  • Beautiful Finland's seaside from a German documentary about the Baltic coasts and a rendition of the story about the origin of iron from Kalevala.
Veera Voima is a Finnish folk singer who specializes in rune singing. Her project "Myths of Making" is based on the birth myths of Kalevala. This is a short version of her song "Raudan Synty" (The Origin of Iron): I've taken most of the instrumental part out because I just wanted to listen to the calm singer's voice, you can hear the full song at the singer's official web page: www.veeravoima.net/page1.htm
Thanks to the Old Man Moon for translating it for me XD
    TRANSLATION OF THE LYRICS:
Yes I know the birth of iron
I understand the origin of steel
Water is the oldest of brothers
Iron is the youngest of brothers
Here with us the nights come alone
    Alone the dawn comes
Alone is born the Maiden of Death
Maiden of Death the Mother of Earth
    Alone is born, alone grows
    Alone is born, alone grows
    At the vast open marshes
    swinging in quagmire pendulum
Laid asleep in grass so good
    Earth's girl low maiden
Laid asleep in grass so good
on top of a beautiful heath
    forgot her bosom open
    forgot her bosom open
and spilled to the ground her milk
    thus trickled the white liquid
    From bosom so ample
    From nipples of the maiden
Where she exuded the black milk
there was the origin of soft iron
Where she oozed the white milk
there was the origin of steel
Where she seeped the red milk
there was the origin pig iron
    Wolf ran along the marshes
    The bear roamed the isthmus
The marshes rose beneath the wolf
The isthmus at the paws of the bear
    There arose the iron
    There grew the steel
at the footsteps of the wolf
by the paws of a bear
    Will not born iron
    without fiery fire
    and will not become tough
    without immersing into water
Water is the oldest of brothers
Iron is the youngest of brothers
    LYRICS:
    kyllä tieän rauan synnyn
    arvoan alun teräksen
    se on vanhin veljeksiä
    rauta nuorin veljeksiä
    yksin meillä yöt tulevat
    yksin päivät valkiavat
    yksin syntyy tuonen tyttö
    tuonen tyttö maan emonen
    yksin syntyy yksin kasvaa
    yksin syntyy yksin kasvaa
    suon avoilla maan navoilla
    heilurilla hettehellä
    nukkuipa nurmelle hyvälle
    maan tyttö matala neiti
    nukkuipa nurmelle hyvälle
    ja kanervalle kaunihille
    auki rintansa unohti
    auki rintansa unohti
    ja lypsi maahan maitoansa
    niin valutti valkiaista
    utareista uhkuvista
    nänneistä nimettömistä
    Se kun lypsi mustan maion
    siitä saatiin melto rauta
    ja kun valkein valutti
    siitä tehtihin teräkset
    sekun puikutti punasen
    siitä saatiin räkyrauta
    susi juoksi suota myöten
    karhu kannasta samosi
    suo nousi suen jälessä
    kannas karhun kämmenille
    siihen nousi rauta ruoste
    ja kasvoi teräs karanko
    suen sorkkien sijoille
    karhun kämmenen perille
    eipä synny rauta raukka
    ilman tuimakkaa tuletta
    eikä kasva karkiaksi
    ilman veessä kastamatta
    vesi on vanhin veljeksiä
    rauta nuorin veljeksiä

Thank you for uploading, I am thankful for my whole heart. Thank you for giving us an English translation. Stay well, you are a meaningful and beautiful human being.
For anyone of you that have not visited Finland, please come, but take a tent and own car and leave Helsinki. Do not go for major attractions like Levi, Helsinki, Turku. They are great places to visit but spend just a few days each. Don't believe that you have seen Finland if you stop by with a cruise where you spend a few days and go see TOP10 Helsinki stuff, like a lot of people do.
The country is about forests, swamps, lakes, and every beings connection to them. You will have hard time finding people who will not know woods, enjoy a fire on a cold night under stars. Finnish people have lived on the lands since the last ice age, and you can tell from us.
Please visit us, we would love to have you enjoy the beauty of our land while it's still there!
    BR,
    Finn living outside home.

Eesti regilaul (mis ju teoreetiliselt ongi sama asi, mis ruunilaul) on nii sarnane. Finnish and Estonian rune songs are so similar! I feel like I've heard one that is almost identical to this one in Estonian. Beautiful!

