Newton spent the back half of his life exploring the then current theories of alchemy, pursuing the ultimate expression of its art by transmuting substances. It was considered science in his day, and he approached it scientifically. "You're the shadow of the man you're standing in" could also refer to the other performers. Al Yankovic is undoubtedly the King of Parody. Which is exactly what ERB does.
It's actually extremely clever. In math there is an unsolvable problem involving shadows cast by higher dimensional objects into lower dimensions. Imagine you live in a 2d world, and somewhere 'above' you (a dimension you cannot perceive) a 3d object casts a shadow onto your 2d world. Mathematically there is no way to calculate the size and shape of the object casting the shadow, no matter how much it moves or rotates or anything, there are always multiple mutually exclusive answers and you can never prove one to be correct over the other by just observing the shadow. Newton is saying his mind is on a higher dimension, and he *can* calculate the size and shape of the shadow Nye is standing in, but Nye cannot comprehend the brain casting the shadow. Solid solid bar, possibly the best ERB has ever produced.
Regarding the calculation at the end: Yes, the answer to ? is the imaginary, _i,_ but Isaac Newton didn't believe in imaginary numbers per se - he was with Descartes, Cardano, and Girad in describing calculations involving _i_ as "solution impossible" (Cardano even said it was like "mental torture" working with imaginary numbers) since imaginary numbers don't actually map to reality. I would argue that trying to turn material a into material b is science if you do it through scientific methods and not while reciting a spell or something. Especially "back in the day" when you knew not all what we know now. Also the "what?" was the question from Isaac to Bill: What is the answer to this mathematical question?
Newton published the Principa when he was 44, introducing calculus, the theory of gravity and the laws of mechanics. In the book, he also used the new methods and principles introduced to infer the shape of the earth, calculate the speed of sound and dismiss the heliocentric model (still controversial at the time) for the modern gravitocentric model, among other things. This book is considered one of the strongest influences behind the industrial revolution and remained the authority on gravity and mechanics until Einstein. He published a revised second edition at age 60. In his 60s, he developed an analytical framework for cubic curves/equations, along with postulates that he partly helped prove in his 70s, but the last of which weren't proven until after his death. That's what he did with "the back half of his life".
@@devilsthadvocate2002 Nah, heliocentric was already old hat. Greeks proposed it, Copernicus proved it. To quote Wikipedia on Newton's model, "Already in the mid-1680s he recognized the "deviation of the Sun" from the center of gravity of the Solar System."
Love it how his interpretation of "What" was a as if it was the name of a variable and not him Quizzing Bill Nye. Its "What?" as a question not as a noun (What).
For anyone looking for who Nye debated, it was Ken Ham who had created the Ark Encounter. Don't worry I won't leave my opinion on that here unless asked :)
As far as Newton being into religion that is very true. You have to remember that up until recent history scientists were mostly religious. They thought God had created the universe and set things in motion. A lot of them were looking to prove it through science. As far as dying a virgin? Meh so what. Plenty of insanely intelligent people end up just a bit odd. There just seems to be a line of intelligence that when crosses makes you socially inept.
I'm not entirely sure, but i think at Newton's time "virgin" meant someone who was never married. They used "chaste" to say what we mean by "virgin" now. So technically he might not be chaste, but since he never married he is a virgin. *considering the fact he was a Christian, he was most likely also chaste tho
Weird Al is DOPE and hilarious.. always has been.. p.s. I truly feel like if we met in person, we would have alot in common and talk for hours about all kinds of different things.. Your level of knowledge is impressive my guy. RESPECT.
As I'm sure many many have mentioned the guy playing Sir Isaac Newton is non other than the ICONIC!!! Weird Al Yankovic - try White and Nerdy - he has a deeeeepppp catalog. Great reaction as usual and I'll leave it there :)
you need to react to a lot of Weird Al Yankovic. he was the one who did sir issac newton. he is an absolute genius when it comes to music and parodies. he turned it into a complete artform
“Whoever this is, he can rap.” Alfred Matthew “Weird Al” Yankovic. He has been making music for 45 years since 1976 when he was 16 and last performed on stage a week ago. He parodies songs. He parodies music styles. He does polka medleys of songs. And he does original songs that are extremely quirky lyrically. And they’re all really good. As far as I’m aware, he and his band can perform any style of music. His last album 2014’s Mandatory Fun was so successful it was everywhere on the internet for months. Kurt Cobain of Nirvana famously said he knew his band had made it when Weird Al parodied one of their songs. I’m just saying, if you like music, chances are you at least know who Weird Al is. And if you don’t, I highly recommend you try some of his music. I doubt you’ll be disappointed. It seemingly covers everything.
