Today we'll be taking a look at the new Sony GM 70-200mm f2.8 mark ii for photography on the A7R4 and video on the A7sIII. I have some eye AF tests to share with you in both photo and video, a studio portrait photoshoot to check out the image quality and sharpness of this lens at all the focal lengths. I also take some outdoor photos to see what the 70-200mm f2.8 mkii looks like in natural light, see the bokeh, lens flare and chromatic aberrations. AND I also try it out with the compatible 2x teleconverter for some wildlife photography. Let me know what you think of this review! Trying out a new format where we take a more critical look at gear but still in a fun and practical way :)

@@juliatrotti i think it is too big for hiking and carrying around everyday if you are not living from this lens, still with the reduced weight it is still too big in size. and my only problem is that the sony teleconverters only work with this 2.8 lens not with the 70-300 and 70-200 f4 sad

I just got this lens a couple of months ago and just used it for a 25 person headshot job instead of my usual 85 1.8. Excellent results.
This is the best camera equipment you can have for DSLR. Wanting to get this combo later
I'm not really a portrait shooter, but as an a7RIV/a7RIII owner, it's nice to see how it performs on a camera that's not the a1.

I was shocked by the absurdity of sharpness. Hardly to see photographers using the 70-200 in studio. I was delighted. Unfortunately here in Brazil the equipment arrives in stores with a very high price.

Julia. A little tip about shooting birds in the water. Get your camera to floor level. You will get amazing bokeh orbs surrounding your subject depending on the light.

Could you perhaps do a quick comparison of the 135gm and this lens. See if you think the flexibility of the zoom could be worth it if the image quality is comparable.

Thank you so much, that makes me so happy to hear!! I really wanted to try mirrorless because of the size and weight and at the time Canon were saying they weren't going to make mirrorless cameras at all.. so I tried out the Sony A7III, loved it and bought it. The other reason is the sheer amount of lens options for Sony haha both native and third party. While I mostly do portrait/wedding photography for work, for myself I also do travel photography, vlogging, etc so there's an option for everything I need and it's usually small and light weight as well :)
@@juliatrotti Thanks so much for your detailed response. I cant help but me drawn in my the mirrorless setups and so many of my fellow photographers and swapping to sony or canon mirrorless. But having only owned my 5D MARK IV for about 12 months, seems far to expensive too swap haha

Can you share what tripod plate you used on the lens collar? I have this lens and need to buy an arca swiss plate so I can use the lens mounted on a tripod and didn't see it in your gear list and would love to know of a good option. Thanks!
Lovely Video Julia. I own an A7iii. If I was owning a new Gen body like the A7R4 or the A1 this we be in my top list. Since I own an old body now I am confused between the 70-200 Gen1 and Gen2 now. Would love to see a comparison video :)
Thank you! I think Manny posted a comparison video as well if you wanted to check that out too :) Sydney was in lockdown while I had this lens so I couldn't do as many shoots as I wanted with it.. I'll see if I can get it again in the future to make some comparisons!
Why?! You forced me to sell the old version and now I can't find the new version anywhere! lol. Since my early days with Canon I have always been a 70-200 shooter. I got a beautiful GM 85 1.4 that is amazing, but I can't wait to get my 70-200 back. It is the portrait KING IMO, and I have referred to every version I have ever owned as my "Magic lens".
I think it is vaporware. No one has it in stock here in Canada, lol.

Nice lens from Sony ! I wonder if the Canon EF 200mm f/2.8L USM will be on your list for review some day ? I think this lens worth a review because mostly unnoticed , but absolutely efficient and well suit for wedding photo. For very very reasonable price tag, I think it definitely deserve a review.
200mm without option to zoom out is not very versatile. That's very restrictive to creativity

You have Tamron 70-180mm F2.8, which I consider to be the better option compare to the mk i.
Go for the Tamron 70-180 2.8. Its cost under 1000€/$ - weights 810g - auto focus is perfekt... its in my opinion the best choice ;)

My shirt is super old so I don't think they'd have it anymore. Sonali's dress I got recently... I feel really guilty about it because i know it's not sustainable 😫 but I HAD to get it when I saw it, it's from shein. I think it was called puffy dress or ruffle dress!

This is the A7 R IV - the a74 had those features from release.

If you’re paying full price for both (or financing them) then the new one is a no brainer. It is better in every way and it is barely more expensive
The new one is scheduled to be available for sale in December, and I imagine that supplies may be limited.
Ahh I hate it when that happens! I didn't get the chance to, but you can check out Tony & Chelsea and Manny's videos, they compared this lens to the mark 1 version. Also the dates it's available differs a lot depending where you are, in Australia it says it will be shipping early/mid November. And thank you, glad you enjoyed the video!
thanks to all of you for the feedback :D im from germany. i check those videos and then i decide what i do. problem is that i have a shooting end of this month and i want to use a 70-200 2.8 for that. its just my hobby so i dont make any money with this so i cant get the rental back if i renting this lens. but thanks again and have a nice weekend :D

I have the R4 and Tamron 70-180mm F2.8, it was a great purchase at the time when the Tamron 70-180 mm F2.8 is a great option to Sony 70-200 mm Mk1, now the equation really changes with this one. I don't like to carry white lenses, why don't they release 1 with black colour?
Your most likely not going to see this but great real life review as always that’s what made me subscribe to your channel ( which by the way should be way bigger than just 533 k.Right?). It’s not a cheap lens but then it’s a top pro lens you get the best you pay the price.

Thank you! The backdrop is from Spectrum and the colour is To Chai For Beige. But to be honest, the paper quality is not my favourite. I prefer Savage and Superior paper rolls.

I don't have any insider info, but it looks like they are focusing on their GM line at the moment. Maybe afterwards they will focus more on their other lenses too I hope!

It's made up of 2 parts, it's a tough 11" friction arm and a smallrig super clamp!
