    I hadn't turned anything in over three years, and found myself once again watching your videos to regain my confidence. Thanks again Mike. Starting another lidded box tomorrow morning.

    Thank you so much for live speed examples. All the high-speed footage everyone does makes it look like you can move so much faster than you actually can. It's much easier to learn when someone such as yourself gives us the instruction at actual speed of cut.
    Also, is it just me, or does anyone else blow at the screen trying to clear the chips and dust? I just realized I was doing it and it made me wonder.

    • @MikeWaldt
      @MikeWaldt  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Thomas, I am guilty of fast speed videos when turning a piece, but not with what I would call a tutorial, such as this. As far as the blowing the dust away ... I really don't know about other people .. but I know I do! ;)

    I bought my first lathe 2 weeks ago. I have been watching videos constantly to learn, and you are one of the best teachers! I am concentrating on the correct tools, sharpening methods, and presenting the chisel to the wood properly, of course safety first! I bought a 10x18 lathe, face shield, 8 piece harbor freight lathe HSS chisel set ($65. U.S., inexpensive, but I want to learn to sharpen correctly with this set), and a really good chuck, a Nova Precision Midi.I also bought a Rockler full size round carbide tool ($75 on sale! LOL). My first project was a spindle, creating various cuts. Second project, I made a wooden hammer. Third project was a pencil cup. I really enjoy turning, and videos like yours help us beginners to see how things are done RIGHT. I bought a Wolverine grinding system with a Vari-grind jig. That gets here tomorrow. No more turning until I sharpen these tools. (I bought the carbide tool to keep going, LOL). Looking forward to the explanation between the spindle and bowl gouges!
    Thanks again! ~Rusty

    Love the tutorials. I have started turning on a low end lathe and find I use a combination of the carbide tipped and standard HSS tools. Another great tutorial Mike, just what the doctor ordered for this beginner! only yesterday I tried hollowing out end grain on a glued up blank of segmented stathes similar to one of your earlier videos, and got into a real right mess to the point where I must admit I became disheartened, however you've just helped regain my confidence! I'm sure the RIGHT tool and the RIGHT way will now give me better results - I ain't giving up !! so thank you again for another video into my tutorial folder, cheers, Tony (from uk)

    Great informative video Mike, I don't particularly like end grain hollowing but some projects require it, I'm teaching a class this weekend to turn a captive ring goblet and hollowing end grain is the part I'm dreading beginners doing..
    last thing I want them to do is get a catch and throw the blank across the floor 😬

    Great demo Mike! I liked the way you showed the position of the various tools you used. I'm making some small birdhouses, I'll have to give a couple of those methods a try. Well except for the Forstner bit, that's what I'm using now. Cheers, Rich

    Good, helpful advice and tips, Mike. I can see this helping lots of turners. My preference is for spindle gouges - I've not had much success with carbide yet, but I haven't tried my Simon Hope 6mm carbide tool yet (only bought it in September...sigh...). Cheers!

    Yes , that is the better way , as a woodturner I use a bowl gouge cutting towards the center against the grain , here the spindle gouge works along the grain , in a softer , more efficient and less stressful way for the chuck , I do it also with other tools in the end but the spindle gouge allows you to do all the work down to the end , well , I'll try it although I'm a bit scared...thank you !

    • @nathanrichard835
      @nathanrichard835 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm just learning to do this, I can do the outside cuts beautifully but every time I try to hollow out it just chatters and vibrates so bad the wood piece comes out of the chuck and flies across the room. I fell as though I'm missing something very simple but also very important.

    Nice one Mike. I liked particularly the positioning of the gouge when hollowing, It was 'understandable' (if that is the right expression). I have seen lots of similar vids but the demonstrators go so fast and you don't see clearly what part of the gouge they are starting with and revolving into the cut. I think similay close up vids would be most useful for newbies and not just for gouges, Thanks and hope you will do more similar. Oh by the way, you used a spindle gouge rather than a bowl gouge. I think viewers would like to understand the differences in each type?

    • @MikeWaldt
      @MikeWaldt  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks George, appreciate it, and am glad you found the video of some use. I will try and remember to explain the difference between a spindle and bowl gouge in a future video.

    • @MikeWaldt
      @MikeWaldt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could use a 3/8" bowl gouge or a carbide mini hollower, in fact a HSS hollower too Guy.
