    I was convinced from two reviews that this lens was not for me because it had questionable AF in low light situations - now with more reviews out it appears that maybe that is not the case. Pairing this lens with the 16-35 GM would make event photography so much easier. And I probably would have less reason to consider the 70-200 GM II. I like the rendering of the old zoom so I could use it with the 1.4x TC for those times when I need more on the longer end.

      I would prefer 12-24 instead of 16-35 because having a small gap is not a problem for me, but extra 4mm are making the difference.

    You are my favorite photographer for portrait 💙. I bought Sony 35mm F1.4 GM after watching you video. Do you think the weight and size of this lens will be a problem for using as travelling lense? In your opinion if you will choose one lense today travelling abroad, will you pick 24-70 f2.8 or 35-150 f2-2.8. Or you still prefer carrying like 2 lenses 35mm and 85mm. I would appreciate for your opinion.

    I just ordered this lens, finally pulled the trigger. I've been shooting with a Sony 85mm 1.8, Samyang 35mm 1.4, and Tamron 24mm 2.8. I know this is a heavy lens, but I will manage just fine. I've had the Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 on a Sony a6000, so i can imagine how this will be on my a7 iii.

    As always, very informative video Julia! I have a question. Currently i'm using the 35mm f1.4 GM, 85mm f1.8 and the Tamron 28-200 for travel. I want to bring one lens on my next big trip and consider replacing the 3 aforementioned lenses for the 35-150. Would you say, at the wide end, the 1.4 vs the 2.0 is a big compromise? I'm sure I won't miss the extra stop at 85mm, and the 50mm of shorter reach compared to the 28-200 is also neglectable for my purposes. I just love the 35mm GM and am hesitant to hand in the compact form and extra stop of light. What would your advice be? Thanks a lot!

    As a wedding photographer I love shooting with the 28-70 f/2.0 RF. This would be way better. I feel like they made this for wedding photographers. I've been rocking debt free for a hot minute. Might have to get this and a A7IV to finally give Sony a proper try. I'm positive if I don't like it, I could sell it after a couple months for minimal loss.

      @@godsinbox I'm not the person you asked, but the reason to consider switching is if it's good enough to let you reduce total lenses needed for the job.
      The RF 28-70 is so good it can convert people who thought of themselves as prime shooters to replace their 24 1.4, 35 1.4, 50 1.2, and 85 1.2/1.4 with just a single lens.
      It's an expensive single lens, but it makes up for replacing multiple lenses. Not just on cost, but weight and amount of gear you need to keep track of, how much space it takes to pack, reduces need to swap lenses out, etc. The sacrifices for being a zoom lens type of person vs sticking to just primes and 70-200 is greatly reduced.
      But if this Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8 is good enough to replace two zooms, both the 28-70 and the 70-200, with just a single lens, that's pretty huge. In terms of cost it's a single $1899 lens replacing $5900 (assuming RF 70-200 at brand new prices for all lenses) That difference in price will probably leave you with extra money after switching systems. But it's really the idea of simplifying tools for the job is what's really appealing. If you have all your bodies and lenses on you, and not have to worry about where to store other lenses in a safe manner that is also easy and quick to access when you need to switch out, that's a freeing thought.
      I don't do enough gigs for that to matter to me to make that kind of switch. But I can see how tempting it would be if I was a wedding photographer doing one or two weddings every weekend. I'm personally hoping Tamron is able to eventually sell lenses for the RF mount and then I'd considering picking this up and selling my 28-70 f2, 24-105 f4, and 70-200 f2.8. The 28-70 is also my go to lens, but I could see myself giving it up for this.

      @@godsinbox I got lucky and punched the 28-70 RF for $2650. I Switched to R5 only last year from owning the 5D Mark IV for 4 years. I got an amazing resale on all my DSLR lenses and bodies and that kept the switch really simple.
      1x R5, 1x R, 28-70 RF, Kept my trusty 135mm EF(got a used adapter), 14-35mm RF and a used 24-105 RF. Resale of all of this, 5 CF express cards, 8 total batteries and I’m looking at switching for a minimal loss and almost a break even. 2x A7IV $5k, this lens $1800, the 14mm GM $1300 for architecture and maybe a used 24mm GM $1100. I’m very fortunate that I have a large base of commercial work using me from a rang of events, internal long form interviews, random mid-small DOP jobs and around 15 weddings a year. The constant overheating of the R5 now that my clients want 4K(I was getting away with 1080p for the longest time, sucks I can’t anymore and I need to stay competitive), the 30 minute stop on recording limits and now that Sony has updated their color science it’s really tough not to give Sony a go.
      It’s really tough switch for me. I’ve been shooting with Canon since the original 5D. I switched from film to digital on that camera! As a 42 year old artist, my friends are definitely giving me a hard time about it. The worst part is, I’ve been a absolute troll to Sony shooters online but that’s old stubborn Dave. I need to drop that energy and enjoy this midlife crisis. 🤓

      @mbvglider 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I recently got an A7 IV and I like both a lot. I also have an R5. They have a lot in common, with great resolution and a control scheme I really like, with lots of video and photo modes fully separated. Generally speaking, I think the A7 IV is better at videos and R5 is better at photos, but that both of them can do well enough at the other that they both feel pretty complete. Objectively, I actually think the A7 IV comes out ever so slightly ahead if you tally up all the advantages. Subjectively, however, the R5 is just so satisfying and premium to use, like I could legit be happy with it for 8-10 years. The A7 IV is a great camera, but it's obvious when you're using it that it's not a flagship. Technically, the R5 isn't a flagship, either, but it seems like Canon went all out. Also, the E mount has amazing third-party glass, but I think the first-party glass is a little underwhelming and confusing at times, and whereas when you use the best RF glass on the R5, it is expensive, but flawless. I plan on getting the 35-150mm f/2-2.8 to be a workhorse to cover everything, but if I really cared, I'd still bring my R5 + 50mm f/1.2 to get the best moments.

