Eli the computer guy - Man I pray God to keep you alive always as your life is very valuable and productive. You are the only teacher I have come across in my life whose lectures don't 'make me fell asleep and your deliverance is like an academic injection in my blood that very clear and logical . I have developed strong concepts through your lectures . thank you man. I can Talk in IT language with world now and that is because of you ....
win 2012 server is my first attempt at managing a server. specifically i want to focus on AD and Group Policy. you're a wealth of information man, i really appreciate and enjoy your lessons. i've been through many...many, far too many others, your knowledge and ability to teach is fantastic. thank you!

EDIT: To get this to work do the following: - In your virtual box machine settings, make the network adapter for both the server and client PC Bridged. -on the server set the ip stuff as normal, make your dns your servers ip for primary dns and the default gateway address as your secondary dns. -on the client leave the ip stuff dhcp but make the primary DNS your servers IP This should now allow your pc to join the domain! I'm doing everything in virtual box and I get up to 12:35. Thank you very much,it threw me off at first but I got it. Where is the physical connection between the windows server machine and the switch made? Like if you have your lan set up with computers connected to a Cisco switch, how do you connect the switch to the server?
im having trouble in this part can u help me? im using a vmware workstation player and when i do an ipconfig on my client it shows no dns suffix and the ip address is the apipa address. its similar to your problem and i have both of my virtual machines on bridged connection

Question: what happens if I have two or more buildings (like subsidiaries) that need to be made part of the same domain but are not connected to the same network physically ? Say I own a shop on street A and another one on street B and the server is located at street B. PC B no problem - server's right there in the same LAN, but what about PC A ? I imagine if I simply try to set a computer in store A as part of the "domain" I created, it will tell me it can't find it after the step at 16:03....obviously, since it doesn't know where that domain is...what happens there ?
I think the answer to your question could be printed in the right direction when scale is considered. Your problem is two different networks. So if you have a switch in an office and this switch has multiple vlans (one for each department) then what you need is to find a way to get these vlans to communicate with active directory. I've never configured this myself but my guess is that it's a problem that is solved within your network configurations specifically.
It's all going to depend on the software being used to deploy. Common ones are Symantec Ghost, and Acronis suites. There are many different ways to do it, so there isn't a set standard. They all work the same way though you get a client machine set up the way you like it, it gets "imaged" and then cloned out to all your other workstations.
Just to ask a question if you don't mind about 2012. We have never used or should I say used once the DC`s DHCP services. All other times we have used our enterprise routers at our clients for DNS and DHCP. Also we have never used the GUI wizard you show either. We just use the change button below your selection to join a PC or laptop from workgroup to the domain. DNS on the DC is set static with all the including pcs/ laptops already entered. The routers DNS has a pointer back to the DC, including all the IPs in the network which are 90% static as well or DHCP reserved and a very small DHCP scope for visitors "Doctors that come by once a month etc." As long as the first DNS entry in the PC IP settings is set to the DC when we first join a PC to the domain we have never had issues with joining them up. We also do not have to pay lics for IP printers and other non pc/laptop devices like you would if the DC see that IP printer in its DHCP table, if it did then that = an extra device licence automatically even though it's not shared or hosted from the DC itself from what we have seen with 2012. We have been doing it this way for well over 18 years without fail. However since M$ has trashed the normal administration GUI like all Admins are use to that go all the way back to Server 2000. In 2012 administration isn't fluid anymore. Did something change in 2012 that we are not aware of? I ask because windows DHCP services leaves alot to be desired. 1) mainly being if the DC goes down, rebooted, the switch the DC is hosted off of goes offline or flat out goes down that office is screwed. It's bad enough that couldn't get to the DC and all its resources but with so many applications now hosted by either external RDP and or Web apps, the fact the network would be depending on the DC for DHCP and DNS resolution means that even users can't get online. I say this because we all know the first thing a user is going to do is reboot their PC , which in a case like this on reboot they would lose their DHCP assigned IP. In our cases the doctors offices or hospitals that are connected via branch to branch VPN are totally screwed. Please don't take this as a bashing as I'm honestly asking if something has changed between win 2000,2003,2008, and now 2012. Thanks !!!
