7:40 ... use of walls, fences, street lights, in general anything that the model can lean or sit on, or interact in any way, helps a lot. You go from "I have no idea what to do with myself" to situation which is known and safe, and takes model mind from "shit I'm being photographed" to performing some simple tasks :D
Haha I completely agree, standing out in the middle of nowhere with nothing to lean on/sit on/hold can feel very awkward so I love using my surroundings to help people feel more comfortable!
This is awesome! Thank you so much for the tips, there are a few of them I'm definitely gonna try on my next photoshoot. Just out of curiosity, how many pictures do you deliver to your clients when they ask for a portrait photoshoot?
thank you for this!! i’m always insecure about posing people (i’m still really starting out with shooting others so i’m only shooting my friends) but these are such great and easy tips to follow!
Your tips on posing is really great! I especially appreciate your videos about posing "non models". However, in this video, and also in other videos, I find the poses work great for pretty young girls and fashion style photography. But, what if your model is a older person, say in her 40s or 50s? (Many of my friends are ;)) I guess that would require more natural and calmer poses. I would love to see how you would direct and pose her.
Thank you so much! And yes I agree, that the posing I do is more suited for younger clients and you could do similar with a more mature subject and just tone it all down and bring it back a little. I think with these videos I show that creating movement with your subject is key in making them feel comfortable and creating natural looking poses for your photoshoots regardless of age, rather than finding a pose online and getting them to copy it with which a non-model usually ends up looking quite stiff and unnatural! Thanks for the suggestion though, I will see if I can make a video about this :)
@@juliatrotti Thank you for the advice. I will bear those tips in mind! Looking forward to more posing videos. I find aperture, focus, bokeh and all is comparily easy to master :)
Wow, your videos are all so helpful! Thank you so much! I have a question about your lightroom presets. I bought one of them as somehow I can't use the intensity regulator in lightroom. I wonder if that is normal, cause with all my other presets it works...?! Anyhow I am a huge fan of your work and learned sooo much from you! Thank you and best wishes from Bavaria, Germany 💐
Hi Julia, first of all I want to congratulate for the quality stuff you publish. Keep posting such great video! I would like to ask you a technical question: it seems to me that the unedited images are a little underexposed. Is this done intentionally to avoid blown out details? I'm learning portrait photography and if I'd set up the camera, I would have compensated the exposure a stop or two higher. If you could share this information, it could help me understand your technique and learn something from a professional. The final results are simply great, however! ;-)
Thank you so much, I appreciate it! Yes I usually like to underexpose my images slightly for 2 reasons. The first one is I just personally like editing from a darker photo and pushing the shadows + exposure up, I especially like doing this around blue hour in the last set of photos against the white fence with the jasmine flowers, I'm not sure how to explain/word it properly but it almost gives me a flatter looking image when I push the exposure up in post that I find looks really pleasing. The main reason though it that I am usually exposing for the brightest part of the image to make sure nothing is over (as much as I can without underexposing everything else too much - so a balance between the two). I find saving the shadows is a lot easier to do with my raws that saving blown out spots in photos. For example in the first set I was exposing for the white top which would have been blown out if I had exposed for her face or more of the background instead. Then when we were shooting against the shorter fence with the tilting your head tip, I was exposing for the brightest part of her skin that the light was hitting to make sure there would still be texture/detail in that area when I went to edit the photos. I hope that helps!
@@juliatrotti it does help a lot! I agree with your considerations and looking again at the video keeping this in mind makes a big difference. I always struggle to tradeoff between the face and background exposure and I like a lot your approach. I will keep your answer as a reference for my future sessions (expecially for my daughter portraits ;-) ). I must admit I wasn't expecting such a detailed and complete answer. I really appreciate it, and this confirms how much you love photography and your work. Thanks a lot! Keep working like this.
@Julia Trotti Posing advices ok. Editing maybe a little bit meh... 2:00 her face is too shiny whilst her arms are not. Draws attention - yes but her Shirt is too bright and always pulls the view onto it - away from her face. Maybe brighten up the background so the difference in contrast gets less. Also... get in front of a light background so her hair doesn't drown in the background.
Hey Julia, always love your your videos. Could you please do one on posing "non model" clients or focussing on angles for regular people who might not be super confident about their bodies. How can we highlight their best features instead of trying to hide ANY of it..
Thank you so much! I have 2 on my channel as someone mentioned, one with my sister and one with Dan's cousin as well, I'm pretty sure they are the 2 most popular vids so they should be easy to find 😄 I hope you enjoy!