      @@mbvglider Yeah, I made the full switch. The R5C felt like a slap in the face. I’m really happy with the A7IV. It’s totally a mini R5 and now having shot with both it’s the clear winner on multiple points. 🍻

    Tamron is part owned by Sony, so there is no surprise that some of their lenses perform well on Sony cameras, for whatever reason. Some of their offerings for Nikon or Canon DSLRs have been less than stellar, sadly, despite very high retail prices. I guess as with any 3rd party offerings these days, the right way of going about it is try before you buy.

    Love this review, as I always do your videos ;-)
    I've been using its older brother, the Tamron 35-150mm f/2.8-4 Di VC OSD for a couple of years now (which, as a matter of fact, I bought right after watching your review on that lens), and I love the focal length. My main use for it has been events and concerts, and a little portrait photography as well. I used mounted on a Nikon D7500 APS-C.
    Now that I bought a Nikon Z6III, I am seriously considering getting this new 35-150mm. The price is kinda hefty however (2000 Euros in The Netherlands). So before I'm gonna spend that kind of money, first I'll be shooting the old one on an FTZ adapter for a while to see if the focal lenght works for me on full-frame as well.

    An interesting experiment in what's possible in lens design but I'm not sure how many people will pull the trigger and buy it due to the weight and cost. You could get more range with two 2.8 zooms and each lens would feel more comfortable on the camera.
    For portraits I want 1.8 or 1.4 lenses. Tamron have shown what's physically possible in lens design without actually beating existing options if you're willing to buy more than one lens to cover the range.

    • @nogerboher5266
      @nogerboher5266 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Technically, a 35-85mm lens is 100% possible to make even at f1.4 since the total range is only 50mm from 35 to 85, however it would not be small and would be the approximately the same size as a 24-70mm f2.8 because of the f1.4 aperture and the end glass element would be huge, similar to the 135mm f1.8... Honestly I have NO IDEA why nobody to this day has ever made a 35-85mm lens, it doesn't even have to be 1.4, it can be 1.8, aperture is not the issue, it's the fact that 35-85mm would cover 90% of the most used focal lengths for 90% of all photography work that can be done without needing a 135mm or longer telephoto or super wide range like 24mm or 16mm. I will be waiting for that 35-85mm until I die...

    I found this lens to have a major focussing flaw.. back focus when shooting moving objects in low light situations. I shoot dance competitions and when the dancers are near the audience the focus finds the audience faces and goes from the dancers. Using lock on tracking wide with sticky 0 and it still jumps on my A9 with v6 update. A firmware update needed for sure!

    • @mjphotos
      @mjphotos 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Update: I have changed focussing methods to use the tracking flexible spot and no longer the zone so if i am quick enough it captures the correct eyes out of a sea of them in the audience. Definitely pushing this to the max and it now delivers even more razor sharp images.

I just got the lens and love it and need to do personal comparisons as well. I’m considering selling my 35 f1.4 and 85 f1.8 but not sure if I’ll miss those big apertures or not (yet).

    • @kanaheiusagi
      @kanaheiusagi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I have both the 35-150 and 35GM, for me personally, I haven't found myself switching in between the 35-150 and 35GM just for the extra stop (although the 35GM is still sharper, the Tamron is sharp enough at 35mm f2.8 under real-world situations), but I did find myself switching between the 50GM and the 35-150 for its beautiful bokeh and under very low light situations.
      I've been using the 35GM when I just want a lightweight setup, one-handed operation and/or indoors, where I know I wouldn't need the extra reach that the 35-150 provides. Personally, I think the two lens combo of 35-150 + 50GM goes really well together, while the 35GM is great lightweight versatile lens on its own.

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I love the response you got to this question! I think it's a great summary of the GM 35 being good when you want a small, light weight setup.
      From my perspective, I always prefer primes for my professional work - I just work better on a prime personally haha. But during the day shooting weddings I'm usually at f2 the whole time anyway, and I only step down to wide open when it's time to shoot in low light. So yes I think f2 is completely fine and usable for pro work! For my portrait work, I do like having f1.4 available for the "dreamy" look like I was mentioning in this video though :)

      Yeah, I love how versatile 35GM is too, so I'm actually fine with the Tamron starting at 35, if I need wider I could always switch to a 17-28 or just use my iPhone for the critical moments. But anything longer, may often be lost when changing lenses, like the funny espressions of my dog sprinting across the park using the 150mm end, while I'm taking wide shots of the scenery.
      I definitely think you should consider it as a travel lens, the weight is less of a burden on a strap and not constantly holding it (using it on a capture clip + slide lite hack, credits to Dunna did it) than hand holding it continously for a portrait session

      @MARAMARAMARA83150 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kanaheiusagi Thabks! I read your last comments. I have a capture clip and slide strap, which is my reasoning for why the weight won’t matter. I am curious what the Dunna “hack” is? Is it just using that gear, or is there a special trick to using that gear?

    • @kanaheiusagi
      @kanaheiusagi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its a really convenient way to use the capture clip on a camera strap without having to deal with the pd loops hanging off the camera and a much quicker quick release method, which it encourages me to put the camera back on the strap/captureclip more, so there's less fatigue from holding the camera for too long.
