He reminds me of the Giggling Green Ghost from the old Scooby Doo cartoon without the giggling part. Of course, his green outfit is reminiscent of the Spectre, but there is definitely enough potential for him to be great.
Frank Robbins era is in general forgotten, you should do an episode on him. He wrote for 5 years, illustrated for much of that too, in the late 1960s/early '70s doing a lot of the work to mature Batman and introduce gothic themes that people attribute to Denny O'Neill and Neal Addams.
Spook has a lot of potential to be one of Batman's best villains. Maybe he could work alongside the Scarecrow as a sidekick or partner. Anyway great work Gotham Rouges!
I'm surprised that he's never shown up in the Suicide Squad. I feel like his abilities as an escape artist/civil engineer would come in really handy in breaking into/out of a highly secure area. They could even use the second version of him, the one who believes that he is a ghost for some interesting dialogue with Deadshot and the other squad members. I reckon he'd fit in really well.
One of Gotham's finer forgotten rogues. I share the same thoughts but I do enjoy him a lot more than you do :) !!!! At the time he was unique and rather interesting, I used to love reading his comics (my dad owned 3 of them) and he did "spook" me pretty good. However, I was a little child, so of course!!! Anyway, enough rambling. He was a character with a lot of potential which is why I believethey tried to force him (it) on us. I wouldn't mind a cameo either at this point but it does seem very unlikely. I have nothing else to add! You have covered it like always. Stay awesome my dude!!!
Spook is actually one of the characters that I specifically created this series for. Him, Clayface 3 and the Signalman were the ones I originally had in mind. I actually started my Batman comic reading with old bronze age stuff, so those rogues have a special meaning to me.
Spook really has the right stuff to become a B-List Bat Rogue on the same level as Ventriloquist or Firefly. He's a master escape artist and illusionist that can make people believe he's a real ghost. Who's to say that Spook only made people believe that Damian decapitated him? He faked his death in the electric chair so why not his assassination too?
Spook should still be an element of Batman and a major player who stays behind the scenes almost entirely - simply to explain how the Joker keeps getting out of Arkham!
What a cool character. I wonder why he disappeared. Here’s how I would rework him, as sort of a mixture of both Spooks. Val Kalivan was an building designer, and he was responsible for redesigning Arkham Asylum after it was to be reopened when the first supervillains appeared. He put in secret escape tunnels to pay off debts to the Falcone crime family. Eventually, Falcone ordered his death, and he was injured in a gas explosion. He survived, but he thought he was an actual ghost, and set out for revenge. This way we could explain how there are so many breakouts at Arkham, and Kalivan would actually be insane. His design is kind of cool, so I’d keep that the same. He is a cool concept, and I feel something like this would make him great.
Great video! The Spook does have great potential, and who knows the one Damian killed may not have been the original (just like before when he faked his execution). Also I wanted to add that the Phantasm from TAS could be partially inspired by the Spook, as they both look ghostly and use smoke to disguise themselves.
I think he vanished because the environment he was created for no longer existed. There was no longer a need for a character who just SEEMED supernatural. Due to loosened comic codes, you could now show supernatural monsters in comics with no strings attached.
I like this character like he's sort of cool don't rlly like his name but I do like the concept of him thinking he's dead and him not rlly being s ghost And joking his death all the time to deceive ppl.
How about the Black Queen? She was a one-shot villainous character who was working for the Joker before betraying him to assist the Batman, and as a result died in the flames of the building she was trapped in.
Wow I've never heard of her.. What issue does she appear in? Though I've decided to not include one shot villains, they've gotta have atleast 2 appearances to count as a 'proper rogue'. However once I start running out of those I may have to resort to the one shots, who knows.. :P
She is in Batman (1940) #5. Two other guys are there as well, but they are not that interesting so they don't matter. Also I was curious if you would cover the Ethan Bennett Clayface from The Batman. I always liked him and wished that he had been as big a hit as Harley was from The Animated Series.
