Horse Acupuncture-Liam and Quinn the rescued Belgian Draft Horses get acupuncture with Dr. Hardy

    Many of our subscribers reached out to us in the comments and said we needed to look into getting acupuncture for our horses. All the Belgian Draft Horses here on our farm are older horses with medical conditions and they are here for retirement after working their whole lives. Our horses were all rescued from almost shipping to slaughter.
    Liam and Quinn were both rescued from Bowie Texas Livestock. When we picked Liam up from the livestock yard he could barely walk. We found out that he suffers from coffin and pastern joint arthritis. Quinn was rescued literally off a slaughter truck because the truck was overfull. We rescued Quinn but he came to us with cellulitis which is a condition that results in inflammation and sometimes infection of the subcutaneous tissues that lie beneath the skin. It commonly affects only one limb at a time and is most likely in the hind end. We took Quinn to the vet right away and he did not have an infection but he has a severely swollen left hind leg.
    I started researching equine acupuncture and found Dr. Megan Hardy of Amarillo Equine a vet here in the Amarillo area that did acupuncture. She happened to be the same vet that treats our dogs! Small world! I contacted Dr. Hardy and discussed the horses conditions. She felt that acupuncture would definitely benefit Liam and Quinn along with some of the other horses. So we got an appointment scheduled with her as soon as we could and this video is our appointment here on the farm. She also gave us a few other suggestions on additional treatments for the horses that we will be implementing.
    Acupuncture involves the insertion of a sterilized, stainless steel needles through the skin at predetermined sites (acupuncture points) for the treatment of musculoskeletal problems: muscle soreness, back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis, degenerative joint disease, obscure lameness, laminitis and pain management.
    We hope you enjoy this video as much as we did while filming it. This was a very educational experience on equine acupuncture and we can't thank Dr. Hardy enough for taking the time to explain everything that she was doing during the treatment and why it benefited the horses.
    Make sure you subscribe to our channel so you don't miss anything happening around here! Because it's never a dull moment!

    I am so happy you are saving these magnificent horses from slaughter. It is sad that they are used for hard labor and then when they get old they are sent to slaughter. That is just wrong! I hope the acupuncture works for Quinn and Liam. They are such sweet horses. I am in the desert of Arizona where it has been 115 degrees for a month now. Hoping it gets a little cooler soon for all the animals..

      I keep reading that stem cell injections are getting better results in humans with joint issues in their spines, hips, knees and ankles. I wonder if the same would be true for Liam?

      @@carolwithers5478 Stem cells are extracted from living HUMAN embryos; after which, the fetus dies - another human life is callously ended in the name of science. I seriously doubt it’s safe to inject human stem cells into a horse. As far as I’m aware, they aren’t creating horse embryos in the lab for purposes of stem cell extraction, but I could be wrong.

      I was shocked to learn when attending a TAFA conference some years ago that some of the Amish in the Lancaster PA area have puppy mills. ( ASPCA film ). Some rescuers try to buy the used up breeders before they are killed, but this has to be done very anonymously. So the fate of the horses is not so surprising.

    Dr. Hardy seems like an awesome vet! She explained and showed well. I have received acupuncture treatments and they have helped me tremendously! I hope Quinn and Liam have great benefits, too. Liam was definitely reactive on the front legs - which mirrors his challenges in those feet. Thank you for taking us along! Both horses were very, very well behaved. It’s a good sign Liam reacted so strongly for his treatment!

Liam looks so good for his age - his coat is real nice, and now that his mane is growing in he is a real looker, I pray for all that pain to leave them, they must of worked real hard for humans and now you are working hard for them. God Bless you and them.

    Thank you so much for the update Julie ❤ Dr Hardy is a fantastic vet and I love watching her. I would like to say that I had the Osphos injections done for my horse Murphy. He has bone cysts in his back leg and also arthritis in his front legs. He had the first injection 4 years ago, the second 6 months later and the third one year later. He hasn't needed anymore since. He is on pain medication, Equioxx and has a buteless powder mixed with his food. The Osphos really helped him. Here in Germany one injection cost me 450Euros 😢 now the price has gone up 30% but if he needed it I would have done again. Thank you for looking after these gentle giants with so much love and having them treated properly. A huge thank you to Dr Hardy ❤

    Liam is so adorable. His personality is so darn cute for such a huge boy! 😍 He so easy going. Seeing him walk up behind you at the end of the video. His ears were all perked up he seemed to be walking a bit more comfortably. He had his thinking cap on, wondering who is she talking too? Then his big nose checks out the camera. I think he seen you talking to that thing before! So he had too check it out! I think he has gotten very attached to you! I had a friend who hurt his back at work & was stuck bent over. He could not stand straight up at all. His wife rushed him in for acupuncture & in five minutes all his muscles completely relaxed & he was able to straighten up. He said it was the most incredible relief he had ever felt. It seems the horses got some relief as well. God Bless you!

