The Wolf Hunterz React or Make a Reaction Video To Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird (Live August 21st, 1976) as they open for the rolling stones. • Lynyrd Skynyrd Free ...
Travis & Suzi Q, You guys have already done a live Free Bird reaction, from the 1977 Oakland show; this one is from the knebworth festival in 1976 as an opener for the rolling stones. this is far and away the best live version of this song, hands down. the stage was designed to look like the rolling stones tongue logo and lynyrd skynyrd was given one rule: do not go out on the tongue! they obeyed for most of the set but being the wild-eyed southern boys that they were, they couldn't resist forever. the recently departed gary rossington plays the haunting slide guitar, allen collins (who wrote the song when he was 18 and who's girlfriend actually said the opening line during an argument) plays the main lead and steve gaines also joins in on the fun. watch as bass player leon wilkeson tries to join in on the "3 guitar Army" fun only to be jerked back by his amp wire! by this point, free bird generally ran about 20 minutes, but the stones management was in the wings screaming at the band to cut it short. not only were they over their allotted time, but mick jagger was furious that they broke the only rule! enjoy!

Lyrics
If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
For I must be traveling on now
'Cause there's too many places I've got to see
But if I stay here with you, girl
Things just couldn't be the same
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now
And this bird you cannot change
Oh, oh, oh, oh
And the bird you cannot change
And this bird, you cannot change
Lord knows, I can't change
Bye-bye baby, it's been sweet love, yeah, yeah
Though this feelin' I can't change
But please don't take it so badly
'Cause Lord knows, I'm to blame
But if I stay here with you, girl
Things just couldn't be the same
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now
And this bird you cannot change
Oh, oh, oh, oh
And the bird you cannot change
And this bird, you cannot change
Lord knows, I can't change
Lord help me, I can't change
Lord, I can't change
Won't you fly high, free bird, yeah
Don't matter if they're opening or closing Lynard Skynyrd don't do any half assed performances. All or nothing.
This is my favorite video of their live performance. They were the best. Three guitars, one caveman bass, one piano, and a madman drummer, all working together in perfect harmony. Legends. RIP to all who died in the 77 crash, and since. Good choice on not pausing it. That would be sacrilege.
Legend has it that the Stones didn't want any other bands out on the tongue but Skynyrd was eff that.
There was a quote from the stage manager (I think) about their performance which went something like “after ten minutes you wondered if anyone would match them, after an hour you wondered if anyone would even bother trying” the official crowd was 120,000 but unofficial estimates put it anywhere between 150,000 and 300,000.
My future wife and I were there. One of the hottest days of a record breaking hot summer. We hired a private coach to take over 30 of us down to Knebworth overnight from Scotland. We were burned so badly in the sun that we had to stop halfway home the next day to buy every bottle of calamine lotion the small chemist shop in the Borders town possessed. We still both have the original programs.
This is a perfect performance that illustrates what happens when you tell a "Good Ole Boy" Southerner they can't do something. Their answer is usually "Oh yea, hold my Jack Daniels and watch this". The producers of the concert told all the bands that they were not allowed to go down on the tongue (Rolling Stones trademark). Watch Ronnie Van Zant motion for his guitarists to come on down. LOVE IT!!!!!! 10cc was scheduled to play right after Lynyrd Skynyrd and they postponed coming on for 2 hours because they obviously felt their performance would be a let down after this Free Bird perfomance.
Rumer has it Skynyrds performance blew the Stones off the stage!
Rumour has it, he's still playing that solo today.....😂👊🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤘🏻
It's hard to believe this was forty seven years ago And all the skynard members are gone except for the Drummer....... rest in peace
When you are Riding that Wave and the Audience is Right there for Every Note ...you don't end the Ride, you Kick it up Another Notch! Who cares if the Stage Manager is having a Stroke Yelling at You, you can't hear him Anyway!
Happy 71st Birthday for Wednesday to the late, great, tall & lean guitar machine Allen Collins: songwriter, foot stomper, stage jumper and guitarist extraordinaire 🎉 🎸
Forget the Stones. Skynyrd ruled the day!
Allen Collins shredding it on the tongue is Americana at its best
"Bring out my mules and kick 'em one time!"
The rolling stones forbid them from stepping on that big tongue. Ronnie Van Zant said "fuq that."
They were just pissed because they ripped that place up. Skynyrd was always hard for any band to follow because they rock hard and put on a great time.
My first boss Tony Burton, was there as a huge Rolling Stones fan & he said Skynyrd blew away everyone else on the bill & he became a massive Skynyrd fan & as a result so did I. That performance at Knebworth was during that incredibly hot summer of 1976 in the UK.
My man Leon was not joking on the bass. Top three live performance ever for me.
This is the Only live version that should be watched.
True southerners. Being one myself, I'm sure the conversation went something like, "well, what are they going to do to stop us?" "Let's find out..." 😂
