      I agree unless he has hoof issues. My old mare had front shoes & none on back feet for spring, summer & fall. Then snow shoes in winter bc I rode her alot. She loved romping in the snow.
      No flies, not hot.. Rode bareback to be warm.

      I'm sure you're right! After such terrible abuse and illness, to be saved by JR and his family, working with JR every day to establish trust, and being treated so well by him, with his training being based only on kindness and trust, I'm sure they have a very strong bond of love. And being in a strange place, I'm sure Oliver is very much looking to him for familiarity and safety, basing his own mood very much on his "dad's."

    I had the most fabulous horse I've ever had many years ago. He was a SHIRE & QUARTER HORSE cross. He stood 17.5 hands, I trained him to be a saddle horse for trail riding & endurance rides. We rode the TEVIS CUP every year, seems like he barely even had to breathe hard, he always topped the vet checks, too! He wore such massive shoes I had found an actual REAL BLACKSMITH who came out to my place every 6 weeks & he literally FORGED & MADE SHOES FOR MY HORSE from size 3 draft horse 'BLANKS'. The heel & toe of the shoes were custom made every time specifically for my horse & the kind of rough mountain trail riding I did back then. He never threw a shoe or ever had a shoe come loose. They were as set as they were the very day they were made & put on, no matter how many miles we rode in the 6 weeks between 'pedicure' appointments. Rain, mud, snow, it didn't matter we rode at least 6 out of 7 days a week. At least an average of 25-35 miles a day. That seems like so long ago, well I guess it was. Give you a hint, I was never charged more than $20 for the job to be done. Ranch call & all. There was a forge & anvil mounted to his truck bed so that he was completely mobile & could go anywhere up the steep mountain roads where I lived! I really miss those days. My horse lived to be 36 years old & was in fantastic shape! He looked like he was built from the ground up. Sort of like looking at a massive tree grown from the root up!! He would go up, over or through anything I asked of him without a second of hesitation!! Best horse I've ever had!!!!

    • @bh1264
      @bh1264 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@donnasmith9939 THANK YOU!! Yes, a very cool memory. However, we spent so much time over that 36 years together riding, living, just becoming as one with each other. I always knew that all I had to do was THINK about what I needed him to do & he was doing it before my thought was complete. For example, riding in the dark of night on a barely-there deer trail with next to no moon light, yet I trusted my faithful horse absolutely completely. I knew that he could detect the deer trail FAR BETTER THAN I EVER COULD! So, just trusting him, giving him his head, knowing that he knew how much I trusted him, he ALWAYS GOT BOTH OF US SAFELY TO OUR DESTINATION. Never even a mis-step or stumble either! Fabulous trail partner for many, many very happy years!

You were a great steward for your trail pal. I never had the opportunity to have a horse, my cousin was the horse woman in our family. I just got to be the cannon fodder for training! I can't tell you how many trees I got drug through and under. All in all, I actually loved all the parts to caring for horses.

    I'm so glad Oliver did as well as he did at the farrier's. That young man did a great job on his hooves. I wonder if Oliver kicked him because his leg was hurting or he needed to rest it on the ground for a moment. Not all farriers would have been so kind and patient in that situation. When I was a young girl, a farrier came to our farm to work on my horse's hooves. Mitzi was restless and had difficulty settling down. The farrier took his metal rasp and hit her hard across her face. I just about died. I ran and got my dad, telling him what had happened. Needless to say, we found a different farrier. Watching Colt play with the ball was a hoot! He really seemed to enjoy it. Maybe, in time, Oliver will learn to enjoy playing with it, too. Thanks for sharing!

    Watching Sweet Oliver and Colt always makes me smile. Colt just staring at that ball made me laugh so hard... I noticed Oliver looking at the other horses as they looked at him... I'm sure Oliver was asking them... "What in the world do I do with this?" What a great video!

    Great video, Oliver’s grown so much, he looks wonderful. He was so well behaved for the farrier xxx it must be a strange feeling for them backing out of a trailer, seemingly into thin air 😲 my dad built a horse box to fit the deck of his big old international truck when we were young and it could take 4 or 5 horses. He would back up to a loading bank on arrival to an event then back at home (NZ) It was a common way to transport horses then, i don’t think any of ours even entered a float, (trailer) and they had doors which were lowered and became ramps for them to back down. Wonderful days 😊😊 thankyou so much for sharing, yours is my favourite video to click onto. Love to you all xxx

    You can see from where his ears are, he didn't want to finish, but he did it. And I am sure his respect and love for JR helped a lot too. Thumbs up for the young Amish farrier as well.

    I could watch Colt playing with the ball for an entire video. Looks like Oliver was walking better after his visit to the Ferrier. Looking forward to seeing Oliver get his shoes.

    So glad you were able to have Oliver's hooves trimmed. Hope you can get connected to someone who make him shoes. It was humorous to see Colt attempt to challenge the ball 😆. Maybe he can convince Oliver to get interested.

    JR as a retired farrier I can say that with a young horse leave them untied and stand holding them on the same side the farrier is working. So if the horse blows up you can pull the head towards the farrier and he or she can get away!

    My uncle was a farrier up in Washington state. I don't think he ever worked on a draft, but he never turned any horse away!
    I got to go with him occasionally and would hold the horses for him!
    Oliver was better than some of the horses I held for my uncle😕

    I glad to see a full video of this. The short left me wanting more! I’ve only recently found your channel and I’ve gone back to catch up on Oliver and some of the others, it’s been really cool to see the way you handle them, I grew up reading books with these methods and it’s really cool to see them in action many years later.

    Finding a good farrier was always a struggle with my horses, not too many young people going into the trade these days, so it’s nice to someone so young and so gentle. This young man will go far! I was surprised he’s had EPM and is doing so well! I’ve never seen a horse survive it to be honest, but vet medicine has come so far these days, glad to see it!
