    You are the queen of shade. Your shade is so nonchalant and unassuming, it can go unnoticed if one isn't paying attention. 😂😂😂
    I agree with every bit of what you said in this video. Your regimen is super simple. No frills. No L.O.C. Coco lmao. 😆 I think some people get so caught up in doing all these complicated things that are so unnecessary!

      nappyheadedjojoba Loving this video! I know I'm late but I decided this week to really start putting my ends away (Im a braid out junkie) and I see your having a challenge! My hair has been 10 to 12 inches forever, started with 4inches of hair and through improper care I have only retained 6-8inches in 4 friggin years! I'm determined to change all that now since for the past 1yr and half the only thing I haven't done is put my ends away for a long enough time! Awesome ch! new subbie!🖒😄

    I love how you are unapologetically "you".👊🏽 This video was sooo good on so many levels. Some people have long hair, but are not really able to articulate the true essence of how or why they got there. Then let's be real, some people get lucky, or some have hair that will thrive no matter what is done to it. This video was confirmation and motivation. I've always thought there was such a maturity and wisdom to you when you talk about hair....it all makes sense now! You've been in the game for life! Ps. Your vocabulary is off the chain honey👏🏽. Much love ❤️

    I think it is really sad that in 2017 some people still doubt you or dismiss 4C hair can grow long and healthy . The youtubers will feel the need to come with damp shrunken hair to prove it on camera . You can clearly tell it is 4C yet some people will say "nope this is 4b because c is not curly"😐🤔 4c is curly hair too and yes it you have to manipulate it for them curls to pop up but we do have curls and it can grow long! A lot of people really need to let it go.

      There's always that one person that can't read. Yes, 4c hair is curly just like the original commenter said. It's really annoying that people refuse to do their research and instead choose to label 4c hair as one thing when it is in fact curly and everyone's 4c is very different. Out of all the people that live on this planet, everyone thinks there's only a select few hair types, lmao.

    • @nairmartinsgoncalves8816
      @nairmartinsgoncalves8816 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Chantabalay I can read actually, I did read it lmao. If you have to do everything in your power just for some curls you probably don't have curly hair 🤷🏾‍♀️ I guess if that was the case all hair types are curly because with enough effort you can make any of them curl. And I didn't say it as a bad thing lol it is what it is.

    Yes!!! I used to depend on hairstylist to do my hair and would literally be lost if they canceled my appointment. But now, thanks to YT, I'm able to care for and maintain my own hair. I had to learn that i couldn't mimic the routines and waste my money trying to buy every product I saw in the video. My hair still isn't the longest it's ever been (pretty close to it) But it is the healthiest it's ever been. Love the video!

    Honestly, if leaving your hair alone ain't the best advice ever. I used always play in more trying stuff out and wonder why my hair kept breaking. I just keep my hair in crochet braids now, sometimes sew ins and my hair has been flourishing. You gained a new subscriber here.

  • @nba178
    @nba178 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    I'm watching this in November 2019 and I agree with everything you say in this video, sis. We are a reflection of each other 🙂 Over are the days of tight braids, heavy hair, long hours in front of the mirror...no more.
    I listen to my scalp and hair and if it doesn't like what I'm doing, I stop. Now I know why I often suffered from headaches over a decade ago because there was too much weight and tension on my head😓🙄😒. I'm so grateful it put up with my nonsense during all those years and I still have hair on my head, lol 😂 My hair has improved over a few years now by becoming thicker, stronger, more manageable and longer.
    Like you said, it's more about how the hair is managed than the products being used. A person can be using the best product and at the same time be damaging their hair because of their manipulation of it. I've narrowed down to what products work for me and stay consistent. I only use one type of shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer and an edge control. I use to try many different products and soon realized it was part of why my hair would break. I live by "simplicity is more" , as my science teacher and mentor, Dr. Nartey often emphasizes.

From being natural since day 1, our parents never allowing perms, being tirelessly taunted at school for not chemically straightening it, my sisters and I lived in cornrows during our childhood too! My mom and grandmother would rip through our hair so we never retained length! And because of TH-cam I changed the way I treated my hair and that's when it began to flourish! 😂😂😫😫😫I used to trim my hair with the phases of the moon thinking it would help it grow! 😑 I'm sure I read it somewhere lol

    This video is so goooooood and honest! Thank Goodness for that😄
    The problem with your 1st point is in order to find a routine/system that works for you usually starts with you trying someone else's system and see if that works for you--it's almost impossible not to do this in your first year of being natural especially if you don't know how to handle natural hair (meeeeeeeee). But eventually like you said you get a routine that means you don't need many products or many steps! But thanks for all the tips!!! Great video!

