    My brother and I had a chance to drive the new Iriz lately and directly compare it to his current 2018 Myvi. We took up the car to a hill to test out the driving dynamics and I just have to say that the handling is FAR, FAR better than the Myvi. At low speeds the car responds with an immediacy to input and the loading up of the steering feel as you progressively drive faster is very well graduated.
    You do not get this feeling with the Myvi, which feels a little disconnected from steering feel with a "stepping" artificial feel as it transitions from light to heavier steering. Proton has nailed down the electronic steering tuning and is underrated in this regard for how well they've made something feel very progressive and natural. On to the engine, the pulling power is very strong and easy to really get up to speed and the CVT paired has no problem reacting to your demands. Even if you are driving fast the brakes cut speed very well which gave me the confidence to really throw it down corners.
    If you are all for practicality and features the Myvi still has a leg up on the Iriz but if you really do enjoy driving a car I think the Iriz will be a LOT more fun.

    • @KonWaiLuen
      @KonWaiLuen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yup, especially this new Iriz where they have finetuned the CVT, really nice to drive. And you are right on the power steering, Proton's setup is impressively good given that the Iriz was their first homegrown EPS.

    Great Driver's POV review Kon! We've been waiting for this for a while and you delivered! Also, very nice sharing the live-on-cam experience taking the bends in the Proton, I love doing that in my Iriz albeit a 2014 model, still handles those curves with no problems.

      @amalinanasruddin2723 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@miltonmiles6324 i can’t comment on the persona because I owned the new Iriz. As for Iriz, I couldn’t tell the difference because I didn’t drive the previous Iriz model for a long time but I can tell you that I didn’t feel the lag or what not on the Iriz. I don’t know lah my personal opinion. Because I noticed that after stopping for traffic light, the transition is very smooth. The only downside for the new Iriz (my personal opinion) is the infotainment, I can’t really play any videos and I asked the SA and Proton, it is for the safety purposes.
      If you are really keen on the practicality you can go with Persona. I have been driving sedan but now I ‘tukar angin’ to hatchback. Baru lah rasa kebujangan 🤣

    Even the 2019 persona improved a lot then the 2016 model. Exterior is one thing...but interior I'm very satisfied from the previous one. After all design and fuel consumption are subjective matters.. I've driven both and the most noticeable thing is the CVT lag had been reduced very well. So for those who keep asking about the cvt or whatsoever.. go and try it for yourself. Test drive and you'll be amazed.

    Glowing review! My wife has the 2020 Iriz and it's been an amazing daily driver for her, we are extremely happy about it. She got used to the low-speed sensation quite quickly due to her experience with driving manual cars, but this facelift's upgrades sound substantial and well worth it.

    • @ndt2046
      @ndt2046 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @John Gomez Have you tried it? And what other new car offers the same at a similar price? Or are all cars at that range mediocre? When I compare Iriz-Persona to Myvi-Bezza, there isn't a clear winner, just pros and cons on both sides that ultimately make it a matter of taste and priorities. The Proton offerings handle better, have superior ergonomics and NVH, whereas the Perodua offerings have better fuel economy, reliability and active safety features. So it just depends on your taste. If you're going to say that these compare unfavourably with non-national rivals... well duh, they cost between 50-100% more.

    • @ndt2046
      @ndt2046 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @John Gomez At a similar price-point, I would have to get a 4 year old Vios/City/Jazz. I see the attraction and would probably be tempted by it too, but I can understand if someone prefers to go for the newer car. In a world where P1 and P2 do not get preferential treatment in the form of taxes on overseas marques, I would go for the Japanese in a heartbeat, but hey we don't get to make the rules...

    I do wonder how difficult it would've been to retro-fit the Iriz back seat headset into the Persona. Shopping between the Ativa and Persona, the lack of a headrest for Persona adds another negative point for the Persona. Some may argue shorter passenger won't have any issue and one can always slouch when sitting at the back, but other than comfort the lack of a headrest also increases the risk of whiplash incase of being rear-ended (sh*t do happens).
    To me it's borderline criminal to omit this especially considering the previous gen Persona had it too.