Eli the Computer Guy , I know it’s three years later but, I am building a 2019 data center lab and your videos are the most explained and well put out about all the modules and different Servers. Keep up the good work, ignore the expert and think about us that really need a teacher like you. I will be sure to leave a donation
Using DHCP on VM was not easy to set up may be worth to show the steps to config the VM network setting. Had to watch other vids to config the VM network adapter to work. Great lesson. Thanks
Maybe this is a fun analogy. The Domain Controller is the King in control of his Domain. He tells everyone what they can and can't do. I had trouble for awhile understanding exactly the purpose/function/advantage of a domain.
Guys using VMware Workstation 12. Set both the Server Vm and the Client VM network adapter to Lan segment instead of any adapter as they will connect via the virtual LAN environment.
In case anyone is in the same boat: I had both a DCHP and DNS server already set up, and I did not want to migrate all of that data. As a result I removed DCHP from my AD controller and then added a DNS forward (pointed to the AD controller's DNS server) to my existing DNS server. It worked like a charm.
I just discovered your videos and let me say, very nice dude! Very very informative. I've been looking to learn all about server 2012 and AD! I installed everything and you are helping me out a lot. Hoping to land a job soon!
Excellent video, but I really wish you wouldn't have skipped over DHCP scope configuration. I was able to get a test client joined to the domain but i did run into network issues until i configured a DHCP scope...I believe in this video you just covered installing the role.
Search or ask your ISP for the default router creds. Then look in the lan settings. Every router has its own interface, so you will need to ask your ISP helpdesk, look through every menu or search online for a guide. Also it is possible that some "routers" do not support disabling the dhcp service cause it is too cheap for advanced configurations.
What about how it was in the windows xp pro login screen? Where you had the choice of signing into the computer locally or through the domain? Then anyone who had a user account on the domain could sign in, and it wouldn't be restricted to users who were associated with that machine?
I was wondering, what is the difference between adding the computer to the domain via network ID wizard like you did and hitting the change button below the Network ID wizard button, If we have allready created our user in AD upfront.
Hey Eli, quick ques.... when you mention disconnecting DHCP to obtain an address from the Server 2012 internal network of reserved IPs.... do you need to disconnect the DSL modem when using Server in a Virtual environment like Virtual-Box
Thanks for the respond. Essentially what you are saying, the client pc get its DHCP from domain controller pc, and manually add DNS ip from Domain Controller pc to the Client ip address?
I suppose it is because of the school nature, I prefer to see someone when they are teaching. I notice you gesture very well whilst you explain things as well (probably without realizing it) so it means whilst your talking through something you are pointing at it. I feel I know where I am :)
Hi Eli, Thanks for this video. Just a quick question, does it mean that to add a client to a domain you will need to go to each client computer to add them to a domin right?
So im not available to disable DHCP because my internet packet does not support that, so that means that i cant have static IP address? By the way i also have error on 16:00 , active directory domain controller for the domain could not be contacted this operation returned because the timeout period expired... Any one can help please???
I'm still in my learning stages ,but why should we go through the 'Network ID wizard' in the system properties page and go through a lot of wizard pages (like shown in this video) in order to join a pc to a domain. I mean isn't easy by just clicking on 'Change' in the system properties page and then add the pc to a domain (only just two clicks required) .How different are both ways from each other?
Hello, just want to make a quick post on adding client machines to your respective domain-whether live or business/enterprise environments. Like some of you, I was experiencing DNS issues to where some machines would not be able to contact the DC. I just happen to come across a video to where a guy suggested to switch off IPv6 and then follow up with joining the domain. Just like that, it worked-I have been racking my brain on this all week. Also, for you that have routers that provide IPv6 DNS Settings manually, be sure to switch that to "Auto" this will enable your DC to provide the DNS settings, not the router. Wooohhooo! Hope this helps someone.