    If you are seeing good results with acupuncture you many want to consider learning how to do acupressure. It uses almost all the same medians and points used in acupuncture but the nerves are stimulated by fi ger pressure at the points test stimulate the nerves and followed as you release the pressure with directed massage in the muscles in that area to increase blood flow. While acupuncture is only done perhaps weekly to monthly to give rest between therapies, acupressure can be done daily. It can help enhance the effectiveness of acupuncture and has the added benefit of something that can offer pain relief and muscle relaxation on a daily basis while helping to increase circulation and reduce inflammation.

    When I was told I could try acupuncture I thought omg it going to hurt but I have about 7/8 tattoos and about 25 piercings and I wasn’t sure but when I did try it I was appsoultly shocked that I didn’t feel a lil wee needle but it did help so I have high hopes for your horses to be a wee pain free 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊 and to see the trust in the horses eyes is a very big blessings that they stand still and except what you do to them as it’s a trust as many have been badly treated before they came to you to love them and experience each of the horses and they are just stood there expecting your love to them 😊😊😊😊😊

    I learn so much about the options for treating pain & the things that cause the pain by watching your channel. Now maybe I can share something with you that seems to be helping my big girl. I use a product that is called Devil's Claw Plus by Uckele brand. It also contains other supplemets like boswellia,turmeric, & yucca. I haven't tried buteless, but it helps my girl be able to get up after laying down at night My perch has recently had xrays that reveal ringbone. I will be checking back to see how the acupuncture works after a couple days pass. I think a vet in my area does acupuncture, so if it works for your horses, I will try it for mine.

    Leaving the sprinkler run like that and having them, both Champ and Oliver, go stand under it, is also great for their hooves. It helps prevent cracking in extreme heat situations. Oliver, from when you got him until now, has literally done a complete 180° !! He's stunning and a beautiful example of the Clydesdale breed. And yes, where he's from is a very well-known breeder of Clydesdales here in Canada. They sell them to the Amish community and Mennonite Community here. So that's how he might have ended up in the USA, via an Amish family member from here to there. Just a thought to consider. From your friend, the Retired Paramedic, and a S&R Dog and Handler Team Trainer and Horse Trainer in Ontario, Canada, Jenn. 💖 🇨🇦 🇺🇲

    • @jenniferlehman326
      @jenniferlehman326 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @lianeschwarzwalder7289 No, I'm not. I've been following this channel since BEFORE they got Oliver. And living in Canada, and being a Horse Trainer, I know quite a few breeders, and what they breed, and I've heard nothing but great things about the breeders of Oliver. And I also worked at different racetracks here in Canada, as well as Breeding barns. Where I learned about breeding and foaling. So I'm NOT on the wrong channel. And it's a well known, SCIENTIFIC FACT, that if a horse, in EXTREME HEAT, can stand in a sprinker, wher ground gets soft and muddy, it will help prevent CRACKS from developing in their hooves. I hope you have a great evening. From a Retired Paramedic, a S&R Dog and Handler Team Trainer and Horse Trainer in Ontario,Canada, Jenn. 💖 🇨🇦

      @@lianeschwarzwalder7289 You're correct!! Sorry, I meant to post that on another channel!! But I've been following this channel as well since before they got Liam. And the same holds true here. If the water tank overflows, and they stand in it as they take a drink, it does prevent cracks from forming. Thank you for pointing that out. I do appreciate it!! Sorry for my long rant in my earlier post!! Love Jenn.💖

    I never thought much of acupuncture, chiropractics (except after trauma) or massage* as regular health components... for humans let alone animals. Then I began riding more competitively at a hunter/jumper barn. Regular visits from all care providers was part of boarding/training. I became a believer! Just like a good farrier and equine dentist! Some believe in Reiki, not as sure about that. But for a healthy horse, I'd try anything besides a gallon of drugs.
    *who doesn't love a good massage now and then, but I never considered it a regular part of healthcare, let alone horsecare.

