Maybe an interior manual bolt too, so if power is off and battery runs out, it can be secured from inside. Also, something to see from the inside to outside discreetly.

You never want a panic room with a door that opens out. It can be jammed with just about anything, and then you're trapped inside while they might try to smoke you out or otherwise. Panic rooms always have to have an inside opening door.

I want to build a house with the upstairs master bedroom closet smack on top of the downstairs hallway coat closet, with a hidden door in the back of both, and a fire pole running from floor to floor behind the false wall. You can hang pegboard and guns, smoke grenades or whatever. Magically teleporting to the ground floor while your enemy ascends the stairs has many advantages.

To hide the door better, taper both edges in a couple degrees slightly so it overlaps frame on outside, and taper jamb in opposite direction so they fit into each other, and door is just slightly larger on visible face than the part that goes into jamb. Makes a tighter opening. Takes a little extra fitting but result is invisible. Use 2 mag locks in case door moves out at bottom over time, will hold it tight so it's invisible. Can also add a couple of adjustable plastic rub blocks in jamb to hold door in exact position each time when closed, in case of settling or hinge sag over time. Result will be invisible.

You can swap out that keypad for an NFC type key fob, with the receiver mounted behind a wood panel. That would mean you wouldn't need any exposed keypad.

GrandStream GDS3710 Door Phone: Camera + Keypad + Keyfob all in one. You can set up a DVR to record the camera. I think the advantage of a keypad is you can always type it in if you don't have your keyfob with you. There are also Keypads that work with Keyfobs so you have both. The GDS3710 is the only unit that I know that also has a camera.

One thing that sticks out a little on camera is the black steel door frame color showing through the gap. You probably won't know it is there honestly but you should also paint that portion of the door a lighter color to match the shadow of the ship lap. Otherwise please keep up the great work!

Great idea, but you never want a fail safe lock. Mag locks are fail safe... just imagine, kids or someone alone in your house, power goes out for the entire day, then door will unlock, AND will automatically push itself open (because of the mechanical rode). Plus you need to maintain the backup battery. If you store guns, please fail secure the lock and install an second way of ingress. Safety first before looks.

I haven't had a chance to go through all the comments yet, but as a lock/security buff... I would make sure to change out the lock of the keypad override... If you've ever seen any videos on PEN Testing (physical facilities penetration testing) by Deviant Ollam (and others, but his is the name I remember), many of the DKS system boxes (granted, he showed the ones used for apartment/building entrance) all use the SAME KEY... which is easily available through the internet!!... other than that, cool idea and execution... the only thing I'll add, if you paint all the gaps (where the lap occurs) black, then you will be less likely to see the door gaps.

Thanks Matt & Jordan. The other access systems besides keypads for maglocks/etc... are the keycard/magnet systems (wear there’s a hidden actuator & activator in wall & when run keycard or put a magnet up to the spot, it activates a system that opens the door). Those are pretty cool; have you used those types before instead of keypads & keyfob/door readers?
Do you personally prefer a door strike system or maglock system? Did a private school’s security system with maglocks, electronic crash bars, PIDs, Infra Heat/motion detectors, glass break, hidden cameras inside smoke detectors, etc.....systems. Can get systems that are so cool & technical, or simple ones....either way, just love the tech & design aspect of the industry.....
Maybe can do a vid on other “security” system & the different tech that goes is them along with how a system is designed for a particular client/building etc....(just love that part of the job)....

I think i might move the key pad away a bit from the door (next wall). That way if a bad guy somehow find the keypad it doesn't advertise that the door is right there. Probably overthinking it though.

When you've got access to firearms its not so much a panic room, its more a means to make the bad guy either flee or undertake the slow transition to room temperature. I would prefer a multiple dead-bolt system with a manual internal lever that serves as the safety override to the magnetic locks

Being a professional locksmith for 20 years...I really like this room! The term fire safe gets thrown around alot...I have installed and worked on every kind of safe you can imagine. Fire safes in MY OPINION are not worth the money,weight...etc. I've seen the "waterproof, fireproof safes" after a flood and a fire. Flooding will destroy everything inside the safe except for gold, silver. After a fire, almost everything in the safe will be ruined. I use a heavy duty cabinet and a small non fire resistant safe for my guns and important paperwork.

    • @noonenoesbutme
      @noonenoesbutme 5 ปีที่แล้ว

No way. I responded to the Tubbs fire in CA and was searching burnt down homes for victims. We would break open visible safes and transfer the contents to the sheriffs (because looters would try to hit safes at night). Non fire safes had everything torched. We found countless guns in safes that were just skeletons of what they used to be. Anything not metal was gone, aluminum parts like AR lowers had melted into puddles inside the safes.
Then we would break open the fire rated safes and there would be house deeds, stacks of cash, LOADED guns that not only survived the ordeal put didn't cook off rounds inside the safe.
Fire rated safes WORK. Period. To say they don't is doing a disservice to anyone who is interested in getting one. As locksmith, customers value your opinion and you should not spread false information about your own line of work.

The average person wouldn't never notice the hidden room. Great job on the craftsman ship. However, an experienced team would. If the house is cleared and with a little light the second person should notice the slight gap at 0:35 as they make room entry at the door. Just lower the door panel or raise the other side so they are uniform. But great job nonetheless.

If you accidentally turn on the (motion activated?) light while you are inside and somebody is sniffing around outside, the light leakage over the top of the door is an immediate clue that there is something there. Maybe add a headboard across between the kicker plunger and the magnet?

i install card access systems for a living - i would not have gone with door king - that room is only as secure as the lock on the front of that keypad - so basically, not secure as all... a better card access system is recommended, something that removes the lock relay from the card reader...