Hmm I may actually have read that one..I have it in one of my "Batman Chronicles" trades atleast. Don't know, I'm not the biggest fan of The Batman, though I may do something on that show in the future.
And what's up with Joker and Penguin being martial artists? A series where I spotlight all the rogues from that show and talk about how well (or badly) they were adapted might be fun, considering they were all sooo different. Don't know if that would get any views though..
I know it has been mentioned before but please do an episode on forgotten Batman villain The Black Spider! I have really enjoyed all of your episodes for the channel.
Bring him back but make him supernatural. He gets people out of Prison still with his supernatural abilities, but is always trying to extract some kind of dire, spiritual payment out of the inmates instead of money. He could actually be the reason why many of Batman's rogues consistently escape. Ghost-proofing the Asylum/Prison could be a recurring theme.
I think itd be cool if he went through an accident when he was betrayed. Leading him to become smoke-like and gain the power of intangibility. This would definetly give reason to him believing he was a ghost. But i'm no 10/10 writer. Its just a thought i had after seeing the imagery.
I would say that a lot of Batman's rogues are master escape artists, just not so as their gimmick. Have you seen how often they break out of incarceration? My first time ever seeing the spook actually was in the Grant Morrison story where he gets killed and I've been interested in learning more about him ever since. I had no clue he was such a big player at one point. The more you know I guess. Maybe since the original was killed we could get the special forces version as a recurring version? That version seemed pretty Interesting for a copycat act and I liked how it was a double entendre on the name. What do you think and would you welcome this?
Well now, Arkham Asylum has revolving doors, remember? Haha ;) I prefer the classic original Spook, but yeah sure I 'd rather have the newer agent version than none at all. I doubt we're ever gonna see that take again though, as that story seems to be completely forgotten.
The classic Spook, done right, could become essentially Batman's Mysterio. What I mean there is that in a proper story, there might be so many tricks and illusions being employed that you don't even realize it is the Spook at work until the very end. The CIA version of the Spook I can't see having that same sort of versatility, he'd be more about booby traps and espionage, kind of like a villainous Jason Bourne.
Been going through your channel for the past few days and i gotta say its great to see someone with such a similar interest make such quality videos. My personal favourite obscure Bat-Villains being KGBeast, Mime and Magpie (The original, beware was ok but really a different character). So far there's really only a few trivial things i disagree with you on, and its real hard to think of anything quality you wouldn't have heard of, NKVDemon? Colonel Blimp? Black Spider II? Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoy my channel! I talked about the Mime in my Top 5 One Shot villains (yeah I know she's had a couple of tiny cameos too) and I am definately planning to cover Magpie. Black Spider, now there's an idea. I could just lump in both of them in one video. Blimp could be fun too, I actually havent read his stories. Thanks for the suggestions!
Yeah that was literally the next video i watched after Spook funnily enough, good stuff.Very excited to see your cover of Magpie now, you see she just got announced for the Batman/Shadow crossover? There's technically four Black Spider's honestly, although only the first two have any good stories, the Alan Grant one is fantastic assuming you haven't read it, though you probably have. As for Blimp, he only really shown up twice once around the same time the Mad Monk made his come back in the 70's in a remake of the golden age story in batman #4 about not Napoleon and his blimp. He showed up a second time in a (great) cameo in the first arc of rebirth batman
The 1970s were a nightmare era in the US-we couldn't be faster to be rid of the decade since the only memorable thing about it was the pornography. Poor Spook, who had an interesting schtick at least, suffered for it
I assume it's because "spook" has also been used as a racial slur against dark-skinned people. Renaming the spook isn't the best option either since "wraith" and "spectre" are already established DC characters.
@@coolguy2563 You're probably much too young to really comprehend the negative connotation of the word in regard to race. It was largely in vogue (if that's the word?) in the 40's, 50's, and 60's.

Spook is the comic book equivalent of Disco! Big in the seventies, then seemingly vanished when the decade ended, becoming a has-been fad.

I'm not sure that's the case
it actually might be that ...spook was a derogatory term used towards african americans
and i know it was what ghosts were called as well