    How do you measure progress for Liam? Is it simply improved mobility, or are there certain lab tests that measure progress?
    I loved watching you leaning on Liam as you were chatting with the good doctor. It’s fun to see a massive horse like him being held back by the human being.

    Liam and Quinn behaved like perfect gentlemen didn't they..such beautiful boys..Quinns leg isn't as huge as it was when you rescued him..cellulitis is horrible..my friend had it ..funny how us humans get these illnesses too.. I think its fantastic that they do acupuncture and chiropractic therapy for animals now..look at how bent those needles were..that was amazing to see. I hope it helps them..they deserve a long happy retirement after all they have given in work abd loyalty only to be disguarded when they're unable to do it anymore..great idea for you to Julie..you said you have osteoarthritis..I do too..my mom had to wear a steal corset for yrs but then was referred to a chiropractor and had acupuncture and after 6 months of treatment she never had to wear that corset again..she was even able to go back dancing with my dad. They said that the dance stance would help her spine too..worked wonders..as you were talking I could see Liam walking up behind you. .it was sooo funny..he wanted more camera time..🤣..another chanel I watch uses buteless too..but in a paste form as well..more for an instant kick I think..look forward to your next update. .stay safe in the heat you are having over there..whilst here🇬🇧 its done nothing but rain solid for nearly 3 weeks..last 2 days dry..sending love and prayers for you all. GOD BLESS YOU ..🇬🇧💞✝️🙏👍👏👏👍🐎🐎🐎🇺🇸

    Julie I’m just THRILLED to see this! All your rescues are wonderful but there’s just something about that Liam… when I worked in equine chiropractic and acupuncture the levels of recovery were truly astonishing to see, I sincerely hope it helps your boys ❤ imho the fact that you’re willing to try, ask questions, seek out these therapies and spend precious donation dollars on the more expensive options really sets you apart!
    Question: i might be misremembering but wasn’t there discussion of going with HA (hyaluronic acid) joint injections for Liam originally VS the steroids? I must have missed the reason you/vet chose not to go that route 🤔

    • @FletcherFarmsAmarillo
      @FletcherFarmsAmarillo  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for the wonderful comment. The first set of injections we did for Liam was an injection to give him more cushion in the joint. We did take him recently for a second set of injections which were regular steroid injections. They seemed to help and after the acupuncture he seems to be walking better. Not as stiff. We are going to try the OsPhos injection for Liam that Dr Hardy recommended. She has seen great improvement with horses taking the med that have severe arthritis like Liam and some of the other horses.

    Just had to let you know I praised you for you're rescue of the horses from slaughter house that Amish sold to read a post on u tube of Amish guy say how one horse dropped dead in field while working,and stated when a horse died his dad would use nieghbours phone for someone to come get horse for slaughter house they only eat animals with split hooves,the horse was unclean to eat but ok to be made into dog food ,the video Iam referring to was called what do Amish do bury horse after it dies (Eli Yoder)

    • @FletcherFarmsAmarillo
      @FletcherFarmsAmarillo  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s so sad and breaks my heart. The issue I have thought about is most of the horse meat is processed in Mexico or Canada and sold to other countries for human consumption. There are no regulations on what animals get processed. The sick ones go right into the food chain and it’s a disgusting process. I’ll look for that video too.

    Acupuncture for humans is fantastic. It calms the mind and spirit as well as issues in the body. I have enjoyed "Five Elements Acupuncture" many hundreds of needles worth. "Community acupuncture" is very affordable compared to one-one session with an acupuncturist. Results are best noticed immediately afterwards and for a few days more. Quiet, peaceful activities afterwards support acupuncture's healing energy versus loud, raucous movements/scenarios/environments/people.
    Well done! Animals respond marveously to acupuncture.
    Also eneregy work: Book: Jin Shin Jyutsu for Your Animal Companion is outstanding and easy to understand with diagrams too.

    Interesting to hear her take on Osphos and Adequan. My guy had an Osphos shot in Nov. along with steroid injections in his hocks. That didn't last as long as a year as before so he chose to do ProStride injections which have worked very well so far. Love the acupuncture! I have been doing almost daily acupressure/Masterson method and massage and that makes a big difference and keeps me in tune with how he is doing as he's very communicative. The sounds too good to be true Osteo Max supplement is helping a lot too. Looks like a full time job staying up with care for those big guys.