    I don't remember where I read/watched/heard but I heard that Proton reached out to the gearbox manufacturer for tuning (is it Punch? I'm not sure) and was ignored by the company but after Geely and Proton partnership, Geely wasn't happy about the treatment Proton got about the CVTs since Punch works well with Geely/Volvos so Geely "scold" Punch for ignoring Proton, hence why the recent Proton CVTs are okay compared to the older models of CVTs.

    No ADAS to me it's not a deal braker maybe because both models already aging and Proton want to reduce the cost to avoid the additional cost to the customer. But simple things like Blind Spot Monitoring/ Rear Cross Traffic Alert shouldn't cost to much to implement. I heard facelift Myvi will get this feature. So, Proton still lagging behind P2 again when comes to safety. No matter what they do for both models, it can't hide by the fact they are getting old especially Iriz. Unless you really care about ride& handling maybe you buy them these 2 models but for me i want something new like latest technology. I read someone commented that Iriz/ Persona platform was designed to accommodate CVT gearbox only. So they have no choice to maintain the same Punch CVT and they can't simply change to 4AT like the Saga because it will require additional cost to redesign the platform to accommodate 4AT. Unlike Saga, it was designed to accommodate 4AT like previous Saga BLM so it shouldn't be that complicated to accommodate 4AT. Mind you, even current Saga or Saga BLM based on Savvy's platform.

      I dun have any proof to back these info up:
      1. The original campro was intended to have cam profile switching (ala vtec), but proton could not make that mechanism to put on the engine head. So it was produced without the cam profile switching.
      2. Later, cps version was produced. This is the REAL cam profile switching (ala vtec, not i-vtec ya).
      3. Further later, proton produced cfe charged fuel efficiency (now simply known as Turbo). If im not wrong at this time, vvt mechanism was firstly introduced. Vvt at intake.
      4. With the iriz-later persona & saga, i believe they both use the vvt from cfe, without the turbo.
      If u notice, these modification/iteration are at engine head: kosong no cps no vvt, later cps then now vvt.
      Its hard to say vvt from where as all the engine/combustion parameters for specific engine need to be known in order to design those cps vvt etc.
      U may read in wiki.

      I'm not an owner but I went some long journey with it .
      Interior practicality - 6/10 .
      Well not as spacious like Perodua always does because the seats are bigger to give better thigh support for rear passengers and it's comfortable unlike Perodua.
      Drive and handling - 8.5/10 . One of Proton's best traits .
      Value for money - I would say 8/10 . With this facelifted model and tons of improvement . It looks good . Try it for yourself
      Overall I'll give A 7/10 . Wish they could have used the 4AT instead of CVT transmission . Fuel economy is just OK . But still it's still a good car . No regrets

      Hi! I am a proud owner for the Iriz Active and I’ll score them based on my POV,
      Interior practicality 7.5/10
      I am 150cm in height so it is really spacious for me to drive and especially for my rear passengers since there is a lot of leg space for my rear passengers. The cup holder at the centre console fit the largest cup of Tealive drinks and some boxed beverage. Unfortunately, the cup holders available at the door does not fit my drinking bottle but it fit a small sized mineral water bottle. And not to forget the small room in between the USB port and the aircond control, it it very small but it can fit my Iphone XR and my brother’s Iphone 12.
      Driving and Handling 8.5/10
      In contrast to my previous car. I couldn’t comment much but so far, it was soooooo darn comfortable especially the cornering. *chef kiss
      Value for price: 8/10
      For me, the driving and comfort of the Iriz is on par to Subaru XV (based on my personal opinion) but of course Subaru XV is RM1k per month but Iriz is around RM450 to RM500 a month so there are some spec in Subaru XV that are not available in Iriz. So there’s that.
      So overall, I will rate the Iriz Active 8/10. But again, this is my personal opinion.

      @@areyoukidding6274 personally, I don’t think it’s a waste.
      1) Perodua offers me trade in for RM2k only while Proton offers me RM4k, twice the amount. With that I managed to pay a higher downpayment thus lower monthly payment for the Iriz Active.
      2) I personally love the handling of Iriz better than Myvi. But it is a personal preference. Some prefer Myvi but for me personally, after test drive both cars, I love Iriz more.
      3) Tbh, I personally don’t really like the new look on Myvi. But salute to the new features on Myvi.
      All in all, it is a personal preference. Some prefer Myvi for the features and fuel-saving attribute and some prefer Iriz for the chassis and handling. Appreciate if you could acknowledge the choice the I have made.