Weird Al is a joker and never makes music or jokes in hate or anger. A very humble person who respects others opinions even if they are completely off from facts. And when he said "is what?", it was asked as a pop quiz question. But kudos to you for knowing that answer!
Fun fact arsenic used to be in the paste that kept wallpaper on walls and it could have also contributed to the demise of Napoleon after the Battle of Waterloo but Sir Isaac Newton also created calculus to explain where his brain was coming from in terms of the units of force and my dad teaches it or at least he used to at the University of Chicago but when you start using an ancient alphabet that still technically exists to explain numbers you have officially lost me. Also I think Bill and I was referring to the fact that Isaac Newton stuck a needle in his eye to see if he could get more precise separation of color for the visible light spectrum if I'm remembering my trivia correctly
I disappeared down the rabbit hole some time ago of your discovery of Weird Al, but you said you were doing reaction videos based on fan votes. You really need to include this link in the links you put on those videos. Love to watch your reactions in insights.

Everyone has their favorite Weird Al song, however, I think the best one to introduce you to him would be "Fat" which is a parody of Michael Jackson's "Bad" It's one of his earlier songs, but it showcases his ability to parody nicely. He is one of those rare musicians that can really perform almost any genre incredibly well.
Mr. Lboyd. I loved it when you said that the guy playing Newton is the best guest star for his cadences. I agree. I don't know where this recording falls in the sequence of your recordings, but you've done a whole slew of commentaries on that guy's performances. That guy...is Weird Al. This ERBH is one of my favorites! Weird Al tares it UP! I watched the outtakes and it was surprisingly difficult to catch that apple while keeping his eyes on the camera.
Ah this brings me back. The first time I saw this I got super excited seeing Weird Al was playing the part of Newton. Most recognize him pretty easily but some people are thrown, he is a unique niche I suppose, but he was particularly well known since I think the 80s.
One of the things that make Mr Tyson so popular is that he can explain science in a way the average person can understand it. Which is why he hosted so many TV shows. And I guess that this is the reason for the 'putt the swag back' line. Since he made watching science programs popular again (for a while).
He's definitely listened to some weird al stuff before this video. I'm just surprised he didn't recognize him. He pretty much looks the same other than his clothes.
I've been watching ERB for years. I love that you're analyzing all parts of this because in all honesty, I don't know most of the stuff they rap about. I know I'm late to the channel but if you haven't watched Shakespeare vs Dr Suess, PLEASE watch it. Watsky is so good in that one.
Thanks for an enjoyable video. You are obviously well prepared. I know the youTube genre demands this is the first time you are seeing the material, but your work is strong enough that you could do away with that pretense.
Actually the Bible does reference dinosaurs. Behemoth(likely a large dinosaur like a brontosaurus or similar), dragon(likely a general term for multiple dinos), and a leviathan which likely represents a plesiosaur or other sea monster or a general term for sea monsters. The word dinosaur is not present, but ‘dinosaur’ is a modern word. The Bible often describes things using characteristics instead of using words we would name them. This includes the fact that the did not have the same name for a rhinoceros that we do today. They called a rhino a unicorn, meaning ‘single horn’. Many other civilizations illustrated and described dinosaurs before the ‘discovery’ of their remains. It’s not uncommon the come across depictions of dinosaurs existing during the same period as man in ancient art and literature.
For the record, "BEAKER" isn't just a Muppet. There was also a kids TV show called "Beaker's World" which a guy played an "tinkerer" / experiment-doer named Beaker. who educated the children in the audience with all sorts of interesting science-y stuff. It was out around the same time a the TV show "Bill Nye the Science Guy", but I don't recall which one came out first. (both shows were in the same vein, just with different styles)

I will note, he was asking nye to answer his equation that he figured out as a child. And I would say Neil deGrasse Tyson is the coolest scientist. Also the daggers in Leibniz is a whole issue, and a fight over who got credit and wrote a particular paper, regarding who of them exactly created calculus, I believe Leibniz accused newton of stealing his work or something in 1699.

