I am currently 11 years old and I really enjoy this configuration of Windows Server 2012 because, I am a geek at IT and I love using computers for configuration or setting them up and some people say that learning very complex stuff at this age is surprising but later in my like, I'll remember who taught me configuring a server on TH-cam!
I know you made this video in 2013 but, you are really good and I completely understand what you say to me!
I hope you would make more IT videos but anyways, keep it up :)

    Attention!!
I went through many hours furiously trying to figure out why I couldn't get my server connected to my "lab" router. It turned out I had to set the network adapter in Virtualbox to "bridged" and not NAT (which is the default setting). Just thought someone else was struggling with the same issue. ;)

Don't think you need to authorize it. I recently installed a Server 2012 DHCP in our domain at work, and i did not authorize it. It seems like it did that all by itself.

In case anyone have problems authorizing the DHCP server, make sure that your account is part of the domain admins and that your account password is set to meet complexity requirements for when you have to use credentials. To be safe you should specify the account rather than use the first option. Push comes to shove create a new user with the appropriate permissions and authorize from that account. Worked for me. This is if you get the error code 20070.

Great video but something critical that had me scratching my head. Maybe I missed it, but you have to select your DHCP server then click Actions>Authorize. Also note your account needs to be a domain admin to have the option. If you set up in vmware, you will need to login as Administrator and add your account to the domain admin group from the Active Directory Administrative Center.

A work around with having 2 dhcp services running is to have 1 leasing a pool like the dhcp on server and another on the home routers leasing a differnt pool. but all within the same subnet,
for /24 you got .1-.254 addresses in the pool to use
.1 = gateway, .2 = pc, .3-.20 = server dhcp, .21-. 50 = router dhcp, .51-.100 = network and so on. keep it in pools so leases arnt overlapping and you shouldn't have a issue.

First thanks for the outstanding lessons
You are saying that a client computer will use the secondary DNS adress to solve a querry outside the windows domain, but I think it will not use the secondary server because the primary server(the DC) can do the querry of it self, only if is forwarding is configured on the DNS server on the DC for querrys outside the domain then the primary DNS server is used or better the client uses the primary DNSserver and the primary use thesecondary for forwarding

btw, i forgot to mention this is if you have a nat network setup in vmware workstation.
but i'm pretty sure it might be relevant if you're running a nat virtual network environment on an virtualization setup, whether it's vmware, virtualbox, or whatever.
i mean, when you're setting up dhcp, you've got to know where your default gateway is going to be after all right?

I know for a fact, at some point, during setup (in Server 2008 R2), your primary DNS ip can change after a computer restart. It changes to localhost 127.0.0.1. You would need to go to your adapter settings to reconfigure it again. In my case, the VM was attached to Bridged Adapter in VM options (aka Hub), which was connected to my host's (my physical machine) network adapter (wireless), which also was active at the time I wrote this message.

You can connect automatically with your home pc to server with server IP or you can do it with THE one thing "TURN OFF YOUR PC(if you use virtual machines) CONNECTIONS LIKE WIFI OR CABLE" like Eli said in the video and try to connect yourself with from win8 if u will have any trouble type to CMD or PowerShell "ipconfig /release" and then "ipconfig /renew" but first check that u did AUTHORIZE your DHCP server (its in panel). Love your work. It's making it a bit easier for a complete noob like myself understand better. But this episode went beyond me. I don't have enough characters to explain why I have WS2012, but I do, and I'm a pretty quick learner, but are coming from a background with zero familiarity.
I was doing ok, until this class. I don't have a static IP, I'm using a regular dynamic IP (in France). I tried hard coding the 10.1.10.x address you did, but could no longer connect to the internet.

Comcast business gateways do not allow DHCP to be turned off. :( It's going to force me to return their gateway for a modem. Any experience with this? Will a standard docsis3 modem crash with 20 work stations?

+DJDevon3 You can't just have a Docsis 3.0 modem with no router in the picture. So 20 workstations can't run off just a modem, but theoretically just 1 PC could run off of that 1 modem since you only have 1 IP address from your ISP. This is why you introduce a router in the picture (to get all those internal ip addresses and routing capabilities). As long as you have a router, the modem can handle however much traffic, no problem

TheKMZ1 Sorry I was talking about bandwidth because the business gateway is a measly 4-port modem/router combo that you cannot disable DHCP and has horrible admin management. I had to add an unmanaged 16 port switch to it on a subnet. Comcast business class hardware is hardly business class in my opinion. You answered my question at the end. Thank you.

hello from 2019 I've been hearing my whole technical career that were totally gonna be using IPV6 any day now guys since 2012 and look at that almost everyone is still using IPV4, to be honest IPV6 would be nice to work with mostly just because you don't need to work with subnetting.

When I got to 14:33 the naming of the server wasn't like "server.etcg.com"(or in my case "winserver.michael.com").
Instead what was listed was a random IP address unrelated to my server (169.254.103.235).
What is the likely issue here?

goformickey windows has assigned this because it cannot find a DHCP server within the network subnet, the address is called (Automatic Private IP Addressing) in short APIPA

So will this affect the server or do you just ignore it?

its a default ip that happens when the computer gets no assigned IP. you need to setup dhcp to give the computer an IP.
