Race report
Contested over 200 laps and over the course of 2 hours and 56 minutes, the race was won by Richard Petty for his record seventh at the Daytona 500, beating Bobby Allison to the line by 3.5 seconds. Ricky Rudd, Buddy Baker, and Dale Earnhardt rounded out the Top 5.[2] A new generation of smaller cars, with a wheelbase of 110 inches (down from 115in.) made their debut in this race.Bobby Allison dominated Speedweeks from the beginning, winning the pole position, his 125-mile qualifying race, and was considered the prohibitive favorite for the 500. He was driving a 1980 Pontiac Le Mans, which was the only car in the race with a "fastback" sloped rear window, greatly improving aerodynamics and downforce on the rear spoiler over the "notchback" profiles of the Buick Regals, Pontiac Grand Prixs, and Ford Thunderbirds. The Le Mans was on the NASCAR approved model list, but no other team thought to build one.Allison led the most laps and appeared to be the car to beat. But Allison lost considerable time when he ran out of fuel and had to coast through most of a lap to make his final pit stop. Meanwhile, on Richard Petty's final planned pit stop, Petty's crew chief Dale Inman, who was working his final race with the team before leaving to become Dale Earnhardt's crew chief, opted not to change tires and only took on fuel. Petty then re-entered the track with a considerable lead that Allison rapidly closed, but could not overcome before the finish. The race was contested in front of 130,000 paying spectators and featured 49 lead changes. 18 laps were run under the caution flag. It also gained the distinction of being one of the few Daytona 500 races where the final caution flag occurred before the halfway point of the race.[2]Petty earned $90,575 ($249,612 when adjusted for inflation) for winning, the greatest purse of his entire career. Blackie Wangerin finished last at the event after an accident on lap 17.[2]First Daytona 500 starts for Ronnie Sanders, Tim Richmond, Kyle Petty, and Billie Harvey.[2] Only Daytona 500 starts for Glenn Jarrett and Don Sprouse.[2] Last Daytona 500 starts for Johnny Rutherford, Bill Elswick, Don Whittington, James Hylton, Cecil Gordon, Bruce Hill, and Blackie Wangerin.[2]Dickie Boswell would make his only Winston Cup Series attempt at this race.[2] He went on to be fairly successful in the Xfinity Series, though he never won at that level.

Chris, that was an excellent build of the Petty Buick Regal! The colors and detail pop! Keep em' coming!
Thanks John!
I am a Richard Petty fan; I always loved his car(s). Blue is one of my favorite colors too. :D
i am currently building the kyle petty #42 1981 regal monogram kit at the moment. i have been building models for 30+ years. i am using some of the technics i have learned from hpiguy videos. it is never to late to learn something new.
Thanks, enjoy your kits!
Just WOW........ I really love when you do these stock car builds, I been passing the same make and model car for sale, totally stock and cherry looking and here's it's as a racer. Thanks for a great build!
Thanks John!
I watch most of your videos, I like your technique. All the different models come out great . I used to build, but now my eyes are too bad. The music is definitely a bonus. 👍👍
I've been looking forward to this video. I have this one in the post having just finished the #88 Bobby Allison Regal kit.
Thanks!
Very nice! Thank you Model Roundup for this kit to allow Chris to show all of us how great these kits can look, regardless of the age.
Thanks Stu!
When I saw the photo of the car on your video upload I thought it was the real car until I saw it was a new build by you. Awesome work. I was a big Petty fan back in his racing days and built all of his cars from the 70's and 80's. I actually got to meet him and talk and get his autograph and picture with him a few years back at Chicagoland Speedway. This 60 year old was like a little kid. He is a class act and I don't see anyone ever getting close to 200 wins.
Thanks a lot Jim!
Looks great! I would love to see a video on how you store and display your completed model kits
Thanks!
No plans to do a video of models on a shelf, but the rest get stored in dollar store tupperware containers I can stack and see inside of.
It’s so nice to actually see that chrome “horn” on the front of the car, aka bumper. This is a “stock” car vs today’s cookie cutter cars. I miss the individual manufacturers look to their cars.
Great build as always.
Thanks Rich, the older cars sure inspire more excitement!
I have only known cookie cutter racing, but have heard about how tuning and aerodynamics accomplished by a specific team really made all of the difference. NASCAR was a full team effort. Now, theoretically, every car is exactly the same. Boring!
