  • Is Madeira the Hawaii of Europe? We spent about a week in Funchal, Madeira and had the most magical time. We're sharing where to stay, how to get around, hiking spots, food tours, dolphin tours, and all other things you should do there. We went during the Madeira Flower Festival so we got to enjoy the beauties of that as well. We had the absolute best time and cannot wait to go back!

    Great videos guys! FYI, the hawaiian ukulele was originated from migrants that came from Madeira! Developed in the 1880s, the ukulele is based on several small, guitar-like instruments of Portuguese origin, the machete, cavaquinho and rajao , introduced to the Hawaiian Islands by Portuguese immigrants from Madeira, the Azores and Cape Verde. Three immigrants in particular, Madeiran cabinet makers Manuel Nunes, José do Espírito Santo, and Augusto Dias, are generally credited as the first ukulele makers. Two weeks after they disembarked from the SS in late August 1879, the Hawaiian Gazette reported that "Madeira Islanders recently arrived here, have been delighting the people with nightly street concerts." BTW, 100 euros/ day for the rental car is crazy! Did you check different places? Well, of course, it depends on each person's necessities.

    40 years ago I toured Madeira. It was so memorable. A fantastic experience was hiking along the levadas into the rural areas surrounded by Eucalyptus trees. We hired a driver to go to the dark and rainy side of the island. We went from sunshine to mountaintops where we were surrounded by clouds.

      Madeira north side may looks like Hawaii the same with Azores Islands, but it's just that, everything else is different. Madeirans travel to Hawaii to teach how to cultivate the sugar cane, the ukulele instrument was also brought by Madeirans too (In Madeira have a different name braguinha) check here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portuguese_immigration_to_Hawaii

    • @desertdweller8520
      @desertdweller8520 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I've been to both places and lived in Hawaii. So I can sum it up this way. Madeira is cooler, fewer bugs, closer to the mainland of Portugal, European vs. Polynesian, much more affordable, welcoming to people from the US vs ambivalence about US mainlanders. Both places are incredibly beautiful. Hawaii is more lush with warmer ocean water. I'm moving to Madeira in 2023! I won my heart.

    Absolutely agree, calling Aveiro the Venice of Portugal is a stupidity... whoever came up with that idea has never been to Venice - to brand a place using some other place’s name is a recipe for disappointment. Fortunately Madeira usually calls itself the Pearl of the Atlantic or the Garden of the Atlantic, which is a good and justifiable calling card.

    Hey my Home for the last 18 years! Glad to finally seeing it known for reasons other than CR7. To be fair, to truly know Madeira you definitely need a car, hanging around in funchal does not do justice to its beauty but that said yeah that rental car was expensive but at the same time a taxi can charge you half of that just to take you to the airport or to Funchal (15 minutes drive) and there isn't any other alternative as they fought hard to get rid of uber for not ripping out tourist. Next time you come make sure you visit Fanal, since you loved Arieiro, you won't be dissapointed.

    • @pdskill
      @pdskill ปีที่แล้ว

      Bolt is the alternative, altough limited in the amount of cars (reason that uber left) It's still better then taxi.

      @TonyRodrigues63 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@piyalibanerjee8648 October can be as hot as May, it all depends, obviously the chance of rain, and lower temperatures is always there, we don't really have an of season, Madeira Island is a all year round touristic region, shops, restaurants, cafés etc. are open all year round, its more a question of luck with the weather than anything else, rough winters are not a thing, yes, it might be cooler sometimes, but -10/20 etc. not at all.

THE ILAND ITS A MICROCLIMATE MEANS THAT GOING FROM THE COAST TO THE CENTER OR NORTH CLOSE TO THE MOUNTAINS 🏔 YOU WILL SEE DIFERENT TEMPERATURES BUT NOTHING OF TOO COLD OR TOO HOT. I AM FROM MADEIRA AND WHEN I WENT TO UNIVERSITY IN THE MAIN LAND PORTUGAL 🇵🇹 THAT IS SO BEAUTIFUL THE HOSTORIC PLACES, BUT WAS COLD ON WINTER AND HOT IN SUMMER BUT IS MORE AT NORTH OR GETTING OUT OF THE COAST. As festas de final de ano são maravilhosas, a queima de fogos no réveillon são fantásticas, há muita música e os enfeites são Natal é um espetáculo à parte. Portuguese subscriber here. Madeira is always on my list...the island offers some of the best, scenic, 'atmospheric' hiking trails anywhere in Europe (the countless 'Levadas', of course). You really have to hike to Caldeirão Verde, Rabaçal and so on. But the best of the best, IMHO, is the hike between Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo. It's a bit strenuous but it is truly breathtaking. Next time, don't miss out on that one. Get yourself into good shape, put on your 'adventure boots' and go hike well above the clouds. After such a hike, you can eat all of the 'pão de caco' available across Madeira with no guilt. Just pleasure. Take care

    Nice....except that The Cliff Bay Hotel is located in the touristy part of town versus downtown or the port/old town historical area. It is also incredibly expensive (Five Star Hotel) and houses a Michelin Two Star Restaurant. It is on par with The Savoy down the street. Bizarre that you would stay at a very high rnd hotel and eat at its restaurant (pricey) and then advise that rental cars are expensive. Important to let folka know that while your hotel choice was among the priciest in the area, there are lots of other options for different budgets so that folks know maybe.....

    • @HoneymoonAlways

      For us it is about the value you get for the cost. While the Cliff Bay or Savoy are expensive, they are worth the money and we expect them to be expensive as a luxury resort. At the same time a small rental car for over $100 is not not a great value. For example I just paid about $33 a day for a rental car in Lisbon.

    Hawaii of Europe ? Hawaii was invaded by the USA, Madeira was discovered! Anyway that's all history. Madeira is fantastic, although landing when its windy is scary :)!

    If Madeira is the Hawaii of Europe then what about all the other tropical colonies Europe controls? For example, British Virgin Islands, Azores, French Polynesia, Reunion Islands etc?

      it was the property of Charles Murray, an english consul, who had been all over the world and decorated the garden as he saw fit. most of the plants were added after the property changed hands but some of the deco remained

      Yes, normally you can find those prices, but we searched for a rental car and chose the cheapest option. Right now they are very expensive everywhere.

    Madeirans are very far from a progressive, tolerant society and are very attached to an old, very backwards, uneducated way of living but the island has great infrastructure, absurd natural beauty and much dignity. It's diametrically opposite to mainland Portugal.
