    Bobby Allison’s 1982 Race Winning Buick Regal in 1/24th scale includes 100+ parts, Power Slide decals and REAL electroplated chrome!
    Robert Arthur Allison (born December 3, 1937) is a former American professional stock car racing driver and owner. Named one of NASCAR's 50 greatest drivers,[1] he was the 1983 Winston Cup champion and won the Daytona 500 three times in 1978, 1982, and 1988. His two sons, Clifford and Davey Allison, followed him into racing, and both died within a year of each other.
    Following his victory at Daytona, Allison's car was inspected and was found to have lost its rear bumper, which appeared to have fallen off in a slight bump between two cars at the beginning of the race, causing a multi-car accident. Tests were performed on the car without its rear bumper and it was discovered that the car was faster and handled better without the bumper (better underside aerodynamics and over 70lbs. lighter). It has been claimed that Allison and his crew modified the bumper so that it would fall off easily at the beginning of the race. NASCAR never fined him and the victory stands. Allison and his crew denied the allegations. In the Allison biography Miracle, Allison explained that NASCAR inspectors told the DiGard crew to move the bumper on its mounting points. The team simply tack-welded the bumper back on at an acceptable position, but "forgot" to properly secure it.
    During the course of his career, Bobby Allison accumulated 84 credited victories and 2 uncredited victories making him fourth all-time, tied with Darrell Waltrip. He also won the Daytona 500 in 1978, 1982 and 1988, finishing one-two with his son, Davey Allison. In 1972 he was voted national Driver of the Year after winning ten races and taking 11 poles, including a record 5 straight. He was NASCAR Winston Cup Champion in 1983[1], winning the Driver of the Year award again while driving for DiGard Racing. The 1982 Daytona 500 was fraught with controversy that became known as "Bumpergate". He also won the Firecracker 400 in 1982, making Allison the fourth driver to sweep both Sprint Cup point races at Daytona in the same year. Of note, after Allison accomplished this, no driver repeated such a feat until Jimmie Johnson did it in 2013.
    Allison ran in the Indianapolis 500 twice, with a best finish of 25th in 1975. His NASCAR team owners included DiGard, Junior Johnson & Associates, and Roger Penske, for whom Allison scored four of the five NASCAR wins for American Motors' Matador. The other AMC victory was accomplished by Mark Donohue also racing for Penske in 1973 at Riverside. He raced in NASCAR as a driver/owner of an AMC Matador
    Early in the 1979 Daytona 500, Bobby, his brother Donnie and rival Cale Yarborough tangled early in the race. Donnie led the second half of the race while Yarborough made up his lost laps through caution periods. By the time there were 8 laps to go, Yarborough reached second place and set his eyes on passing Donnie. Bobby was two laps down and was 1/4 mile ahead of the two rivals as Yarborough and Donnie crashed on the final lap. Richard Petty went by and won the race. Bobby passed the wreckage, finished the race, and on his way back around Bobby stopped to check on his brother and make sure he wasn't hurt. He pulled over to the wreck site to offer Donnie a ride to the garage area. Cale Yarborough ran up to Bobby and, according to Bobby, Cale was yelling that Bobby was at fault and hit him in the face with his helmet-cutting his nose and his lip. Bobby climbed out and a fist-fight broke out.
    This fight led to a $6,000 fine for each Yarborough and the Allison brothers.

    The 1980s Nascar cars have left a lasting impression that will never be replicated. I hope these model car companies are prosperous and continue because they sure are making some great kits. We are in the midst of a new hayday if you will, of model car building. You can not find any older kits cheap anymore, just about every kit on ebay has bids. It is a good time to be in the hobby. Thanx Chris!

    Oh My GOD , you hit that 1 on the head there . I had over 8 of those kits. I was right into NASCAR in the 80's and love those kits. I used to have mix my own Testors paints to get the proper colors. You didn't get the stripes a lot of the time back then. I'm surprised you never built these kits as a young lad, I feel old now!!!!!

      Thanks Earl, I was only about 6-10 years old when Dad was doing them, they were out of my skill set and by the time I was old enough the cars were more of the 90s style rounded off cars and I wasn't that into them.

