  • This exciting episode has a guest fabricator: Mark Gentile from Proper Fabrications. It was great to have Mark come by Vibrant Head Office and give some insight on some of the tips and tricks he has to offer with his 20 years of fabrication on automotive exhaust and automotive metal fabrication. In this episode, he builds a completely Aluminum exhaust system using some NOS Vibrant Performance Aluminum Mufflers that have long been discontinued. Should we bring these back? Let us know in the comments!
    Catch the next episode early next week, where we will have Kashus show you how to build and assemble PTFE Lines and which Fittings are the right ones for the application.

    X pipe would sound awesome. On another note, never ever use rags on a bandsaw. Ever. That's the most perfect way I've ever seen to lose some fingers. You're watching your cut, not the rag. The rag is moving with the work piece (towards the blade). When the blade grabs the rag, and it will, it's gonna take both your thumbs with it. Go get some ABS plastic cut in 2 and fasten it to your table and leave it there for whatever you're cutting. Sounds pretty good, good looking welds too, but expect your floorboards to be flaming hot due to heat transfer from the aluminum.

      I saw what you're saying about the rags that could've ended badly for him really quick and if I were him instead of using rags why not sit the piece of metal that you are cutting on a piece of 2x4 long enough your fingers are away from the blade safely and just have the saw cut the metal and the wood at the same time unless the blade is strictly for metal or strictly for wood then that's the only way that won't work but if it's a universal blade you would be able to do that

    • @cyan1518
      @cyan1518 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@keefespencer1173 aluminum is soft enough that wood blades on most cutting tools can be used on it, usually works better than metal blades because they get galled up by the aluminum often.

      You should put some nitrous on the car and get it into the 9s but low 10s for an N/A stick shift car is pretty damn good especially for it to be full weight and everything and I think you should go to @Old Man's Garage on TH-cam and call out his Malibu he has a 79 Malibu with a 421cid nitrous SBC in it and his is also a daily driver and it is full weight full interior and has heat and A/C and he drives it on a daily as well and I think it would be a good race between the two of you except he likes racing in the 8th mile

    I would say this sounds pretty good, and has some good practical benefits but have noticed for a long time that any longer Titanium, Aluminium exhausts, basically anything not on a bike or something with a layout like a Dune Buggy can run into big issues with rasp if that is a deal breaker. Can be mitigated with supports or added resonators, most of that sort of rasp comes from the literal pipe itself vibrating around a bit causing a knock on effect you hear all the way through the pipe (other more static cause would be if merge at headers is harsh, not very high quality, BMW syndrome.) High quality Stainless is heavier but consistently the cleanest sounding in this regard, feel free to look up identical engines with similar or practically same exhaust setup with normal Steel and Stainless if you don't believe me.

    I did a full aluminum exhaust in my pickup. 2001 4.0 ranger tuned up on nitrous. Not bashing on the work as this is a really nice job, however this setup is going to be very short lived. Every single joint is a butt joint putting all the stress on the welds and 1,000% I would never use 5356 filler in a high heat cycle application. Every single time I've used it with or without post weld heat treating, the welds fail. It gets very brittle at temp and in this situation. 4043 and 4943 are far better choices. Aluminum is a bit tricky in a heat application due to the tendencies to crack at temperature.
    @Vibrant Performance TV
    I've used your guys stuff personally and it's all good stuff. I would highly highly suggest you guys use slip joints in this application to fix the welds failing. Especially with the mufflers/resonators, those should be slip joints regardless of the base metal.
    Good work regardless just personally kinda sucks to have comebacks on stuff like this and have to fix it down the road. Been there done that not fun. Lol keep it up guys, nice looking car and a really nice exhaust!

  • @tracytalbott9259
    @tracytalbott9259 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There is a reason nobody uses aluminum for exhaust but alot of radiators use aluminum. Heat transfer, and the floor board will get very hot and in the summer time well the cab of your vehicle south of Canada will get hot very hot, hope your ac if you have one work very good cause your going to need it! Why do they coat headers and exhaust pipe with ceramic, I guess to keep heat in to cut down on heat transfer under hood and close to floor boards?

    • @P71ScrewHead
      @P71ScrewHead ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rust is the reason why stainless steel is the go to metal for exhausts.. He may have went with "aluminium" to save weight..lol i would just turn the exhaust after the front tires, in my state it's ok for an old car.. God bless TX..

    • @VibrantPerformanceTV
      @VibrantPerformanceTV  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Aluminum does not retain heat like stainless does. These exhausts are located underneath the vehicle, and there is a LOT of air flow there. You will notice our line of heat protective shielding is made from aluminum, that is because it blocks the heat from entering, but also if you expose a section of the aluminum heat shield (also the reason why heat shields hang so low on vehicles) to an open airway (such as underneath the car) then all the heat that absorbs from the exhaust tubing will transfer out the exposed area.
      This car does not have AC and it is not a daily driver. This is a street/strip car.

      @@P71ScrewHead I'm an old guy, been doing hot rod stuff for awhile and if you drive it on the street you going to hit red lights and traffic jams 🎸, if it's a track car straight headers no need for exhaust pipe weights to much your at the track right. Nascar uses aluminum exhaust pipe and other metals to. It gets so hot inside those cars that the driver loses more water or fluids than any other athlete or any athlete if you don't consider them athletes in one race. It gets really hot inside those cars and they have close to two hundred miles per hour of air flow. I'm just trying to give car guys a heads up on the cons of aluminum exhaust parts. Now if I'm on the street I might run into a red light or two and a traffic jam on a hot day in Texas or California or well you should get my point. Look I've been car crafting for years I'm an old guy. A track car doesn't use exhaust pipe at the strip, weight to much. Open headers or header mufflers if required. You must have been told that because assumption was that thin wall aluminum is weak for exhaust, which it is. If you are using a Stainless muffler with aluminum, then you will also run into issues. Keep in mind a lot of promods use Aluminum on their downpipes in turbo cars (as seen in the Mustang at our PRI booth, video is on our channel showcasing the vehicle)