Hi Eli, Thank you for this video. I appreciate it that you take the time to explain computer fundamentals in laymen terms. You cut through all the B.S. to help newbies like myself to understand something that felt like it was over my hear.
Great Videos. Thank you very much. Quick question. I want to add a network printer to the server and assign it to a certain Group to be used only by the Users in that Group. Do you have a video for that? Thank you very much.
hi eli, thank you very much for yours lessons, for me was a light in the dark, thank you, i have a question if can help me, i want use one network card to take the internet and other to send this signal to all pcs, i must use nic?or bridge connection? what you can tell me? thanks again!!
Eli, you're awesome! One question... If you're running a server and clients inside VirtualBox, and you turn off DHCP at the router, how does the host machine upon which all this is running get it's IP address? Is it getting it from the virtual DHCP server that's running inside it? Is that even possible? I've been running the exact same set up but DHCP is not turned off at the router and I have not noticed any probs... yet.
Someone please help! When I am adding my client machine to the domain the following error is shown: "An active directory domain controller for the domain could not be contacted" Any ideas anyone? I can see a few people are also see this issue when browsing the internet, I have gone into the Advanced TCP/IP settings and the DNS info onto the client machine however I am still presented with the same error.
Did you resolve the issue ? I am getting the same error. I have posted a question with my issue in detail on the serverfault website. Could you please check and help me with it. serverfault.com/questions/799368/vmware-workstation-adding-a-windows-7-enterprise-virtual-machine-to-a-windows-s
Hi Raunag, How are you? I will try and help you for sure, I have managed to solve the issue I was having however I am using Oracle VM Virtual Box and not vmware. The issue I was having was coming from the configuration in the back of the VM software, I had the network settings set up wrong attached to NAT and not an internal network. The following link may help you: kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2043160 The above link is just information on how to create a iso network between two VM such as the client and server, just give this a read and see what you think, have a look at the network settings within VMware it's self to see if you can see any settings to change the network to Internal network I defiantly think the above link will help you. If you still get the same issue download Oracle VM VirtualBox then let me know and I will help you with the config, if you wish you can add me on skype for instant message: kierenj1703 :) Kind Regards, Kieren
I am a bit confused on the part part where Eli said to disable DHCP service. Which DHCP service is he talking about? Disable IPS router DHCP or Sev2012 router DHCP? I have tried both I still can not get "connection-specific DNS Suffix: ETCG.COM" and therefore I can not join. AD DC for the domain "....." could not be contacted.
I know it's too late to respond but maybe someone will have the same question. Eli meant to disable your router DHCP, so you will have only Server's one. Because if you will have two DHCP servers in one network, you can have a lot of problems. In fact, it depends on your virtualization environment. I assume Eli worked with bridged network interfaces, in this scenario all VMs are at the same network with physical computers, hence Server DHCP and Router DHCP will make a mess. But if we use NAT interfaces on our VM's, we don't need to disable router's DHCP anymore, because it will not affect our VM's machines since our physical(router DHCP) and virtual(Server DHCP) worlds will be on the different subnets. I hope it does make sense, and also hope that after 3 years you already found a good job and this knowledge is easy for you :)
Hi Vinil. It depends what server are you talking about, physical or virtual one? With NAT, virtual machines(including server) CAN'T interact with each other, they can communicate only with physical network. So lets say if you have VM(1) that has NAT NIC, and vServer that has also NAT NIC, they will not be able to communicate with each other, they can do it only with their host, even if their host is the same. For letting them communicate you should change NAT to NAT Network, or Host-only/ Bridged Networks. If you mean physical server, it's odd. Cuz with NAT, VM's can speak with physical devices through host. But you should know that they will not have the same subnet, NAT works like proxy server. VM's will have lets say 10.0.0.0 subnet, and your physical network will have 192.168.0.0 subnet. So your VM(10.0.0.1) will interact with physical server (192.168.0.2) through host (192.168.0.1). You can't put VM and physical network in the same subnet using NAT. I hope it makes sense.