Somehow I'm not surprised that someone so chill knows his science and theories. White and Nerdy had you debating but I'm proud to have you on the nerd team. We just got stronger.
“Whoever this guy is” this is where my heart shattered
When you finish with Epic Rap Battles of History, you could just do all of Weird Al's music videos. :)
Agreed
he's reacted to almost a dozen of Al's videos since the start of the year :-)
I always have loved this battle for its flow but it was great having someone with more knowledge explain a few of their lines in depth. Cheers mate 😁
For scientists Neil D Tyson.....Definitely has some swag. He is cool and charming. Most scientists don't seem to be able to cover either of those. Besides Pluto is king of its position now instead of the runt of the litter
Being on t.v. doesn't make you cool. And most scientist don't need to be cool and charming. Their job isn't to con people or get ass. It's too solve problems essentially. People with minds like that don't waste their time with such things 24/7
@@lastwolflord He is not cool because he is on tv. He is cool because he is a charming guy. Science is cool and the more people who think that way the better.
@@mattroxursoul How would you know how he is in real life? Have you personally met him? Never believe everything you see on t.v. till you 100% know for sure.
@@lastwolflord He has been on podcasts and stuff forever. You can't fake that sort of thing. He could very well be an asshole in private, but he knows how to hide. Which would just give more evidence that he knows how to be charming.
@@lastwolflord sounds like the people you're talking about just aren't intelligent enough to know how to handle people.
I think you meant he debunked the GEOcentric model of the solar system in favor of a gravity-driven heliocentric model.
The answer is, " I."
As in the answer to the winner of the rap battle is Sir Isaac Newton.
“Whoever this guy is he can rap”
**angry accordion noises**
I've been waiting for this. You were drawn to the subject matter in this. Thanks!
"Of what?"
"It's i not what"
Me: "It's a QUESTION, Sir... Not a statement..."
Weird Al is DOPE and hilarious.. always has been.. p.s. I truly feel like if we met in person, we would have alot in common and talk for hours about all kinds of different things.. Your level of knowledge is impressive my guy. RESPECT.
I knew the entire Running With Scissors album by heart in my school years. Weird Al is an incredible talent.
"Whoever this guy is, he can rap"
Welp, guess we know who to suggest for you react to next
A lot of people don’t realize that Bill Nye the Science Guy is an engineer with a master’s degree.
I literally learn more watching your ERB breakdowns than any history or science class I've taken
As I'm sure many many have mentioned the guy playing Sir Isaac Newton is non other than the ICONIC!!! Weird Al Yankovic - try White and Nerdy - he has a deeeeepppp catalog. Great reaction as usual and I'll leave it there :)
Doesn't matter what he does, Al is fire.
you need to react to a lot of Weird Al Yankovic. he was the one who did sir issac newton. he is an absolute genius when it comes to music and parodies. he turned it into a complete artform
Bill Nye isn’t a scientist. But he’s quite entertaining. I love how you danced around that so Beautifully.
I love your voice. It’s so relaxing. I could totally listen to you narrate a novel.
What a fantastic reaction! I love this “Epic Rap…”, but you took it to a whole new level. Keep up the get reactions.
One of their best sets of guests. Weird Al as Newton, and Chali 2na as NGT.
I really appreciate how much I learn from your analysis of music.
I gain a greater appreciation for it.🙂✌
“Whoever this is, he can rap.” Alfred Matthew “Weird Al” Yankovic. It seemingly covers everything.
love your reactions you have a brilliant mind and i appreciate that very much! i tend to watch your videos right when they come out keep it up
Bill Nye lost when Weird Al agreed to portray Sir Issac Newton...
My dude, the guest Weird Al Yankovic will be an EPIC journey to discover!!!
Newton was asking Nye what the answer to the question is, not saying the answer is what.
I disappeared down the rabbit hole some time ago of your discovery of Weird Al, but you said you were doing reaction videos based on fan votes. You really need to include this link in the links you put on those videos. Love to watch your reactions in insights.
