  • This is the first part (of two) on how to build the Salvinos JR kit of Richard Petty’s 1979 Daytona 500 winning Oldsmobile. This video concentrates on the engine, interior and chassis - preparation, paint and assembly. Part 2 is about the body, masking & painting the livery, scratch building some extra parts and final assembly.

    I REALLY appreciate these 2 videos they are crucial to new builders of these kits. They look GREAT when done but salvinos is a small company trying to do BIG things so some number mismatches and vague instructions are to be expected but can be VERY complicated for beginners myself included. I dont know why salvinos hasnt made videos explaining the issues but im glad you have thanks you have earned a thunbs up and new subscriber!

    This video helped me quite a bit. I ran into some of the same issues and I had lots of trouble with the directions for the rear assembly.

    I picked up the Cale Yarborough '79 Olds kit last year and just started the kit about 2 months or so. It's a new company for sure, but the instructions are just horrible. Their customer service is great and sent me a replacement metal rear axle that was left out of the box. Someone could probably get the Goodyear script decals for the tires like that as well if they were missing. I glued the firewall and dash down before the roll cage like the instructions said and had to notch the right side of the dash and instrument panel about 1/8" to get the roll cage to fit.
    I sprayed the sprues first and painted myself into a CA glue corner right off the bat. The instructions are very confusing and it's best to dry-fit everything and the drop a few bits of CA glue down. I dry-fitted and glued the U-shaped engine compartment roll tubing and the shock towers first before tackling the roll cage.
    There were two locating pins inside the rear axle housing that I had to drill with a 1/16" bit to remove after gluing the halves together to let the metal rear axle pass through. You have really have to regard your first Salvinos kit as a learning kit. I haven't built a car kit in 30 years, so there was a steep curve on this one, but it's pretty rewarding once you get stuff figured out.
    From a video on their site, the forwardmost hole on the chassis is for the Olds kits, the second one is for the Charger/Roadrunner kits, the third is one is for the Monte Carlo kits, and the fourth one is TBD.
    Your vid helped me figure out the placement of the Panhard bar and the angled roll cage bar to the right of the driver's seat. For better or worse, Salvinos gives you the basics and puts the burden on the builder to get things dialed-in. I recently ordered the Benny Parsons' Olds kit as a do-over, so I am sticking with the Salvinos kits. There is just a learning curve for your first kit is all.

      Yeah, I've read their customer service is good, thankfully I have not had to use it so far! Good luck with the Benny P build :)

    I don't know if I want to start mine now. I thought I had left all of that behind with the AMT and MPC kits.
    I guess when I do start, with some trepidation, I shall have to watch your video again.

      Hahahaha. Oh, don't get too concerned. Just make sure to check the fit before committing to glue :p

    Really well explained video. I'm ordering a Tim Richmond 27 and will more than likely run into similar issues with that kit.

    • @wixy500
      @wixy500  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Stephen. Actually, you might not run into the same issues on the Tim Richmond as I think they are the old Monogram kits re-issued by Salvinos, whereas the Oldsmobile was produced from scratch by Salvinos. Good luck with your build!

      @@wixy500 Good to know! Thanks. I will eventually be getting to work on more of the NASCAR series cars in the future so I've saved your video. I'll be needing it for future builds. I'm 70 years old but I think I have some time left to get a few more done. Great hearing from you.

    Tamiya makes such accurate kits. I wish they would do a 70's nascar series as it would fill a large hole in the nascar model community.

    Great job the reason why the roll cage are rge same back before everyone building there own cars there was a guy named Banjo Matthew's he used a 1964 Ford Galaxy front frame and then used the other cars rear sections he was the best builder back then

    • @wixy500
      @wixy500  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I read Banjo supplied quite a number of teams with their chassis in the 70s and 80s, but not sure if that included Petty Enterprises. It would be interesting to see a list of teams than ran Banjo-built cars.

      Yep! I have since learned how to strip the Salvinos chrome. Will post a video about it in the coming weeks.
