want to see is some benchmarks and temperature tests on the i7 14700 non K variant. There’s basically nothing on TH-cam about it and to me it seems like the better purchase having a 65 watt TDP, minimal difference performance wise, cheaper price and despite being locked down when it comes to overclocking, barely anyone overclocks these days anyway.

    • @Zivin
      @Zivin 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The non-k version just means that it is locked, that means it can't be overclocked. The k versions are unlocked but aren't overclocked yet, you still have to manually overclock it. All of that is firmware not hardware. So if its fresh out of the package both are the exact same cpu. If you don't plan on overclocking then get the non-k version.

    • @AB_883
      @AB_883 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Zivinthey’re actually not exactly the same. 5.4ghz vs 5.6ghz max turbo boost. 1.5ghz vs 2.5ghz efficient core base. 65w-219w vs 125w-253w. Apparently the K version has approximately 10% more performance but also runs hotter and draws more power. Haven’t seen many benchmarks unfortunately but the way it’s looking, the non K version is the better purchase due to its efficiency . Read that that it’s also binned better too.

      Look at Jayz2Cents video on undervolting. You should be able to set an undervolt, lose zero performance, but significantly reduce the heat generated. A big problem is alot more power is being delivered to the chips than is actually needed. His video was done with 11th Gen but I'm sure the same still applies. Basically brought the temps of the CPU cores in cinebench from the high 80's to 60's under full load.

      Now here are some basics and my experience of undervolting. -0.03V for 14700k causing 10% performance loss. Limiting turbo boosts from 253/135 watts to 110/110 and core turbo ratios to 42 from 55-56 gives you the same 10% performance loss but temperatures not over 63-68 degrees. I have both builds and they are both good, but I would give an edge to Intel for stability, performance and compatibility with video and photo apps. For example, even in low level stuff like lightroom work, I have crashed a couple times on the 3xd, but so far never on the 14 gen i7. Of course there are a lot of factors like RAM, other software, cooler, MB, etc, but I lean more towards my Intel build for video and photo work. That being said, you would be fine if you used a 3XD, I just find the Intel CPU to be slightly more stable so far.

  • @GonzoTehGreat
    @GonzoTehGreat หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm wondering if recent Intel CPU releases are mostly to avoid losing market share to AMD.
    Before Ryzen, Intel had effectively monopolized the CPU market, so didn't see AMD as a threat, as they had a small market share which wasn't growing. Consequently, while there appeared to be consumer choice, most buyers actually opted for Intel.
    However, since Ryzen released, AMD is becoming a more popular gaming or budget choice, while Intel are suffering from problems, but if they admit this, by not releasing a new CPU each year, then they risk losing sales to AMD, so they rebrand and release as much as possible, forcing AMD to do likewise and it becomes a vicious circle, with each of them releasing new CPUs for marketing reasons.

      4070 Super uses a lot of power on its own and with the 14700k uses 300-ish watts on intensive loads I would just pay the extra $10-15 on getting 1000w instead of 850w to make myself feel better.

      I do not really recommend any of the KF CPUs. I know u can save a bit more going for the one without built in graphics, but The Intel IGPU (built in graphics) does give it some advantage in apps like Photoshop n Premiere Pro. The 7800X3D is really good for gaming, but i wont say for content creation compared to the Intel or non X3D counterparts. If you can afford, go for the 14700k (non F)?
      But whats your budget?

      @@RealMelTan Why not KF CPUs? I'm looking at a new prebuilt pc with RTX4080 16gb and can't decide between i7-14700KF or i9-14900KF. I don't game at all and only do professional creative work. What do you think is best of these CPUs above?

  • @1SaG
    @1SaG 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +32

    I had my 14700 KF peak at 310W in Cinebench 2024 and spike to 340W in one of the CPU tests in Passmark's Performance Test. Went and lowered PL1, PL2 and max current in the BIOS (all set more or less to "unlimited" with stock settings) and also lowered the "CPU Lite Load" setting quite a bit. AFAIK, this is an MSI-only feature (or at least the name is) which will add more voltage under load to increase stability. Default setting on my board was "9" - I lowered it to 5 and left it there - I didn't try anything lower, but I might be able to get away with that. Others with identical configs report reducing this to to 3 or 2 while still retaining stability.
    All these changes resulted in max VIDs going down from ~1.45V to ~1.36V in all-core, 100% loads like Cinebench 24. Power draw is also a lot lower now as is heat. Benchmark scores only "suffered" very mildly from this - the loss in scores is so little that it might actually be within margin of error/normal variance between tests. Since this means I won't have to immediately upgrade my 240 AiO, I'll leave the settings like that for now. Performance is still way better than my old 12600K.

    • @RealMelTan
      @RealMelTan  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      OH nice! Thank you for the update and instructions.
      Yes I don't see any simple way or "CPU lite load"on the ASUS motherboard. But there's an ECO mode, perhaps thats the one which may reduce the power draw n temps for the 14700K.
      How hot is your CPU with your new settings?

