Had watched this video about a year ago I believe... never thought I could actually build it through. Here i am today, finally starting the build. Rip my guy, you always helped us make the coolest things.
My dad was talking about getting one of these secret shelves and this video immediately came to mind... I decided to build him one for Christmas. Rest easy friend, thank you for all your wonderful projects.
Being what I consider myself to be a beginner to moderate wood worker, This video caught my eye. I figured that I would give it a try. 2 days later, following these pretty detailed instructions, I finished my Stealth Shelf. It looks amazing. Looks Exactly like this one (except for the finish) and works perfectly. This gentleman put out one heck of a nice video. Thank you.
Just finished my prototype model for the shelf and it came out great. Thank you for this great project model, RIP. You gave me a couple days of fun with this.
You did a very nice job making that floating shelf. I saw the other video you mentioned, and yes, definitely a pricey item. Lipstick works great for marking things like you did with the toothpaste, but more precise.
I finally got around to building this! Followed the directions exactly and made an awesome quality shelf. Looks terrific on my wall, too. Very pleased and glad to build another one of Grant's projects. Thanks a million for this excellent video and simple instructions!
An easy simple build. Simple carpentry skills here. I bought a ready made one for 200 a couple of months ago and it had a RFID lock that made a horrible loud beep when ever you opened it and cheap foam. I replaced it with a mag lock and also replaced the foam with the Diamond plate alum. Thanks for the vid.
Just built one, took less than 2 hours and works great, awesome video. Had to vary my measurements a bit because my crown moulding is 3-5/8. Going to make a dozen as Christmas gifts.
Yes they are illegal. It's fine to have them, but illegal to sell them. It has to do with the small toys. Somehow american kids were eating the toys while kids in every other country were fine. Maybe it's down to parenting? Either way we can't enjoy them unless you're lucky and have easy(ish) access to foreign countries like relatives who can bring them over perfectly fine.
I can just imagine him walking into the house this happening.... GRANT : I got some shelves and im going to put them up in random places. WIFE : What? Why? GRANT: Because i figured we need some new shelves. WIFE : This isnt an experiment is it? GRANT: N-no... WIFE: Then whats it for? GRANT: *Groan* Fine. I need it to store my gun. WIFE: YOU HAVE A GUN????!!!!!
or your can just lay the crown molding flat on the saw, put your angle at 45, and then set the bevel on the saw, and cut it laying down flat. perfect cuts everytime and you dont have to prop it up like you were doing
I'm proud to finally present the Stealth Shelf Tutorial! Will you click "share" and spread the love?! (It's really the best thing you can do if you want to say thank you) Most of the materials are in the description, but I'll add some quick links below... It's currently 2:45am.... I have watched about 5 of these "hidden" shelves and even where to buy premade ones.... But your video is by far the most professional, well built, and comprehensive out there! Thank you so much. Would have like to know how you mounted it to the wall though...
I bought all the supplies you listed. I cut the crown molding to 45 degree corners as you said, but then it would not fit to the bottom as yours did. I had to angle cut the edges of the bottom so the crown molding would fit with 45 degree corners. Then the top with your measurements was way to small. The top needed to be 26” x 12-1/4” to fit. I had to get plywood to make the top that large. Then the rope trim was not long enough so I had to buy more. I do have it built, just a little bigger. The fault for my problems are not really yours, but if you would have been more specific about the crown molding, I would not have had these problems or the extra expense. The flat edges of the crown molding must be 1” and the right angle to fit with 45 degree corners. I do appreciate your video. If not for you I would not have built this, so Thanks!
You can see 4 screws near the hinges at 10:22 in the video, I believe this is how he secured it to the wall, most likely they are spaced with the studs in the wall in order to mount securely
most houses have studs of wood 2x4s that run vertically every 16 inches from center to center sometimes every 24 inches. you can tap on your wall and hear when the sound changes from a hollow sound to a nice tapping sound to find the studs then mark or measure them where you want your shelf and screw through the back peice of wood he has on the inside of the shelf into the studs of your wall. You can also buy a $10 stud finder at the hardware store that will shine a light and beeb when it finds the edge of a stud. it's a good idea to drive a screw or nail into your wall to double check the stud is where you think it is before you permanently mount anything. this does make holes so be careful.
Its become apparent that the author of the video has passed. I want to say thank you for this great piece of knowledge that I've greatly enjoyed. You were obviously a professional.
+Jason Lombardi Lots of people, and with crown that big a 12" saw might be necessary which most home-gamers definitely do not have. Yeah a miter box would work well enough though, could even make one in about 3 minutes.
I did my crown molding on my fireplace mantel with a circular saw. The corners came out near perfect. Just used a bit of wood filler and it's virtually seamless once sanded and painted.
if you are holding a flashlight and a gun you need to hold the flashlight AWAY from your center mass that way if you are against someone else with a gun they shoot towards the light and not your center mass
Not happening my friend. I used to make and sell the exact kind of shelf he made in this video. I even sold the at gun shows. 90% of the time people preferred buying them online so they could remain somewhat anonymous. I made them custom sized of the customers requests.

Salabetta if you were to store a gun in it it would be very heavy especially with the diamond plated steel in there. You would need some sort of reinforced walls with reinforced screws or something like that
NoLube In my opinion, it's just a toy you have fun with. If you don't like then throw it away. What if she's hiding one? Would you rather she throws it away or hide it? At least be fair.
Flabbymeat hiding it in this was just for the lols, i threw it away when i moved because people where helping me, including my mom and its only 100 bucks.

Aaah that classique 12 inch saw blade we OF COURSE all have. xD
as basic as it gets
You could just use a 5$ plastic 45 degree cutting guide and a hand saw. That's like a 20$ solution if you don't have the power tools.
Literally one of the most basic tools of a home shop...
So glad to be in a school that has a wood shop.

It's basic woodworking skills, it is easy if you have the tools.

9:30 I though Kinder Surprise was illegal in the United States? Is that why its in the stealth shelf?
It's illegal to sell not to own
My family brings them in all the time from Mexico. Along with some cocaine of course. Because laws work and imaginary lines are real.
+92JoseR really? I have learned it's better to make the stuff in Canada and ship it down inside of syrup.
Yes they are illegal. It's fine to have them, but illegal to sell them. It has to do with the small toys. Somehow american kids were eating the toys while kids in every other country were fine. Install drywall anchors where you want the screws to go. Or just make it long enough to go into two studs.