Understood the first part perfectly, Finnish and Estonian really are similar, I was in Tallin some years ago and found myself understanding the language fairly well, it's not like I've ever even studied the language.

+Silent Killer I guess, originally it must have been both: a sung prayer meant to put one into a trance-like meditative mood with its repetitive intonation.

    • @MacahMacah
      @MacahMacah 8 ปีที่แล้ว +26

+Ebne Al An interesting note about the relation between "praying" and Finnish folk poems: it was a common belief of ancient Finns that if you knew the origin of something you had power over it. So many of the poems that describe the birth or creation of something were sung when an affliction related to them had to be diverted. The birth of iron poem which is sung in this video was sung when someone had been cut or otherwise injured by iron or steel instruments.

+McAnkkuli thanks....though i am having problem to pronouncing the words correctly anyway i can't stop humming it...such a comfortable piece....BTW it seems like iron played an important role in here...is iron connected with something ritual to Finns?

    • @MacahMacah
      @MacahMacah 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

+Ebne Al I don't know how it compares to other cultures, but for ancient Finns up to 1800s, iron and steel were very powerful things. There were concepts about "tämänpuoleinen" (of this world, on this side),"tuonpuoleinen" (otherwordly, on the other side) and "väki" (essence, power), many things were believed to have these properties and they were used to acchieve different things, and iron and steel were amongst the strongest and multipurpose because of the huge amount of "väki" in them (these concepts become a bit muddled because of their long history, generally "väki" was the manifestation of "tuonpuoleinen", but it could be used to cause things that are "tämänpuoleinen" and "tuonpuoleinen"). Some say because they were such revolutionary materials for those people. An iron nail over the door would keep the dead from coming in (general negating of other wordly things), one type of spirit animal for a shaman could've been described as a Dog with Iron Fur (iron colored), when the cows were let loose on the fields the person who owned them walked around each cow 3 times with 3 iron sickles in their hand and then buried the sickles by the barn to ensure the cows would come back (the ritual involved more things but this was the part with iron).

@Sami Sund Only gave the actual translation - not touching any intertextuality. Not going alng or against what he said. Just that people wouldn't think that Raudan synty is literally trnslated as the Riddle of Steel. Simple as that :)
I know that Conan spoke to his god Crom (funny name - maybe they had Yron, Goald and Cilver too :) ). But I'm not such a Conan, nor the Governator, fan that I would know all the wisdom of Conan - I'll admit, guilty.
I don't get much from it since I was in my teens. Big man swinging a massive (slow) sword, sme people run around half naked. Bet the ladies had the bikini armors that magnetically pull the arrows and blades to them, not to the flesh. Fun to look, not to wear I bet. Oh, and Arnie - uhm Conan - KO'd a camel.
I don't think about it between the times it's airing in TV :) I last watched the film about 10 years ago. or 7 or 13. Before that it was maybe early 90's.

    • @kainptz
      @kainptz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@finnicpatriot6399 Karelians are not Finns. Yes, we are all Finno-Ugric. But the Finns and we (iam karelian) are different people with different cultures, despite the fact that in eastern Finland many indigenous Finns have Karelian-Izhorian roots. And the runes for Kalevala were mainly recorded in eastern Karelia, i.e. in Russian.

    • @finnicpatriot6399
      @finnicpatriot6399 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@kainptz Karelians are Finns just as Savonians and Tavastians are Finns. Finns doesn't refer to the specific tribe Finns Proper / Suomalaiset any more. It refers to all of them. By your logic, I am not a Finn as I am mostly Tavastian, Karelian and Savonian.

    • @kainptz
      @kainptz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@finnicpatriot6399 In this regard, I agree. Similar to yours, northern Russians are also Vod, Izhora, eesti, latgals, Novgorod people, Krivichi, Chud, Veps and Karelians mostly. But these are the ones from which the Finnish people were formed. But the Karelians developed outside the Finnish ethnic group, along their cultural path for many centuries. So yes, Finns have Karelian roots, but Karelians don't have Finns. Not everywhere. We still have a different culture. Our people have long since dispersed. For example, the Karelians of Lake Onega practically did not mix with the Finns. We mainly had connections with the Novgorodians and Vepsians, then with the newcomers Merya and Vladimir-Suzdal.