@@bobastu go ytube 1979 National napa 500 NASCAR was epic from 78 till 86 after that its all down hill
@@charlesrichardson4032 I grew up in Jersey, and we had Wall Twp and Englishtown tracks. One for 1/4 mile and one oval. Never even heard of NASCAR until I joined the Navy in 1992. I hate to admit this but I used to watch in 95-97 and rooted for Jeff Gordon. I know, don't lynch me. The older races are a lot more fun to watch. I'll have to check out the Napa race. Thanks man!
@@bobastu nothing wrong with rooting for 24 lol ... I wish Jeff still raced or I'd gladly watch more races ... Im currently working on his 97 Jurrasic Park car and have another one and would like to do his chromallusion car from the winston all star race in 98 , I cant find a good paint match though ?
Being from the UK, I don't know the history of these cars and drivers, but they look fantastic - low and mean looking. Great build as usual, and the finished car looks amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks man! Old school NASCAR was a good time!
Love the 70 and 80' s NASCAR models. Great video!
Me too, I have Cale's Hardees Monte on the way!
Ace looking car and a gorgeous build. Loving your videos 😍👍
Thank you, and thanks for watching the video and leaving a nice comment! Much appreciated!
I just love your work. Love the Nascar models you do.I am going to the hobby store next week and pick this one up. you are an inspiration to me. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Barry, enjoy your models!
Such a great looking stock car... Back when NASCAR still ran stock bodies. I always loved the G body in NASCAR trim.... Good job, keep up the good work!
Thanks Chris!
Outstanding work! It looks fantastic. Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you! Cheers!
Hey bud, you come off with another high quality item there. Nice work as always!
Thanks Jeremy!
Hello Chris, several years ago I built the Petty car and I found that Model Master French Blue was a close match to Petty Blue. Came out pretty good. You did a really good build, hpiguy quality!
Thanks Larry!
The king back on the bench man! Love these videos🔥
Thanks Dude!
hpiguys Workshop No Problem!
Excellent job Chris as always. Thoroughly enjoyed this build , I also purchased this kit and look forward to building this model
Thanks Paul, enjoy it!
Whoa! Amazing work! I love the 70s and 80s nascars I gotta pick myself up one of these JR kits cause this is an incredible car for my case. I remember my mother driving me to school in her Buick regal 😂
Thanks Michael! And they looked a lot like the cars we drove on the street!
@@hpiguy nowadays some sticker headlights are the closest you get 😂
Tricky paint job on this one, but you hit a home run on it. The way you masked the body was amazing. To bad about the decals, that humidity is a killer, I know I live in Florida. I will be moving soon to an island in the South Pacific to a town called Pago- Pago. Hope there is a hobby store there, if not there is always amazon. Again Chris amazing build. Best channel on TH-cam!
Thanks Bud! Enjoy your new place, keep those decals dry!
What can I say.... like usual great job! It help when you start with a great kit. Just follow the instructions and tips you and all the other great modelers mentor out here. Kits like theses are only going to inspire the new comers and beginner to keep build.....
Thanks!
Nice model.. not bad for such old molds... Model Roundup are posting on FB a '66 Impala SS 396 that I love... and I'd love to see you build it :) Thanks for another cool video!
Thanks! I've got it, Revell sent it over, stay tuned!
Another amazing build my friend. You just keep making them better and better. Keep up the great work and Rust In Peace.
Thanks my man!
Your screen shot looks like the real thing, outstanding!
Thanks dude!
Another 👍 great build love it keepem coming Chris
Thank you Dennis!
All you need is to find the super bird he drove. Great build as always Chris.👍👍
Thanks Charles!
I love that ' lazy Susan' you use, allows you to get to all areas of the part with the paint, very smart bro.
Yup, Tamiya Paint Stands, Modelroundup.com has them as well.
Holy crap, this soooo cool!! Richard Petty would be proud!!! Excellent! !!!!!
Thanks a lot Ron!
That was always my favorite R. Petty paint scheme. I wish he had used it for more than one season.
Another great build Chris. Keep em coming.
Thanks Bob!
Humidity? I have heard of such weather conditions. Move to Vegas,Chris 🚛. I have used your “header” paint technique..great results . Thanks for your time and talent. The walls are always dry here..🏖
Haha, yeah there I'd melt in the heat.
Always fun with the weather.
I like this model a lot!
Me too!
Wow this looks realistic and great love your petty buick excellent work
Thank you so much 😀
@@hpiguy your welcome you do a great job in the details building you model cars
As always I enjoy the work you do my friend great build
Thanks Edward!
Great review and build of the Petty car Chris!....Bill
Thanks Bill!
Hey Chris, your stills and video always turn out so well, could you do a video talking about the equipment you use?