So the configurations are all done on the client side looks like. Assuming the domain controller is all setup on the server side. Otherwise, looks fairly straightforward.
Eli, I thought I had been following your steps exactly but I must have messed up somewhere along the way.. I have DNS and DHCP up and running (as far as i know) but I've run into a problem... All of my wireless connections seem to be working just fine and can access the internet, however my wired connections can not. Thanks for any advice!
So, what if the enable/disable tickbox is greyed out and you cannot uncheck enable DHCP when you log into the router interface? How do you force the client station running windows 8 to use the dns servers/gateway? I manually inputed them by unchecking obtain automatically, but nothing.
Okay. Thank you Eli. But if i am adding computer to the domain in a licensed server env.( W2k12 essentials) , do i need to install the CAL for each client computer am adding to the domain. If yes, how do i do this ????. Well done Eli
Hi, can you tell me how to get my virtual machines (on vmware and/or virtualbox) to communicate with my virtual Windows 2012 server? I was told I needed to turn off DHCP on my router (I did this) in order the client to pick up an IP address from the DHCP server. My client machine has Windows 7 Professional. Thanks for your help.
Eli, you said that the Home Basic versions cannot be added to a domain. I was surprised because I could add a Windows 7 Home Basic to a Windows 2012 Server Essentials domain. Did anything change since you've published this video? Or it depends on the 2012 Server version as well ? By the way, very good tutorial. Thanks!
Eli did you put DNS ip address on your windows 8 machine before you connected to the domain? because when I do it, it gives me an error and so I have to add DNS ip in windows before I can I add to my 2012 domain?
Hey Eli.. Loved the video.. I had a question. We can add computers and users to the domain but i tried adding user (not the computer) to the domain and everything worked fine. What is the real need of adding computers to the domain. what is it that we cannot achieve by just adding users
Hello Eli, I'm following your videos and I'm learning a lot. I have a critical question for you though. If I'm replacing an old 2003 server completely with a 2012 server from scratch (no migration, a fresh server) will i have to do anything extra to add already existing computers to the new 2012 server domain that were on the old 2003 server? If anyone knows it'd be much appreciated !
if youre having trouble connecting the domain make sure to go back to the server and see remaining notifications in server manager, you most likely missed one step.
Thanks for your kind support. There are no pending notification in server manager. I have created a new user and given the delegate permissions "join to domain and computer objects etc"... but no use. still getting the same error " The following error occurring attempting to join domain. Unknown username or bad password"... Kindly suggest me next step.
Hello. Thx for video. Can you explain how GPO right add workstation to domain is connected to ms-ds-machineaccountquota. If i set it to zero than the gpo became useless?
I love your thorough lessons and your enthusiasm. Just wish you did stuff like oracle/ldap/etc stuff that we see in the real world. Windows server stuff isn't really that tough it would be nice to get your enthusiasm on some more advanced topics!! Thx for the vids mang.
I have an issue - my client PC can't find the DNS suffix. I created a static IP address on the client, DHCP on my server and disabled DHCP on my router.
I ipconfig on user pc and getting "Connection-Suffic= localdomain", and not getting from lab.com. Im running a user pc on VMware. I thought I already disabled DHCP on my lab router. Why I am not getting DHCP (DNS?) from my server "lab.com"? Any suggestions?
Do you need to have VM Workstation Pro in order to join a VM client to a VM domain controller? I have 2 VMs on VM Workstation Player, the Client's DNS is pointing at the domain controller, but the client still can't find the domain.
I'm having this "An active directory domain controller for the domain could not be contacted" problem all the time...I'm using wifi and also virtual box to connect clients to their domain...What am I doing wrong???Does the client pc have to get ip address from server's dhcp or manually configure the ip add??? also does the dns ip add in both client pc and server have to be same? do we have to configure dns ip add manually???
Great vid! Can you help me with a couple of questions? What would be the difference between using a real domain (xxxx.com) and using a local domain (xxxx.local)? And if I use a real one do I need direct association with the public IP for using VPN?