    Whoop! I'm always so excited to see that you've uploaded a video ❤ It seems that a lot of our hair habits overlap-the protect your ends challenge is def making a difference! One thing I've notice for my hair is that my internal health and environmental factors have a HUGE impact on my hair. Low iron, new/worsening food allergies, stress, dermatological issues, moving to a new area w hard water, and the like have meant that I have to adjust my products and routine often 😑 it can be frustrating when a tried and true method or product suddenly backfire-so patience has been key. I've even adopted this new hippy-dippy practice of twisting my hair while saying a mantra/focusing on goals and mindfulness. Instead of thinking "fuck this is taking a long time! My neck hurts and that deep conditioner didn't do shit," I think, "warmth, authenticity, openness, patience, confidence" etc with each twisting motion. It sounds weird, but I notice that my posture is better and I'm more aware of how gentle I'm being. Also, if I can't be positive and chill while doing my hair, I don't do my hair that day. Not worth it. ...and for any of the prude haters out there: fuck pussy shit dick snatch titty-sprinkles

    • @nappyheadedjojoba
      @nappyheadedjojoba  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just love you, haha. I agree 10000% that diet/lifestyle also play a major difference! And the water in Cali is super duper hard (just replaced my shower filter this weekend...), and it makes life a lot harder. I'll have to try the positivity mantra, next detangling session, because I get straight up *mean* with each passing minute. "That deep conditioner didn't do shit," hahaha, I've BEEN THERE.

      OMG. I try to do the same. Except I will just keep thinking the word 'love"in my mind when I handle my hair. I too, am more careful and thoughtful. I started to do this because of an experiment done with water molecules when the intent behind the words were spoken to into this water...the results were that the negative words made dissjointed fragmented molecules and the positive molecules produced snowflake-like patterns and geometrical patterns.

    Girl you are soooo right about not trusting anyone with my hair. I got my hair done because I was traveling. I hadn't had anyone touch my hair in years...when I took the braids down, my edges were trash, my hair was lifeless. (She pulled a lot in the process and didn't take time with the tangles.) And yes I did take care of my scalp during the time I had my braids in. My trust issues were reconfirmed and now I'm back to not letting anyone touch my hair for any reason.

    Loved all the tips in the video! I recently went to get my hair flat ironed and trimmed and got about 5inches cut. The problem I have every time it gets straightened is the last 4/5 inches are so dry. I deep condition, trim, moisturize, protective style, etc. Have you or anyone reading this experienced the same thing. I know you don't heat style, so probably not you. Either way, thanks for always giving real and practical hair advice.

    • @nappyheadedjojoba
      @nappyheadedjojoba  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      How interesting. I haven't flat ironed, but it's possible I might make the same unfortunate discovery, if I did! Especially since it sounds like you're taking good care of your hair. I imagine there's some disconnect in your routine that might be accelerating the weathering of your ends, but I'm not sure what it might me. Or, it could just be the flat iron is too hot for your ends (possibly paired with an ineffective heat protectant?), since they'll have less of the cuticle layer intact, from being older than the rest of your hair. I dunno. The wheels are turning in my mind!

    Yeah I usually ACV rinses/scalp massage and sometimes soap, but cowashing for me would benefit the hair rather than the scalp. As shampoo= cleansing for scalp/ Conditioner = Softens hair, reintroduces moisture, seals etc, (and may contain gentle cleansing agents). However, ACV is also great for the hair, and I've been using it on both my hair and scalp.
    I appreciate this video and I agree abt the regurgitation of Natural Hair length retention and growth videos.

      Totally agree, re: shampoo being primarily for the scalp. Indeed, that was the main reason I switched back, because I like my scalp to be clean and fresh, since it's sort of like the soil for the hair that will sprout from it!
      My dental care routine is almost exactly the same, still, although I switched back to a commercial mouthwash, because the DIY one was leaving a weird buildup on my teeth. Even my dentist asked what I was doing differently. Not sure what you mean by tooth powder? I've never tried one.

    YASSSSSSS! When she said that natural hair was nothing new to her it really hit home. I was bullied for being one of the few naturals from day one at school with 4c hair. Now everyone is natural and wants to love themselves (which I'm all for) but this mess was nothing new.

    I really enjoyed this video. It's not a lot of TH-camrs that can make me watch an 18 video of just talking without me almost falling asleep on my chair. You and I share some of the same tips, especially the listening to your own hair and do everything that everybody else does and leaving your hair alone. And I love the way you're so articulate and not rambling all over the place. Great video.