My father and I would build them together. My first grandchild just arrived and I look forward to modeling with him one day. You tips and tricks are all valuable and extremely helpful. • @hpiguy

      Dollar store super glue. If you don't use too much it rarely fogs. If it does fog, Future floor polish clears it over nicely.

    Chris, great build again. If I may make a suggestion, maybe the roll cage would have look great if it was green. When you were talking about your Dad building kits when you were a kid, I also remember my Dad doing the same time. I'm 52 now and in 1975 he built me and 75 Nova hatchback, and did I love the car, he also built a F-5E Tiger2. He painted the instrument panel one side red the other green, I thought that was so cool. Chris thanks for those good memories, it been a long time since I thought about that. Sweet build as always! This does bring back memories. One of my first builds when I was about 7 or 8, so this would have been around 1984-85, was the Darrell Waltrip Mountain Dew version of this Regal - which I hope Salvinos has in the pipeline because I will certainly buy it. At that time I wasn’t painting my kits yet and of course my skill in quality assembly wasn’t great either, but this does bring back great memories! As I got older and built more kits from different model manufacturers I always had a soft spot for the Monogram company and thought their instructions were among the easiest and clearest to follow in the business. As a side note - this was from when NASCAR ruled and close to the end of the “Stock Car” part of the acronym. When the G bodies went front wheel drive and V6 in 1988 there was nothing stock about the cars anymore. People our generation and older are going to love these reissue kits and buy them - because NASCAR ain’t what it used to be.

    Hi Chris:
    Thank you for making these videos. As I said, I FINISHED my Salvinos JR Gatorade Buick kit with a lot of help from your great video!
    Here is my question. I used the Rustoleum 2X black primer on the roll cage/chassis assembly for my kit. What I noticed was that it really didn't feel "dry" or "hard" even after drying for a full day in very low humidity. You had indicated in your videos that it dries in 30 min. in your shop. Have you encountered this with this paint ? It seemed like even after several days it felt "tacky" to the touch. Thanks for any guidance you could provide.

      If my primer feels 'wet' I just hit it with the heat gun and you can see it go flat and dry. After hundreds and hundreds of these videos, no issues yet.
      Make sure you shake it well, and lay down light coats.

    Since this will be my first time building one of those sharp NASCAR kits I'd hate to ruin it in the final stage, almost like hitting the wall just before crossing the finish line, lol.

    Hey Chris:
    I'm building the Salvinos JR Bobby Allison Gatorade Buick kit that you did the review on -- I sprayed the air cleaner and radiator with Rustoleum 2X Matt Clear and the finish was "grainy" or "splochty" -- not smooth. I'd post a picture, but not sure I can here. Fearing the same outcome for the wheels, I used Testors Dullcote Lacquer (#1260) and they came out smooth as silk. Now, the only difference between the two was that for the wheels, I first scrubbed them and soaked them in the Simple Green bath for 30 min. first (I didn't do that for the air cleaner and radiator). But I was curious what product you use from Hobby Lobby that you hinted at in the build video ? Thanks.

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Salvinos gauge decals are a good bit bigger than the molded in gauges so I just lay them over the top. They sit above the gauges and then I brush decal solvent on them and they conform nicely to the raised area.

      @@hpiguy Super, thank you for that information. I was going to ask if you used any decal solution when applying the Powerslide decals. Which decal solution do you use ? another awesome one chris, the only thing I didn't like was all the flash, you'd think as much as they charge for these kits, they could at least clean up the molds, and remove the flash!

    • @hotrodpop1973
      @hotrodpop1973 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya gotta give a little to get a little... These molds are incredibly expensive, massive, and decades old. Recreating them would probably put the cost through the roof. Trust me... worked in a metal stamping shop in the '70's, and when I messed up a die, the boss screamed "DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH YOU JUST COST US!!!"

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thakns Mouse.
      Yeah, the pressures involved in the injection and the ages of the mold, you'll see a bit of flash, but it really only takes a swipe with a blade to remove it.
      A space in a 35 year old mold the size of 1/4 a human hair will create flash.