Long life to you .!!!
really appreciate all your courses. Many Thanks
i have see 3 videos of you about AD,DHSP,DNS and on all of your videos you was very good and you explain it very good and clear! Good work keep it up!

You make awesome tutorials ...u r far better than my MCSA trainer
Thanks !!!
Curious... Most people feel the other way around...
Thanks
not working for me
my dhcp from local router is down,, but i cannot pull a new ip from the server... i dont know what to do,,,pls help
Maybe this is a fun analogy. The Domain Controller is the King in control of his Domain. He tells everyone what they can and can't do. I had trouble for awhile understanding exactly the purpose/function/advantage of a domain.
You are really a great guy Eli. Please keep doing this. Good job man
Guys using VMware Workstation 12. Set both the Server Vm and the Client VM network adapter to Lan segment instead of any adapter as they will connect via the virtual LAN environment.
In case anyone is in the same boat:
I had both a DCHP and DNS server already set up, and I did not want to migrate all of that data.
Same for me
Search or ask your ISP for the default router creds. Then look in the lan settings. Every router has its own interface, so you will need to ask your ISP helpdesk, look through every menu or search online for a guide. Also it is possible that some "routers" do not support disabling the dhcp service cause it is too cheap for advanced configurations.
THANK YOU!! I was struggling with adding this computer to a domain for school and your video helped so much!!
What about how it was in the windows xp pro login screen? Where you had the choice of signing into the computer locally or through the domain? Then anyone who had a user account on the domain could sign in, and it wouldn't be restricted to users who were associated with that machine?
thank you from zaragoza, spain, great videos...!!!
16:03 - "An active directory domain controller for the domain could not be contacted"
I have the same problem. Did you ever got the answer for this problem?
Make sure you add the correct DNS ip manually in your client machine and you acquire a correct dhcp ip and netmask from the domain server.
Thanks for the respond. Essentially what you are saying, the client pc get its DHCP from domain controller pc, and manually add DNS ip from Domain Controller pc to the Client ip address?
Alex Kok
Yes, You are right.
How do you add the correct DNS ip manually?
What is the difference between adding a computer to a domain, and adding a user to a domain? Do you always do both? Or when to use one or the other?
Eli the Computer Guy wich network configuration are you using on virtualbox? NAT, Bridge with only Server DHCP on or Host only configuration?
I suppose it is because of the school nature, I prefer to see someone when they are teaching. I notice you gesture very well whilst you explain things as well (probably without realizing it) so it means whilst your talking through something you are pointing at it. I feel I know where I am :)
Hi Eli, Thanks for this video. Just a quick question, does it mean that to add a client to a domain you will need to go to each client computer to add them to a domin right?
My exact question as well.
I mean isn't easy by just clicking on 'Change' in the system properties page and then add the pc to a domain (only just two clicks required) .How different are both ways from each other?
this way probably doesn't add PC to AD I guess
The wizard enables us to configure things like account name, user type
Hi Eli,
Thank you for this video. I appreciate it that you take the time to explain computer fundamentals in laymen terms. You cut through all the B.S. to help newbies like myself to understand something that felt like it was over my hear.
Quick Question. Is there or are you gonna make a video for a client computer to connect through Remote ?
Great Videos. Thank you very much. Quick question. I want to add a network printer to the server and assign it to a certain Group to be used only by the Users in that Group. Do you have a video for that? Thank you very much.
hi eli, thank you very much for yours lessons, for me was a light in the dark, thank you, i have a question if can help me, i want use one network card to take the internet and other to send this signal to all pcs, i must use nic?or bridge connection? what you can tell me? thanks again!!
which video of yours should i learn first step by step?
I believe that you had the Network settings internal Network adapter on both client and the server.Perfect ....it worked great for me
Eli, you're awesome!
Make sure the client's DNS is looking at the domain controller. Ex. the DNS should look at the IP of the server
Did you resolve the issue ? I am getting the same error. I have posted a question with my issue in detail on the serverfault website. Could you please check and help me with it.

