    What do you think of my first review of a HEDT CPU?
    TR or TR Pro CPUs?
    Check them out here: th-cam.com/video/Vhde8BQurbg/w-d-xo.html

    0:45 The normal Ryzen CPU's do not support quad channel. They only support dual channel, but they allow you to use 2 dimms per channel.

    Interesting video. Just spoke with some vendors and they quoted Samsung RDIMM 96GB single DDR5 RDIMM at around $320 incl. of taxes. Might just buy a 7960x or 7970x.

    • @RealMelTan
      @RealMelTan  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes These DDR5 RDIMMs are really expensive. How much RAM do you plan to get?

    • @Piyush.A
      @Piyush.A 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RealMelTan Going to max out at 384GB (96GBx4). Don't think Samsung manufactures 128GB or higher density DDR5 modules. It's a data science workstation so RAM gets gobbled up really fast.

    I don’t think the board is holding the cpu back on the GN stream they had 96 core running at 5.3 GHz and 1600 W, the CPU is efficient would be my estimate

    Thank you for doing this, i have been on the fence on what to upgrade to from my 3950X. i needed more cores for what i do and the 7960X will be perfect.

      If the 7950X is not good enough, yes u can consider this 7960X :)

    I would have liked to see some gaming benchmarks done, as this "cheap" threadripper would be very useful as someone who compiles their entire operating system stack.
    GamersNexus showed this cpu do a chromium compile in under 60mins which is just amazing for someone who once waited 33 hours for it to compile....
    So a cpu that can also handle a bit of gaming would just be excellent. The 7960X also has the highest base clock of the non-pro line.
    Also you really shouldn't overlay your face over the graphs, blocking the product names at 3:35

      I am trying to get a game test video on this CPU out. Will take some time, so I would like to ask for your patience haha
      Yes it has quite the high clock speed and power, it would be really interesting to see how it games. And I will take note of the graphs.

    It would be nice to see some gaming synthetic benchmarks or games run on this platform, simply because I'm sure there's people out there (like myself) that have workstation/AI grade work they want to run on a platform like this, but would also like to perhaps game on it. The 7960X seems like it may be the 'reasonable segway' from a AM5 platform to low end Threadripper without going in to the "well I'm spend $3k on a CPU" hole.
    I really hope other reviewers do a full & proper 7960X review too. It seems like it may be "the one" that gets AMD enough sales for Threadripper to really invest more time in to it, hopefully.

      These are not intended to be gaming CPU's, period. FULL STOP. Anyone who is dumb enough to pay for these CPU's with any intention for gaming then you're either a tool or just trying to stretch their e-peen. Nobody, I mean nobody who are buying these CPU's care about gaming unless they have fuck you money and the time to even play games. Sorry, I just find it hilarious how people expect the reviewers to test these out in games when it's abundantly clear that a $300 AMD outperforms by huge margins than a $1600 one. But alas, I'm sure we'll be having this conversation for another 10 years.

    • @RealMelTan
      @RealMelTan  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I will see if i can do a game test video. But it has to be reasonable. Because this CPU is really high end and out of the way for gaming. I understand where you are coming from, so i will think about it.
      In your opinion, is this 7960X review full n proper enough?

    • @RealMelTan
      @RealMelTan  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes you make good sense. But i guess there are people who want to use their CPUs for multiple reasons. Most of them do buy this for AI workloads and multi-tasking, but some still want to play games on the side.
      But all in a all, Threadripper CPUs are meant for work, and it still makes sense to spend the money on a better GPU.

    One typical use for this CPU would be heavy computational workload. You can consider software like Agisoft Metashape for 3D modelling and Ansys or OpenFOAM for CFD work.

    400W is *not* energy efficient. 800W is a space heater.

    • @RealMelTan
      @RealMelTan  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      hahah it is sorta efficient compared to the 800W monsters XD

    • @rah975
      @rah975 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Efficiency is relative. If the work it can do at 400W matches or beats what everything else needs 500w or more to do, then it's efficient.
      Whether or not if fits your needs/budget/goals is another matter.

