Hey Mark, I’m watching this excellent video again, and I came upon the topic, of the “ mysterious, triangular-shaped, raised panel on the dash : my theory is it was actually fabricated to assist Richard, when he disconnected the steering wheel, and needed to place it on the dash, for quick access etc. . This would have kept it from potentially “hanging-up” on the gauge face-plate when removing or installing the wheel (that’s why it’s probably raised 2 inches or so. It’s size and shape (perimeter) accommodates the wheel perfectly, while minimizing excessive weight (if simply spanning the width of the dash) . It also has a rounded front edge, to aid with the egress of placement and retrieval of the wheel. Just a thought, not a sermon (lol)

Fantastic video! Thank you so much for posting these, I've been planning on building that car for a while. The Petty Brothers (Maurice's sons) mentioned the work that went into that car on a recent episode of their show. That car has long interested me since it started out as a Dodge Mirada before a disappointing test at Daytona led them to reskin it as a Buick with a GM engine. Being a Laughlin chassis it was probably one of the first Mopars built in Nascar with a coil spring suspension.

Fun video, Mark. Excellent resource photos you got. Can't wait to see you do this build.
Following along with your video.....when you got to the front suspension it blows my mind that cup cars didn't even use double shear shock mounts and they're using what appears to be stock MOOG balljoints. These were the "top of the line" cars for their day, but I've seen better built late models, sportsmen and even street stocks in the 90's and 2000's. It goes to show the evolution of safety and technology. As you're familiar with racing, Cup always seemed to trickle down to the short tracks. It was monkey see, monkey do. Heck, I used to buy used parts from cup teams and I bought my fare share of Bilstein shocks from cup teams when they still ran conventional big spring chassis setups. Great series, Mark.

The triangle area of the dash. If its like my car was....the screws holding it on are actually camlocks. Turn them 90° and the pop out, allowing the entire panel to come off and that gives access to all the wiring behind the guages. It comes off (at least on our race car) in about 5-10 seconds.❤ 18:18

I remember reading in Scale Auto years ago about not clear coating over decals, because race cars are smooth but numbers and letters are vinyl and are not shiny. Do you clear coat over your decals? I am trying to build as many cars between 1981 and 2003 as I can, before the night races started…is that when the super shiny cars started? I miss the Daytona 500 starting at 11am and running in the sunshine….thanks again for the info you pass along!

    • @MarkBatsonHobbydude007

I agree! I remember running my fingers over the vinyl “stickers” on many cars. (No clear) I cut the decals as close as I can including the numbers. (remove as much of the carrier film as possible)
I personally don’t clear cars from this era. That’s just me.

Thank you Chris!! I don't build my jacks or jack stands. I get them from Shapeways 3D printing. You can also find some great jacks on ebay.
As to the decals, I am more than happy to buy a few sets if that's ok?
      Thanks my friend!!

Awesome!! The layout on these cars were pretty much the same. I think Jr’s cars were Banjo-Matthew’s but stuff was in the same areas.
      Have fun!!

If you like opening doors etc… check out A 4 garage! This builder does some crazy details!
This guy should be promoted - shared with all in the community! You him and others are right up there with the best! Don’t hear anyone mention his videos! Lot to learn from him and the others! Right up there with Gerald Wingrove and the late Bill Geary!🫡🇺🇸🤔🇺🇸