I use inexpensive Canons.
No plans to talk about making videos but the still camera is an old SX170IS and the video camera I got late last year on sale, is a HFR82. Both are set to automatic. Thanks!
@@hpiguy Thanks Chris!
Funny to watch this again now, just watched the 81 Daytona 500 last night.
Thanks and thanks for watching the channel!
Stay tuned for another Petty car today!
Looks great!! And you've got to love that legendary humidity in Wischeeseland. Plaster the front end with a host of Wisconsin bugs and it would be proto-typically correct.
Thanks bud!
Got to see Richard Petty run this at Rockingham a few times back in the day (when NASCAR was NASCAR!!).
I have the 1980 Monte Carlo version for the build off our Discord group is doing. Can't wait to dig into it!
Enjoy!
Nice build Chris. Gotta love those Tamiya spray paints.
Thanks Mark!
i got this kit haven't done anything to it yet thanks for the video
Get to buildin!
You may find this funny but i built that model when it originally came out, its one of the ones i removed the window net and some of the bars put in 2 seats and made it look like a street car. I dont know if you have any say in things but there's a piece missing, nascar rules stipulate the fuel tank must be sealed off from the cockpit so there can be no gap under the rear window, there's supposed to be a sheet metal panel closing the gap. In case you want to include that in your review of the kit. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Thanks Mike!
Another awsome build chris.
Thanks Paul!
I really love these old school Nascar models, they always come out looking fantastic. I'd love to get one but I'm kinda just holding out for a Dale Earnhardt kit...
Thanks man!
Beautiful job !
Thank you so much 😀
Another awesome Petty build! You need to do his '84 Pontiac man!
If they issue it, yup!
Great looking build my friend
Thanks Shannon!
Beautiful, awesome and fantastic! 🥇👏👏🏆
Thank you Mario!
OMG - Off the charts good. Way to go, Chris -
Thank you so much for your efforts and sharing...
Thanks as always RA!
Wonderful to have these classic nascar kits available again!
I agree!
Next build you should do the revell 1967 Plymouth gtx or the AMT 1969 gtx
Those are older re-issues so I'll have to catch them next time around! I stick to current issues and reissues from the past few weeks.
I want to give this video 43 likes! Great work as usual, Chris! As a NASCAR fan since the very early 80s, I really enjoy these quite a bit.
Thanks James, up next will be Cale's Hardee's car when it comes in!
Believe me or not but I have the 94 grand prix # 43 built by petty enterprise in my shop right now, boss got at action
Cool!
Another great review man. Love watching these Salvino kit reviews of yours. What glue do you use for the kits(aside from the glass)? Have you ever tried airbrushing a kit? Just curious. Keep up the great work on these vids man
Thanks!
I prefer Bondene by Plastruct.
I own a few airbrushes and use them as needed if a can won't do it.
kool , thank you.....nice one...on my I wannit list
Robert
Thanks!
Awesome build.
Thanks!
Super job
Thanks man!
Awesome build! Race cars require a white driveshaft due to if one falls out another driver will see it.
Thanks!
Looks nice Chris
Thank you Charlie!
The release of the highly anticipated Peterbilt 378 longhauler, looks like a re-box of Italeri's 1/24 scale Peterbilt 378.The MSRP of the Italeri kit,is roughly $85.00.The AMT kit, will probably be sold for $55.00 MSRP;if you include the city, state, and federal sales taxes.
I personally wouldn't worry too much about the pinstripes on the Regal. I'm a massive Buick fan and Petty fan, so I've researched his '81 car extensively. Depending on which race, the car had either black/dark blue striping (very difficult to tell), white pinstripes or none at all. I've been to the Richard Petty Museum and the Daytona car currently has white pinstripes, and I believe during the race it had none.
Thanks man, appreciated!
Hey Chris -- just watched this from a link on the Salvinos JR Facebook page. Super helpful !!! I noticed you didn't mention anything about sanding/wet sanding the primer coat on the body before spraying the Tamiya colors. Did you just spray right over the primer without any sanding ?
Thanks for visiting!
These are quick two day model builds, not model making classes, just to show how the kit can end up.
I spray and pray, no sanding, etc.
@@hpiguy Love it ! "spray and pray" LOL. Well they look super !
Hi great job as always, you do such good work with spray cans. I'd like to a video on how you do it. Thanks
There is one, search the home page of the channel, you'll see it.
FYI for everyone. My Ollie's has some Round2 kits at a very good price. They are older kits. I picked up an AMT plated tanker, Transtar 4300, and '49 Mercury police patrol çar for less than $50. Check them out.