Great posing tips! What is the thing under the lens, and what are the USB cables for? I was surprised to see you using a 35mm lens for all of the portraits, but it did give pleasing results, except for the closest shots, where I think it exaggerated the nose and gave the typical wide-angle distortion of faces. I'm curious why you didn't use a longer lens. We always see fancy lighting setups, but you seemed to get good shots without even so much as a reflector.
Thank you so much! It's a wifi recorder to be able to share what I see on the live view while I'm taking photos. The cables are a little clunky but I really love sharing the screen so it's worth it haha. And yeah I really love using a 35 for portraits, it's definitely a little unconventional but I love the look! I guess I didn't change my lens due to time constraints while filming this video, I just wanted a couple of quick closeup shots so I kept the 35 on, I know it causes some distortion but like I mentioned I still like what it looks like!
Your photos are amazing and now your contents too as well. Keep up the great work. My question is, I noticed you majorly shoot off from live view any reason as to why?
Thank you so much! I just prefer using the live view on mirrorless, I personally can't really get used to the look of the EVF and in general using live view is better for my posture and I like not having to squint my eyes 🦅 haha
Hi Julia. Hope you are doing well as always. Thank you for sharing all these awesome contents. I've been following you for quite a while. You works are really amazing. I love your interesting angles, color grading and without any doubt beautiful models. So, I tried to analyze very closely and figure out what makes your photos so great. Finally realized something. Your cropping (before and after taking the photo) makes the photos standout. I know it comes naturally after years of shooting. However, I would love to see a dedicated video based on cropping techniques/angles; things that you think matter. Say hi to Den. You are amazing. Thanks in advance.
Thank you so much and thanks for the suggestion! A video about composition in my portraits is something that I always get asked about so I would love to work on that :)

Always excited to see your stuff !!! I asked your suggestion about sonya7iii or canon R to buy for fashion photography and vlog videography. Can you please suggest want to buy this week
Thank you so much! For fashion/weddings/client work I like using the A7III rather than the R because of dual card slots. Not to mention lenses can be more budget friendly with Sony compared to RF lenses which are amazing!! but really pricey. With vlogging though, the flip screen of the R might come in handy. I use the A7III for vlogging as well, after a while you get used to not seeing the back of the screen and you learn where to point the camera, but yeah some pros and cons to think about :)
I believe you are using the eye autofocus on your Sony. That'll help a lot with the amount of movement you are having on the client. I wish i can have my clients do this much movements on my older DSLR with not that many autofocus points bunched mostly in the middle of the frame without having to stop down the lens too much
Yes definitely eye AF and using a mirrorless camera like the A7III definitely makes life a lot easier when it comes to focusing. I have 2 videos on my channel where I share how to focus on a DSLR - it used to be super fun on the Canon 5D2 days when servo modes were not reliable/accurate haha but those videos I made share how I worked around that to be able to capture movement!
Julia how about a submission challenge where we submit our photos in which you select them and edit with your presets? That sorta gives us maybe more of an idea of what pictures could come out as taken from our own environments? :)
When I do live streams I edit your photos, next time I want to use some more of my presets too as I've gotten a few requests for that 😊 I'm currently in the middle of renovating my office but as soon as it's done we're going to start live streaming regularly again!
Thanks! You can try using a wider angle lens like a 35mm which will distort/stretch the image slightly, I find that usually helps make people appear taller. The type of clothing someone is wearing will change how their height appears on camera and also pointing toes, keeping good posture (including stretching out your neck) and depending on the pose such as standing, having one leg closer to the camera can all help!
It's always good to use portrait lenses to avoid distortion in your images. These lenses are 85mm, 70-200mm, 105mm, and 135mm. But to be honest it shouldn't matter if you are using a 24mm, 35mm, or 50mm. 90% of my shoots are done with the Tamron 28-75mm and I have an 85mm lens, and I am sure I shot at 35mm a lot of times. Just focus on learning your camera settings and how to pose your models.
Thank you! Yeah the 35 is definitely a slightly unconventional lens for portrait photography but it's one of the reasons I love it so much! I do also take portraits on more classic portrait lenses such as the 85, but I like the distortion from a 35 :)

When I do live streams I edit your photos, next time I want to use some more of my presets too as I've gotten a few requests for that 😊 I'm currently in the middle of renovating my office but as soon as it's done we're going to start live streaming regularly again!
Super awesome and educational video!
Thank you 🤗
What do u use to record the electronic view finder? Whats the brand?
Love your videos btw 😊 learned alot!
Thank you! It's a cineeye
Always awesome videos!
Cute ❤. Any idea how to shoot people will look taller? But not from lower angle shot
I'm new to taking pics and I was told to avoid portraits with 35mm, but these look so good.
Great tutorial Julia
