  • I found a secret hidden room in my house and did this! Today I am making a hidden door to a secret room in my daughter’s closet. This secret hidden door into a safe room acts as shelving in her closet, but with the push of a invisible hidden secret lock the door swings open to reveal the hidden room. This hidden door to the secret room with a secret room is invisible unless you know its there. #hiddendoor #secretroom #secretlock

    The door should have pushed into the secret room. That way you can seal the front wall with trim and not see the door and also means it won't open out on to her clothes.

    The first half of the th-cam.com/users/postUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

      She always had the room, it's just now secret with the bookcase instead of door, but it's pretty obvious something is up with that book case cause it's trimmed out like a door cept for oops we forgot about that little part that would be going in instead of out. The solution, I think would be to nail it above the door instead of to the door, but that's just a thought.

    Instead of the complicated spring loaded dowel with cables and pulleys, you could have just made the dowel the axle attached to the locking bar. The mechanism would be simple and less likely to malfunction. A quick twist of the dowel lifts the bar and unlocks the door. If the length of the bar makes it awkward or too heavy to unlock by turning the dowel, adding a bit of counterweight would fix that.

    • @MandrakeDCR
      @MandrakeDCR 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      That sounds great until you have wood twisting inside of wood with weighted friction a few dozen times. So, you would still end up with the same amount of engineering since you'd need to get some bearings, match and countersink them for that purpose to prevent wear and still keep the outward appearance correct, keeping it internally locked in position so you don't need a limiting washer on the outside identifying which one it is, etc.
      Either way is fine, the way they did it is just simple, cheap, and it's a fun mechanism.

      @@TheFallenFaob I'm sure it would work, but the whole point of it was to have something visually fun for his daughter. Not to mention, you're still talking about a lot of extra detail work for no good reason other than 'for the sake of it'. If you're going to do that, then just simplify it and do a magnet catch. No muss, no fuss - but then you don't have any fun gadgetry to look at once you're inside your little secret room.

    Very cool prawject, unfinished plywood is not my thing thought -- I made a hidden compartment in giant 12 foot long wall unit in the basement, and as time consuming as it was, everything was sanded smooth edge banded(where exposed) and finished with BLO. For a closet, since the plywood looks to be paint grade, I'd stain it or paint it. Leaving it raw, gives it a basement furniture vibe to me.

    The thing about hidden rooms that everyone seems to forget is ventilation. There is NO fresh air coming into that room. There are enough holes in that setup to let some oxygen in but it is going to be stuffy as hell. You need some AC venting in there or 1-2 people will roast each other from their own body heat and the humidity from their breath. You don't even need a full-sized vent, just a small one made out of that foil slinky tubing that people use to connect their dryers to outside air, and a vent tacked onto the end where it comes out of the wall. If your AC installers used that square fiberglass duct board crap, be sure to shut off the AC first and then vacuum out around the hole inside and out. You don't want fiberglass fibers blasting out of your vents.

While at the doctors office as a 12 year old, a magazine I was looking at had a neat setup with a ‘top bunkbed’ with a ladder at the end of the setup and a study room underneath it… fell in love. Ok, ok, did a kid thing and quietly tore the picture out of the magazine and took it home to show my dad. That was a Friday and before the weekend was over I had a similar setup in my small room.. only difference was no door on the study (mom nixed it😛 so I had a bamboo bead curtain.. 70s then😁). You found the servants corridor most likely. As for the room, insufficient data. :-)

      Creepy, prolly a torture room, or maybe used for a little light S&M... Thinking 50 shades... lol... Very curious what this unknown tool looked like... For historical purposes, obv... He he...

    It’s cool, but…… doesn’t everybody knows the secret door now? 😅 Also it looks very fragile, you could build the important parts with metal for security 👮‍♂️

    I heard you mention McMaster Carr in a couple of your videos. I have been on their website many times, while researching parts at my last job. 2.5 yrs of searching specs for washers, bearings, belts, and the like was pretty fun!!