10:08 Whoever this guy is?????????????????????? Holy hell that is Weird Al Yankovic. Please Please do more of him. White and nerdy is a good starting place it has Key and Peele in it as well
Everyone is pointing out that is Weird Al. Everyone has their favorite Weird Al song, however, I think the best one to introduce you to him would be "Fat" which is a parody of Michael Jackson's "Bad" It's one of his earlier songs, but it showcases his ability to parody nicely. He is one of those rare musicians that can really perform almost any genre incredibly well.
yeah, was probably just lead/mercury poisoning, similar to hatters going "mad" because of the mercury solutions they used to dye leathers.
this is just gravy it doesn't get better than this reaction. thanks for the video. much love gg
Mr. Lboyd. I loved it when you said that the guy playing Newton is the best guest star for his cadences. I agree. I don't know where this recording falls in the sequence of your recordings, but you've done a whole slew of commentaries on that guy's performances. That guy...is Weird Al. Glad to set the record straight.
~ Peter Ferber
I feel like when the actor portraying Dr. Tyson dropped the bar "I put the swag back in Science" was in reference to Dr. Tyson being proclaimed "The Sexiest Astrophysicist".
Woah woah ...woah..hold up.... Did you just trick me into learning something?
One of the things that make Mr Tyson so popular is that he can explain science in a way the average person can understand it.
Which is why he hosted so many TV shows. And I guess that this is the reason for the 'putt the swag back' line. Since he made watching science programs popular again (for a while).
When he was saying
when he was saying what he was asking Bill Nye what the answer to the equation is, but Tyson answered because he's a badass.
He's definitely listened to some weird al stuff before this video. I'm just surprised he didn't recognize him. He pretty much looks the same other than his clothes.
This was before he started listening to Weird Al. In fact I think this was the video that got people to ask him to react to Weird Al.
This is probably the second greatest example of Weird Al's rapping chops. For the greatest example, react to his song 'Hardware Store.'
12:32 i believe he is posing the question to bill to answer
I like that you know pretty much every backstory behind every word in these videos but have no idea who Wierd Al is
He said what because he posed it as a question.
Newton is played by Weird Al and his rhymes are always spot on.
If you like Wierd Al's style you'll love the Edgar Allen Poe vs Stephen King erb that has Watsky in it
For the record, "BEAKER" isn't just a Muppet.
It was Beakman, not Beaker. Beakman's World was a great show.
@@d3x03 Really? Huh. I thought it was "Beaker's World". (it's been a LONG time, and my memory aint so good) Well, if so, thanks for setting me straight.
Loved Beakmans World!! Didn't care for Nye
He Was asking Bill Nye "what is the answer" not "the Answer is What"
2:00 Newton wasn’t the first. Just the first that published it
Dinosaurs are in the Bible that called dragons they were called dragons throughout history until we discovered the bones and called them dinosaurs for ferocious lizard or something like that
The part where Neil deGrasse Tyson says on some Harry Potter business makes me laugh every time
I see that since this video you've discovered Weird Al. He is extremely talented and due to the nature of most of his work he probably doesn't get half the respect he deserves.
Weird Al Yankovic is a parody musician, this was right up his alley and his original stuff is fantastically underrated, but yeah the dude can Rap.
Newton was asking "what" not answering "what".
Solid respect for recognizing that equation in that form
I was going to talk about how Newton was challenging Nye to solve the equation with his verse, but others already have, so instead I'll just recommend that you check out Weird Al songs. He does some amazing parodies
I'm adding my voice to the chorus of people telling you to check out Weird Al Yankovic. The man is the gold standard of parody singers for a reason. He's been around since the 1983, is a master of the accordion, has a great sense of humor about himself, and by all accounts is a really great guy. I couldn't even begin to list all of his songs you should listen to, but for your tastes I'd say start with Word Crimes. It's a parody of Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines. You also can't go wrong with any of his polka covers (every album has a montage of pop songs covered as polka songs). Amish Paradise (Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio cover) and White and Nerdy (Ridin Dirty by Chamillionaire cover) are great if you want to hear him rap more. Fat (Bad by Michael Jackson cover), Tacky (Happy by Pharel) and Eat It (Beat It by Michael Jackson cover) are also legendary among his work.
Weird Al Yankovic is the KING of parody music my man, if you haven't heard of him you could spend WEEKS reviewing his material!! For the majority of the 80's and 90's you hadn't 'made' it in the music industry unless HE had parodied one of your songs!!! Some of his best work was Fat, White and Nerdy, Amish Paradise, Eat It....so sooooo many more, enjoy!!!
