Travis & suzi, this is my favorite lynyrd skynyrd song and like a lot of their stuff, it comes with a story. when the band returned from the knebworth festival in 1976, they were planning a fall tour. on labor day weekend, both allen collins and gary rossington crashed their cars. gary had a brand new gran torino that he crashed into an oak tree; he was on quaaludes and fell asleep. he knocked out his front teeth and broke his leg and was unable to do the tour. ls canceled the fall tour and ronnie van zant fined gary $5000. this song is about gary and his reckless lifestyle; rvz used to call gary "prince charming", which is referenced in this song. it is one of the most musically intricate songs in their catalogue, all three guitar players have solos! this concert is two months before the plane crash that killed steve gaines and ronnie van zant and it is the final concert of the classic line-up that was filmed in its entirety. turn it up!

I can't think of a group that can produce guitar solos that have the sound and feeling that Lynyrd Skynyrd did.

It's always good to see them live! The studio version is clearer so you can understand the lyrics. They toured extensively in the '70's, saw them many times. Ronnie was truly concerned with his friend when he wrote this song. Ironically, Gary was the oldest living survivor of the original band members, having just passed away in March 2023.
Those of us that were around as teens or young adults know exactly what a Quaalude is.Ronnie referenced the effect of them in the line he sang 'Can't speak a word when you are full of ludes'. Quaalude's were very potent sedatives,meant to be used in depression or other mental disorders.They were banned and discontinued in the early 80's.They were everywhere in the 70's,and drinking intensifies their effect,he was fortunate the wreck wasn't fatal.

So glad you pulled up the lyrics. The first guitarist you saw with the long dark wavy hair (Gary Rossington) was the one who hit an oak tree with his brand new Ford Gran Torino and inspired the song. All the band was going a little too hard, truth be told. Ironically, Gary was the longest surviving member and was still touring with the latest version of Skynyrd. Gary passed March 5 of this year. RIP.
If i were to pick out one band during the amazing plethora of rock bands during the 60s, 70s and 80s i would put Skynard on top even though we never got to see everything in full for a long period of time. What an amazing talented band!
