    Really appreciate you 'carried on' despite it being an horrendous piece of wood.
    As a 'newbie' I've had many mishaps so far but seeing how you carried on regardless has inspired me to keep going. Thanks.

      Oh it was a 🥴 piece of wood and I’ve ran into many similar pieces, after years of turning and learning there is always a way around things to make the best out of what you have, stabilizing and casting are a couple of things worth looking into if you run into similar wood.
      Thanks for watching and keep turning

      This is a very old video, the wood was punky and my turning technique not as good as it is now, thankfully I’ve improved over the years

    I'm actually glad you had so many problems with the Birch, it makes me feel less bad about how poorly my experience with it has gone. Back to spruce, I guess, and decreasing my tools every day... Thanks for the video, nice work on the goblet!

      Spruce? Isn't that too soft?
      I love punky wood with figure, but it is a challenge, a lot of it comes down to the 100 grit gouge 😎. I am actually overwhelmed at the responses to this particular project

    Being new to woodturning, I appreciate your example of following-through after problems. Poor wood, rim uneven, broken rings, etc. and you finished it!
    And it looks good.

      It doesn't always go as planned, but it's a learning curve dealing with different materials, density of wood, tooling, etc

    Nice goblet Rob! the silver birch looks very nice, shame about the rings but these things happen. I haven't tried silver birch yet but have earmarked one to take down next year .Great video and thanks for sharing .Have a great Christmas, Bram.

    First off, let me say that I enjoy all of your videos and I have had the opportunity to learn a thing or two from you. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! From the condition of the wood you were turning, I think your goblet turned out great. I was thinking as I was watching that maybe a gouge would have reduced the tare out a little bit? From my experience using carbide cutters I find that I get a better cut with a gouge. Just the opinion of a novice wood turner here that's been turning for only 4 years now.

    • @WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning
      @WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bob, you've been turning longer than I have, I've only been turning 2 1/2 years but had the opportunity of watching my dad turn wood as a child growing up.
      I agree with your comment, a bowl gouge may have reduced tear out significantly, I went through a phase of only using carbide as I was terrible at sharpening my tools.

    Hi
    just a thought if you try using a spindle gouge or a bowl gouge instead of a carbide scraper you might not get as much tear out as you got with this but saying that you finished off very well
    have fun and safe turning Ian

    • @WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning
      @WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ian,
      Very possible, I'll maybe do a box with the left over piece and use my gouges, but you saw even with my beading tool how punky the wood is so I still doubt it would make much difference riding a bevel, we will see, thanks for watching.
      Cheers now

    Just a bit of friendly advice: learn to use a skew and a gouge and stop using a carbide scraper for all of your cuts and you will see a dramatic difference in tear out. Scrapers RIP the fibers out of the wood instead of cutting them. Don't get me wrong, scrapers have their place but, at a minimum, try using a rouging gouge to get the wood to a cylinder instead of tearing it up with that scraper. Good luck!
    Also, you will find that turning is much more enjoyable when you learn to actually shear the wood, scraping is tedious and boring and it will make turning uninteresting eventually!

  • @PaulLockwood

    Looks nice with the end finish. Would steel tools so that you can run on the bevel have worked better rather than carbide which is basically a scraper? I had a very flaky piece I used for my first captive ring and turning the outside used a skew which produced a very good finish, mainly because of running on the bevel. Still needed a lot of sanding though.

      I went through a phase of living carbide for everything I turned, I've since returned to mostly traditional tools.
      I'm not sure if bevel contact would have made this any better as the wood was very punky.

    Nice looking goblet Rob....looks better without the rings anyway ;).
    In seriousness though, I would venture to say the reason they exploded was the "punky" wood, your technique seemed to be spot on to me....but then again....what the hell do I know eh?

    Good go, love the rings, I know you have to be a rich bastard in order to see them, so of course I do!! ;) I hate working with punky wood and would avoid doing so if I could help it, I mean, if it's just a little punky I'll work around it, but a piece like yours? fire place fodder... good job on making something pretty out of it!

      @WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yuval, I knew someone would appreciate my captured rings on this 😬 punky can be a pain to work with but I felt I had to finish it. I'm happy I did as it is a gift.

      Also when you have a supply of olive wood like you do pppfff, you lucky fella. How is it like to turn green? I can only get very dry olive and I find it brittle.

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Woodslee Summercraft Well, turning green Olive is pretty much the best, it's extremely dense, yet cuts softly (so long long streamers happen all the time), problem is some of the Olive I find (and all my wood is found wood, except for things people send me) is quite dry, but far from brittle, more like fire hardened, I'm talking about stone hard, sharpening every 5 minutes hard, so yeah, it can go both ways...

    Hey Rob.
    Just came across your video. Nice job with difficult wood. I too have to balance the difficulty of using spalted wood and how nice it can look.
    Wondering what the final finish was that you used since it would need to be food grade safe to drink liquids from. Did you use mineral oil...maybe mixed with a beeswax or similar? Or do you subscribe to the opinion I hear frequently that any distillates will eventually evaporate out, like the denatured alcohol in shellac?
    Cheers
    Elliot

    • @WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning
      @WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ah the foodsafe debate, lol who wants to go there, most of my work is for ornamental purposes only, unless someone wants specifically to use for food, i have found that most foodsafe finishes are not as durable and require re application, you could always apply beeswax over any finish to be sure.
      this video surprises me at how many times it has been watched, it was a difficult turn with such wood, i have tried different methods to stabilize wood over the years.

    • @WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning
      @WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tom
      Firstly this is a very old video, I like to think my techniques have improved since turning this.
      To answer your question I highly recommend multiple coats of thin ca super glue to seal the wood for liquids, it will be food safe when cured, tasteless and odourless.

      Hi tom, I thought about that, but I already lost some of the rim trying just that prior to sanding, the way I see it, you have to decide when to stop, so I did, I personally don't mind minor imperfections, these are one of a kind items.

      Please explain ' mandrin ' I am not familiar. My current lathe is made by king Canada, and all parts are the same as the mastercraft lathe, check out this site for parts and service
      I had to replace the lovejoy pulleys on my mastercraft lathe and the variable speed arm, not too expensive.
      Find a retailer that deals with king Canada, I hope this info helps,
      www.kingcanada.com/detail/14-x-43-variable-speed-wood-lathe-with-digital-readout/852
      If you want to email me more info, photos or questions I'd be happy to help, maybe I can get the parts you are looking for.