    • @1SaG
      @1SaG 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@RealMelTan Day to day (gaming, normal work, browsing the web, etc), it's very manageable. Neither BG3 Act III nor IL-2 in VR on a Reverb G2 raise temps to anything worrying - in those situations it's usually around mid 50s to mid/high 60s on a few P-cores, with highest power draw usually between 50 and 75W. Loads like Cinebench are a different matter of course, but it's still acceptable (just) for the occasional test-run.
      EDIT: Crap.. looked at the wrong results-screenshot. Recorded max temps with the reduced settings were between 78 and 88°C on the P-cores in Cinebench 2024, with P-core frequency peaks between 5.5 and 5.6 GHz. Max power-draw was 243 W. I'd say that 240mm AiO *just* manages at these settings.
      Still: I don't think cooling is ideal and I wouldn't recommend a 240 to someone building a new system around the 14700K, but since I don't use this chip in high load, all-core work outside the occasional benchmark or rendering a video, I'm not too worried about the 240. I do see a 360 in my future though - if only to check how much of a difference it makes. But I do wonder if even that would be capable of dealing with 310 to 340 W of power draw ... :)

      I'm happy to hear you say that. I just ordered a 14700k and was kind of nervous if my arctic liquid freezer ii 240 would be enough. It is one of the best 240s with the thick radiator but still a little nervous.
      However it cools my 13600k exceptionally well and maintains 5.1ghz for all 10 minutes of cinebench, not throttling whatsoever. Not that I care about cinebench, just testing my coolers effectiveness. But what I really want from the 14700k is that extra cache, the extra p cores and the extra boost clocks for gaming.
      What do you think about disabling some ecores to save power/lower temps. I get that they're helpful for background tasks and what not but somehow I doubt I need 12 cores to run chrome while I game. Perhaps 4, or 8 would be enough?

    • @1SaG
      @1SaG 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@jessefisher1809 I haven't tried it yet, but from all I gather from guides/how-tos, the E-cores aren't really necessary in gaming. Might as well give disabling them a shot to see if they reduce power-draw/heat and by how much.
      Having played around with power-settings a bit more (this time using Intel XTU for added convenience), I *think* what really did it on my board was lowering that VCore/VID offset setting ("CPU Lite Load" on my MSI board). Default was "9" and I reduced it to "5" for the time being. Left it there and then upped the power limits and current limit into territory that before would've resulted in temps near 100°C and power-draw of ~300W and .... everything stayed within reasonable values that time. VIDs still maxed out in the mid 1.3V-range, not in the mid 1.4V range they had reached with higher PLs and the "Lite Load" setting at default.
      I would also definitely give it a shot with that Arctic Freezer of yours. AFAIK, that's one of the best overall and bang-for-buck AiOs currently out there and I always see it ranked towards the very top in most round-ups I've seen. Just don't expect it to be quiet at max load... my Lian Li Galahad 240's fans will spin up to over 2000 rpm at max and they do reach that speed when I run Cinebench or something like that. OTOH and as I've wondered before: I'm not sure you'd be able to run even a 360's fans at anything lower than 100% speed with a 100%, all-core load on the CPU, either.

I cannot stand the random 5 second freezing that occurs that lock up the pc and longer boot time. I have changed hardware and drivers yet same issues occur for me. Maybe i just had bad luck

    • @stephenhood2948

      Depends on the cooler and mounting. I would go with a 360, I heard of problems using new i7s under 240mm AIOs. Use a contact frame as well, may not be needed but I've read they can help, again depending on how the AIO is mounted. These CPUs tend to run hot. If you cant use a 360 you could always try undervolting it. I have a 12600k slightly overclocked under a 360 AIO and a 4070. Getting really good FPS at 1440p with temps never over 70 degrees while gaming, do see 75 degrees when benchmarking though.

    in your opinion is an aircooler like Deepcool Ak620 enough for the 13700K or 14700K?

    • @1SaG
      @1SaG 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      From personal experience with my Lian Li Galahad 240 AiO: The 14700K (KF in my case, but same thing, really) runs very hot when you leave the power limits on stock settings. AFAIK, a lot of boards (mine included) are set to unlimited PL1/2 and current out of the box. As I've stated in my own post here, I saw power draw peak at 340 Watts with this thing and PL1/2 set to 4096W. No OCing, BTW, outside of XMP and letting the board send as much power to the CPU as it wants. My AiO couldn't prevent temps hitting the red zone (100°C) on two or three cores during my runs in Cinebench. With limits lowered and the chip "only" peaking at 255W power draw, that Lian Li manages to keep things in the mid 80s. In gaming or simpler tasks, all this shouldn't be an issue, but if you plan on running this chip in high load/all-core scenarios a lot, I probably wouldn't use an air-cooler. In fact: With no limits set in the BIOS, I'm not even sure a 360 AiO would be able to keep temps under control in super high load scenarios. Can't prove it since I don't have a 360 available, but 310 to 340 Watt is a bit of a challenge for any cooling solution, I reckon.

    • @RealMelTan
      @RealMelTan  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      thank you @1SaG for the reply! Yes i agree with him. With the power draws and temperatures for both CPUs, I would recommend at least a 240 for the 13700K. The 14700K, a higher end 240 or 360 AIO would be better.

      It depends. If all you do is game, probably the 7800x3d. Care about power efficiency? 7800x3d. Do a lot of multitasking? Probably the 14700k, thought both would be fine. Do you do productivity work? Definitely 14700k. Care about high speed ddr5 compatibility? 14700k. Care about longevity of the platform? 7800x3d. Both are good gaming choices, both with their ups and downs.

    • @jessefisher1809
      @jessefisher1809 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@dathip Yeah most general computing multitasking should go better on a 14700k because of all the extra cores.
      The 7800x3d is absolutely the best at gaming. But only when its just gaming. When you have chrome, and discord, and your anti-virus, and a windows update running and whatever else, while you're gaming, the 14700k would do better.
      But of course it also draws more energy, now that can be lessened to a degree by undervolting and or setting in place intel's recommended power limits. Still the 7800x3d will use less power.
      I guess would say like, if all you care about is gaming, go 7800x3d, but if you want general computing + gaming at the same time, intel may be way the way to go.
      And no you don't need to run cinebench for this to matter. I agree that benchmark is pretty unrealistic.