    Finally someone who gave the same answer I always give then get dirty looks. I have bra length hair yet I always where hair extensions because I feel wearing wigs and weaves are what grew my hair out. I am never putting heat in it, I'm not pulling and breaking my hair apart so it has the opportunity to grow more and faster. But when I say that people are always looking for MORE. Thats it I wear extensions and I make sure to take it out once every 4 weeks I treat my hair trim it if needed, then put it back in!!!!! Thank you so much for sharing!

    but whats the point of having 25+ inches of beautiful hair if you never even wear it out or enjoy it... people are always under the assumption that the only way type 4 hair can be maintained is by protective styling.. which is not true... where does the pride come in at if you still wear a wig 24/7 ...

    • @tiadeni
      @tiadeni 7 ปีที่แล้ว +92

      You're using pretty definite terms like "never," "always," "only," and "24/7." Keeping it in a stretched state and/or tucked into styles that keep the strands away from excessive manipulation and harsh weather conditions preserves length. Breaks between protective styling are recommended, also. Hair is beautiful when it's healthy, and one who is taking precautions that they feel are abetting their hair's health sounds prideful to me.

    • @akeyajohnson1065
      @akeyajohnson1065 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      tiadeni thanks for your opinion but my comment was not for you, clearly you took what you wanted from the comment and definitely missed the point.. have a nice day

    • @nappyheadedjojoba
      @nappyheadedjojoba  7 ปีที่แล้ว +194

      "where does the pride come in at if you still wear a wig 24/7 ..." As I state in the video, I wear buns, various updo styles, twists, braids, headwraps, the odd braidout or twistout, and yes, wigs. I wear wigs around 0-5 days in a typical month, depending on my mood, so as far as wearing wigs "24/7," I guess you're talking about someone else. Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with people who do choose to wear wigs daily, as their protective style of choice. It's a great option.
      Not everyone defines enjoying his or her hair by wearing it down/out. Keeping my hair in protective styles is the way that *I* can best maintain *my* hair, which I also stated in the video. Frankly, wearing my hair down isn't usually worth the hassle to me, because my texture is so prone to tangles and breakage.

    Yesss! Speak your mind. Congrats on your 25" length.
    I really like the fact that you mentioned to NOT do what everyone else says works for THEM! I had to learn this the hard way. Also adding products because it worked for "whoever" did not work for me.
    The key is learning what our hair likes (individually) in order to achieve the goals we seek.
    I've had many issues with people doing my hair in the past only to find out that I had less of it, and I so agree with you about not letting anyone else touch your hair. I know that I'm much better off for it.
    This has been a very informative video and I appreciate you sharing.

    The loc method is the only, and cheapest thing that works for me. I do that when I wash my hair, then I just braid it up with shin n jam, and it stays moisturized.

  • @TamarasTreasureTrove
    @TamarasTreasureTrove 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you so much for making this! You share so many great points and you are unapologetic about being yourself, which is a reminder for us that self love is the first step to getting that length and health! Everything you said is really helpful - I may not follow the exact same techniques but most of what you said is critical and is what we need to hear more about. I never thought about abandoning combs/ brushes altogether but that’s a new action I’m going to try and take. I’ve always said physics is so much more important than chemistry when it comes to natural hair and you re-emphasized that concept perfectly. We don’t need 10,000 products! Keep doing what you’re doing and speak your whole ass truth bc your perspective is valid!

    I always refer back to your videos since I started doing my own protective challenge to see how long I can grow my hair. It's funny you mentioned not keeping your hair in a wet state. I saw this video and this girl said the key to her growing her hair super long was never letting it fully dry and she would cowash and re-wet her twists every other day. Can you do a video on hydral fatigue? I have 3c/ 4a hair and it seems like everyone with very long, healthy hair uses the same method: protect it and leave it alone. So that's what I'm going to do!

    new subbie from London. I like your no nonsense attitude.
    Have been 'natural' nearly 6 years and I think I'm also just starting to appreciate the 'whole practise means more than product thing'. Still doesn't stop me being a bit of a junkie though!!
    Interested also in your keep your hair stretched comment. I think it makes wash days easier- less tangles/detangling. Of course it's easier as your hair grows (which is why i'm trying to retain length - mainly for the sake of stretching and maintenance!)
    Also good to be reminded to be gentle!!
    Sadly I have now decided to never let someone else do my hair anymore either. SO FED UP with wasting time and money at salons - even supposedly 'curly hair specialist' ones!!
    Thanks for taking the time to make the video!
