- Last week, I attempted to beat this game in Super Mario Maker 2 and some of you guys were pretty mad that I didn't do the original game first. So, here we go, we dust off the good old NES and try to beat Super Mario Bros. without touching a single coin!

Good speedrunners can do the walljump in 8-4 without scrolling the screen. The goomba trick, on the other hand, is something unique to this challenge.
the wall jump is actually quite easy, there's a easier setup that loses little bit of time but its super easy.
you can also walljump in the 8-1 hard part to get past it

@@mario-ti6dk Yes walljump, in smb1 mario check ground for every 16th pixel and mario can sometimes go little bit inside a wall, which means that sometimes you can jump from a wall if you're at a right spot and had a right speed.
there's a setup do this at 8-4.
@@mario-ti6dk If you touch a wall at the exact pixel you can jump from it. It happens each 16 pixels, i.e. at the exact top of the next lower tile. The game thinks you're on ground instead of in the air, so you can jump while you're at that pixel. Not sure if it is a frame perfect trick or you have multiple frames to do it, but speedrunners do it pretty easily in 8-4 at one pipe..

I don’t think people got mad because of it being in SMM2. It’s just that the physics are COMPLETELY different and some moves are inaccessible in the OG. Personally I didn’t care that you used the remakes

@Anthony Klein that's not much of a challenge, more an annoyance than anything. It just makes traversing freeside and flopside take more time

@@AGZhark I was actually a bit disappointed too when I noticed it wasn't the original, and i thought a lot of comments on it was pretty good. I just didn't hate Nico for it and didn't like the ones that really hated it, it was a good video despite the title being a little misleading.

Nice, glad to see Nico went back and did the right way. Sounds like 8-1 was brutal, though. Though, I have to wonder - was this really the original version? If so, that's a LOT of game-overs for that pit. Which, may explain the hours upon hours of work.

I'm glad you went back to the original version of the game to do this challenge, it definitely feels a lot more legitimate this time. Using the goomba for the 8-1 jump was clever, I would have never thought of doing it that way. (Instead I used a pixel perfect and frame perfect wall jump to gain enough height to clear the pit.) Beating the game coinless is a really fun challenge, and I'd highly recommend it for anyone who feels they have mastered the original game.

Ever tried VS Super Mario Bros? That game is similar but different than the og game. It is an arcade machine. It would be interesting to see if it could be done without a coin.