Very nice build
Thanks Sam!
Very clean build
Thanks!
Beautiful.
Thanks!
Absolutely love it!
Thanks Devin!
Awesome job! You need to do Richards Pontiac 2+2
If/when they issue it, I'll do it. :)
Awesome !
As usual Chris. Another great and beautiful build on the Petty Buick Regal car. Chris how do you keep your paint booth clean after you’ve finished painting a car or truck ? Thanks, Steve
I don't, it gets pretty dirty and I'll change the filter and scrape the sides every 6-8 kits or so, so about once a month.
Chris -- One thing I wanted to ask about. On the body you used Rustoleum primer (which I believe is enamel) and then sprayed Tamiya color over it (which is lacquer). I've had bad experiences before with lacquer over enamel (the lacquer actually bubbled). I guess the Rustoleum primer is more durable ?
I've never had an issue.
My guess is their primers aren't enamel as some claim, or neither Tamiya nor Rustoleum are harsh enough paints to react poorly with each other once dry.
that is a very cool build . have you ever built the Richard Petty car hauler ? that could be sweet to have them together
Thanks! Nope, never had that one.
I Really like it Chris n God Bless All
Thanks Gary!
That is a sweet build
Thank you Joe!
@@hpiguy
you're very welcome, one question for you, maybe you can help
what's the best source for reference photos
Richard petty he still alive he plays the king from the 1st cars movie
I Like 1981 Buick Regal Very First Generation 3 NASCAR Winston Cup Series History In My Opinion
Are you going to do a video of the mpc 74 plymouth roadrunner
Yup!
Real nice. Do you remember the 1955 Badman 55 Chevy. Can you build one👍👍
Hi Fred, I so know the kit. My reviews are all recent issues, and reissues. If they repop the kit I'll end up reviewing it.
Nice work. Do you build on consignment?
Roll cage already assembled? And chassis parts too?
When you paint your engine detail (bits and bobs) after priming, do you paint with enamels or acrylics? Thanks
I'll use anything I need for the scheme I desire. Some have enamels, some have acrylics, I just grab what I want off my racks and paint. No issues yet. Rustoleums on those blocks is pretty tough.
What ratio do you thin your enamels when doing derail work. Love the channel. I look forward to every review!
Have you ever reviewed the Ryobi 18 +1 18 gauge nail gun?
Nope not that one.
Petty in Buick didn't that coming kool looking kit tho wish they a base Buick model kit.
What ratio do you mix your enamels for detail painting? Paint/thinner
Right out of the bottle.
Chris, hey where can I find the stand you use to paint the body and the alligator clip stand for everything else. Im looking and I can find nothing :( Thanks!
Tamiya Paint Stands at Modelroundup.com, thanks!
Kick but build and kit. Stoopid humidity 😉
Thanks Danny, yeah that sucked, the stripes worked so nice on all the other ones. Just bad luck with the weather this time.
years ago I was taking a tour of the Petty garages near High Point N.C. I was taking pictures of the grounds and Richard Petty himself walked out of one of the garages. He spotted me with the camera and told this fella that was with him something. This other fella started heading my way and I was so afraid that I was in trouble for taking photos, once the guy came up to me he stated, "Mr. Petty would very much like to know if you got a picture of him." I admitted I had, and stood waiting for my camera to be taken away. He said, "Well the King would like a copy of any photos you may have taken of him if you don't mind." I was completely blown away. I stood with a dumbfounded look on my face I'm sure, and said, " Of course anything he wants." Well to shorten this story up, once I had gotten the filmed develope I had 2 shots of the King and I sent copies of both to him, about a week and a half later I got a large manila envelope in the mail. Inside was an autographed, blown up copy of the photo of him. I started freaking out and couldn't believe it. I stil have said photo to this day, and have it locked away for safe keeping and will pass it on to my son. I has become a family treasure for sure.
Cool!
What gloss clear coat did you use?
Future floor polish as stated in the video. Thanks!
Gotta have kit
Enjoy!
Where did you get that clamp you use for painting the bodies. been looking, cant find it
The body holder is in the Tamiya Paint Stand set.

Another awesome stocker build mate, I do need one of these kits.
#showusyerkollectshun
Haha, thanks Gary!
The stripes are a pain. If you clear coat(2 light coats) the decals the day before you use them. They are easier to deal with.
Why can't I post a picture on this site?
You Tube doesn't work like Facebook, comments only.
Very nice I love it
Thanks!
Nice
Thank you!
What about a Petty Mopar???
When they issue them they will get built