    You know if you need one. Yes. All day, everyday - the answer is yes.
    If you need one, GET ONE. Mine works like Godzilla on steroids. 💪
    Besides - desktop gaming caters to mainstream - you won't NEED any of the hardware you put in this for gaming ; why disrespect it with running toy software on it? If you're in the market for a HEDT - just get a SuperTower case (or two cases) and have a consumer PC for gaming, your HEDT for work. I just kept my old PC which is a killer gaming PC by today's standards. It games better than a Threadripper .. but it's a toy clowncar compared to my 7960x. I imagine, most of us in the market for this CPU have a previous gen consumer CPU from the HEDT desert that was around for the past few years.

    Thanks for the video and insight.
    Where this starts to really make sense in my mind is using the pcie lanes more.
    For example, if you have a workstation graphic card like a W7700 or higher that supports 16 lanes.
    Use a primarily M.2 storage ( multiple ) that goes right to the motherboard and consumes pcie lanes.
    That will overwhelm the normal ryzen AM5 solutions and really start to show a bigger difference between the platforms, especially for blender.

    Why is single core test "surprisingly" - you can just look at the clock speed of both CPU and and see they are about the same lol

      @@RealMelTan I like that you reviewed the 24-core 7960x, while most other reviews are only covering the 32 or 64-core parts.
      I like that your review compares the 7960x against the last-generation 24-core Threadripper, as well as the current 16-core 7950x on socket AM5.
      I would buy the 7960x. For $2155 USD I can get the 7960x, motherboard, and cpu cooler. That's not too bad. And the motherboard has lots of PCIE lanes for multiple video cards, 10gb Fiber network cards, and lots of nvme drives. And tons of ram too, via the registered dimms.

    • @thewhitefalcon8539
      @thewhitefalcon8539 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I'm quite interested in getting the cheapest Threadripper and having tons of room to upgrade it later. I don't know what other people were expecting from a 7960X and whether it lives up to their expectations, but it still seems very fast. Even in 5 years if I want a faster computer, the better Threadrippers should have come down in price, and I won't need to upgrade anything else about my PC (maybe the power supply). Also being the first generation using this socket, the motherboard should be compatible with the next couple of generations. As long as I want a computer optimized for multicore tasks.

    • @DerekDavis213
      @DerekDavis213 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@thewhitefalcon8539 Good point. Today's $5000 64-core chip will be $1000 in a few years.
      And for people that are heavily into Blender, Maya, or AI, you could run two or three NVidia 4090 video cards. Insane performance! LOL

    • @thewhitefalcon8539
      @thewhitefalcon8539 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DerekDavis213 There will be another $5000 chip in a few years that will be even more awesome. My last computer lasted a very long time, but it was the top end of its socket - already with the fastest Intel consumer CPU and the maximum supported amount of RAM on the day I built it, and I don't really care about GPU so I never upgraded it since that day. It still performs well, but I think my next one will do even better by starting at the *bottom* of the next higher "upgrade tier".
      Also, Threadrippers have PCIe slots for days!

    • @undefwun2135
      @undefwun2135 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You don't need a test for this one if you watched any reviews on both cpus or looked at the platform specs.
      The 14900k will shit on the TR in any application that is single thread or lightly threaded, just based on clock speed and just how high you can tune RAM if you only need 2 sticks (max 96GB). So games or any production software like photoshop and lightroom, basic video editing and similiar go with the Intel.
      For anything that requires heavy multi threading and is RAM intensive, the TR is a clear winner. You can't get 1TB of RAM on quad channel on z790 platform and Intel doesnt do HEDTs atm.
      TRs are for engineers, researchers, ai, data crunching, high end compilations, big renders etc. With the amount of PCIE lanes on the platform you can cram like 3 4090s in at x16 or more likely workstation cards like the big boy data crunching A100X 80GB. You can't on the z790 platform.