Hi Raunag,
How are you? I will try and help you for sure, I have managed to solve the issue I was having however I am using Oracle VM Virtual Box and not vmware. The issue I was having was coming from the configuration in the back of the VM software, I had the network settings set up wrong attached to NAT and not an internal network.
The following link may help you: kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2043160
The above link is just information on how to create a iso network between two VM such as the client and server, just give this a read and see what you think, have a look at the network settings within VMware it's self to see if you can see any settings to change the network to Internal network I defiantly think the above link will help you.
If you still get the same issue download Oracle VM VirtualBox then let me know and I will help you with the config, if you wish you can add me on skype for instant message: kierenj1703 :)
Kind Regards,
Kieren
I have really enjoy the class and have installed an active directory on my machine
Hey, I cannot get my server and client VMs on the same subnet using NAT
Hello, thankyou very much for this explanation. It helped me a lot.
Hi Edwin, you are welcome.
Do I need a CAL for every computer in the domain. Im only using the server for active directory and file sharing
So the configurations are all done on the client side looks like.
Assuming the domain controller is all setup on the server side.
Otherwise, looks fairly straightforward.
You are just such a blessing Eli God bless
Eli,
I thought I had been following your steps exactly but I must have messed up somewhere along the way.. I have DNS and DHCP up and running (as far as i know) but I've run into a problem... All of my wireless connections seem to be working just fine and can access the internet, however my wired connections can not.
Thanks for any advice!
Thank you. Eli, you dont have idea how you are helping me. Thanks again.
Thanks!
Hello, would you mind showing the Network topology on GNS3 and router config? Thanks.
I am doing all these on my Imac using VMWare 11. The problem is that my lab version of windows 10 don't see the lab version of windows server 2016
What about Win7 Pro? I am having problems joining Win7 Pro computers to the network....
the style of introduction is awesum i am eli the computer guy :D
Your videos are great!! Keep 'em coming.
I really like the way you explain things, are very clear and easy to understand.
If anyone knows it'd be much appreciated !
very good video
you are incredible
my teacher can't explain me like you
if youre having trouble connecting the domain make sure to go back to the server and see remaining notifications in server manager, you most likely missed one step.
Thanks for your kind support.
There are no pending notification in server manager. I have created a new user and given the delegate permissions "join to domain and computer objects etc"... but no use. still getting the same error " The following error occurring attempting to join domain. Unknown username or bad password"... Kindly suggest me next step.
+ASHU sorry but I just posted this incase someone else was having the same problem, I'm still new to servers, try forums maybe ?
what happens if your are not using virtualbox. Instead you are using hyper V on server manager? (e.g) my DNS Suffix says 'home'
How can i fix this?
Can I keep DHCP enabled if I assign static IP's? Stupid optimum router blocks the settings to change DHCP.
hi is this the video that comes after the " create a domain controller"?
At the end of this "Course" with 22 videos, are we considered to be able to pass MCSA exam?
I doubt that since the exam goes further into details-
I get error network path was not found while joining to domain. Any idea?
I have an issue - my client PC can't find the DNS suffix. I created a static IP address on the client, DHCP on my server and disabled DHCP on my router.
Hi can i do that behalf on using Remote desktop?? I mean this type of adding no need cables?
how would one connect externally to the domain through remote desktop?
Hi Eli, many thanks for the response, I now know that I have to enable virtualisation from the bios.
Really good and professional teacher
Do you need to have VM Workstation Pro in order to join a VM client to a VM domain controller? I have 2 VMs on VM Workstation Player, the Client's DNS is pointing at the domain controller, but the client still can't find the domain.
Eli....how do you turn off DHCP on the ISP router that you mentioned in your "adding a computer to a 2012 server" video?
I dont get this, how did he get his virtual machine on the domain before adding the machine in? I turned off dhcp on my router but it didnt work?
It was the DHCP Server assigning IP to this computer, that is why the name was appearing.
