Hi Mike, returning to the bench after nearly a year away. Used your video as a nice prompt, i'm currently in the process of rebuilding my 5606 LM. After it stopped suddenly. Found a splintered piece of jewel stuck to the underside of the train wheel bridge. So an easy fix. Those little springs though!! 😬
Mike, this is just a quick message of good wishes and thanks. I have had your diagnosis and progress at the back of my mind and just wanted to make sure you are making good progress. You took a very brave decision to share your diagnosis, and subsequent treatment with us. I know you will have helped many guys get tested, and quietly saved a few lives. Not many have the guts to do this, and we all owe you a massive vote of thanks for doing this. Be well and keep shouting the message! Secondly, I find myself referring back to your clear, straightforwardly made instruction videos again, and again. Most watch tinkerers, more experienced and capable than I may not need these as much as I do, but I don't think I'm the only blundering oaf in the world, who you have helped enormously. So the second bit of thanks is for your patience, video editing, time and expertise in helping me, and thousands like me, to have fun and improve our watch techniques. Very many thanks!
Nice summary, I can't believe you've never been into a 5606 movement before! The oiling of the auto mechanism reverser wheel is a bit of a faff - that said the tech sheet does provide some great info and pictures on it.
Mike i agree the 5606 is a fun movement to work on. I have worked on 2 older versions of this movement (older versions have no plastic parts, even the quick-set star is metal). I do have one tip though. Be careful with the large driving wheel and pinion. the friction fit pinion is what transmits the power to the motion works and calendar system. if any dust or metal shavings get in between the driving wheel shaft and the pinion during cleaning and oiling, it will get so stiff that if you try to use the key-less works it can break the teeth off of the first gear on the setting wheel lever. I did this with the first one i worked on. make sure you test the pinion on the large driving wheel after you oil the pinion to make sure it spins freely and does not feel to stiff before reinstalling it in the movement. Hope this helps.
Great video. I've been waiting for you to do a 5606 movement, its a very interesting movement to work on I think, I've serviced some of this as I have 7 LM watches. Its not as complex as it seems at first, and its a very well built movement. Seiko has two more versions of the 56xx movement, a 5626 that is a Seiko KS and a 5646 thet is a Seiko GS, both these is nearly identical to the 5606, the main differense is more jewels. I'm looking foreward to your video of the rebuild of this.
Thanks for sharing this one. I've not seen this movement in person, so seeing it disassembled was neat. It certainly looks more complicated than I was expecting. Cheers!
Nice Mike I just got a Tissot visdate seastar and found donor movement the next day with all the parts i need 😃Hoping this goes better that that Certina I was doing and that Rotary 😂
Well done for a "first timer". I tend to get rid of the balance a soon as I can and if you pull the crown to time setting, it releases tension to the spring and it is easy to remove. And yes, remove as quick as possible because it is an easy flyer. For the spring under the minute wheel. Push the spring little bit back and then remove the wheel. This way you also prevent it to join any space programs.
Would very much enjoy seeing reassembly of this watch if you can conveniently produce such a video. I'm no watch repairer, but watch these videos engrossed anyhow. Even I could see that these works had unusual and complex components. I hope all goes well when you reassemble and (at least partially) refinish the watch.
Even though you said at the outset that hack lever spring didn't fly out, I couldn't even breathe watching you probe all over the lever without securing it.
Great short video, Mike. Still can’t work out why that setting wheel lever with the 2 captive wheels launched…. Oh… and the setting lever itself has a little axle which is removable. It may pop out during cleaning so look out for it. All the best, mate.
I literally bought a "for parts or repair" 5606 Lord Matic with TV screen dial about 2 days ago. I already have a working linnen dial LM and thought I would take my chance on the TV dial to try to fix it. Please make a video when you decide to clean/assemble this watch again!
I took it apart today. 2 parts from the keyless works have a tiny bit of rust. The rest looks okay under my loupe (I don't have a microscope yet). This is only my 2nd watch I'm trying to clean/repair. The balance hairspring looks fine, nice concentric circles. However it sticks to the cock on one side when installed. I mounted it back to the main plate and tried to demagnetise with one of those cheap blue demagnetisers that are all over eBay and AliExpress. Didn't help unfortunately.
@MyRetroWatches - So I'm watching an illegal US stream of WILTY last night... cocked my head- "Is that...?" Then Lee Mack read his card. Called my wife in- excitedly pointed out what was going on and got the reply "Neat". So consider yourself "neat". You did great, looked relaxed.
@@MyRetroWatches Great feather in your cap- I mean- Mack called you, meanwhile, Roger W. Smith is still waiting for the WILTY call in his lonely shop on the Isle of Man.
My god I hope you went straight down the betting shop after you saved that hack lever spring!😂 Fitting it back in is easy if you do it after fitting the train bridge btw 👍
Will send you an email at some point so we can talk about my 6106, it ran all nite through the nite up until 3pm today then just stopped lol Just nudged it and off it goes again /sigh
I mention at the beginning and the end that the assembly may be filmed but I do not know when, I literally took this watch apart last night. Was not meant to be a proper video for the channel
I wouldn’t say that. It’s typical Seiko but this is a mid level movement of the time offering what we take for granted now, hacking and hand wind. They run beautifully.

Thanks for posting Mike. Love to see this one restored.
thanks for this, always good to see assembly/strip downs for new movement types

Overseas Brit here, watching WILTY at the gym very nearly fell off the elliptical this morning when I saw you come on screen😮
Haha great stuff. Was so much fun to make that episode
Just picked one of these LMs up myself. Perfect timing and great heads up on the springs
I see you are a super star now after you tv appearance😎
Nice one Mike. I like this. Sure, a restoration and rebuilding would be a great video or two.
Thanks!
I like these shorter individual disassembly/assembly videos. Please do an assembly of this one when you have time.
Thank you I am pleased you liked this format.

I will be working off the sheet (loosely) when the rebuild comes.
This is much more different than the other Seiko movements of the time than I expected. Cheers for the breakdown video Mike 👍
It’s the next tier up Endy. Better movement and models the LM so I higher purchase price when they were made

For the first time ever, I actually believed Lee Mack.
Haha!!
Oddly, my wife didn't believe me when I said, that's Michael, I follow him and he does watch stuff on TH-cam.
Excellent cameo.

They are a better level movement from that era , next ones up are King Seiko which I’ve already worked on and few other variations.
Nice Mike I just got a Tissot visdate seastar and found donor movement the next day with all the parts i need 😃Hoping this goes better that that Certina I was doing and that Rotary 😂
Love it. Please do the assembly video as well.

A number in each tray also helps with returning the parts to the correct screws after cleaning them....

It will be filmed for sure I just have some other projects in production too so might be finishing them before this one.
Great video Mike as always. Many thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks 👍

Beautiful work Mike. Very complicated movement.
Rebuild is going to be fun!!

Hi Simon. Now you know why I asked you. Very strange flying part.
The setting lever pin thing I found when turning the movement over as it dropped out
Great work, interesting movement. Keep safe buddy
Thanks, you too!

Thanks . I will. I have 2 other video in production I want to finish first .
Glad you didn't skip this watch. I think it matches your channel quite well? 🤔
I do get accused of doing to many Seiko …, ironically I have another “iconic” digital seiko coming that might also make the channel

quite complicated for an ordinary day date automatic watch...
That sure seems either badly or overly engineered.....
