In our local library I found a wood turners book with one chapter dealing with the difference between scraping and shaving. Being a self taught turner for over forty years, I read it and learned a lot. I watched you scrape with your skew and shave with your gouge. Life is full of lessons.. Loved your lidded bowl. As CAPT. EDDY says " making shavings" . Life is good ! Keep on turning. Paul

not a box. a bottle, maybe a round container, but sure NOT A BOX. box is square, triagle or rectangle, surely not round. most pills are put in bottles, not squares or rectangles. i guess you made a small mistake? most pills i get are put in PLASTIC bottles?

You have nice tools. You need a dust collection of some kind.I use an old tank type sweeper with the hose attached near the turning to catch the dust. I don't worry about the chips because I don't breathe the chips. The dust can be harmful after a time , so try to use some kind of dust collection. Good video and nice project. I enjoyed it a lot.
dread cat Thank you. I just got a bandsaw and the dust collection is next on the list. I do wear a mask, but not always because of the off and on of talking to the camera. It's more of an excuse, but I'm working on it. :)

Here's my positive suggestions ...before you get seriously injured. 1st, use your sliding table (or a spacer from your fence) on your table saw before you get a serious ''Kickback'. 2nd, get a 'Roughing Gouge' to rough the wood to round and save you spindle/bowl gouge...and/or possible injury. 3rd, "Smoking" wood? Wow, sharpen your tools...dull tools will get you injured, also. PS: Sorry this comment is 2 years old, I just stumbled on your video...and hope you haven't been hurt in the mean time.

You've made yourself a beautiful lidded vessel here. Sycamore is nice to turn and even nicer to carve. It's good to see a young man that enjoys turning and didn't turn the presentation into a music video. I'm wondering if this were a 2 part video whether you could have slowed this down to create a dialogue with your audience. On Finish: this vessel is still small enough for Thin CA, then "EEE" followed by Crystal or Shellawax and buffed at speed. There's your high sheen finish, not a gloss per-se, a higher fine sheen. Beautiful work! The beads were a great touch. I turned a very similar box, but I used live wood for the first time. Needless to say, it cracked like crazy lol. Have you ever turned live wood? If so, have you been successful in sealing it to keep it from cracking?
Sometimes I wonder about mounting a router to get the initial rounding of an awkward shaped blank. The router would cut away while the blank is turned by hand. A jig carrying the router mounted on the lathe bed rails would get it straight.
Enjoyed the video! I'm working my way up to using some of the big pieces walnut I've been drying. What kind of mask are you using? I have a problem of it fogging up.
Rustic Moon My mask fogs up as well. I would recommend getting the mask with the whole air filtration system. They are pricey, but everyone I know who has one, recommend it.
It might not be a cold ,, you haven't said anything about dust mask or extraction,, I can't turn yew as it effects my throat and lungs , I don't do spoulted wood unless i'm wearing PRO-AIR, and I don't take it off until I'm outside the workshop, stay safe Regards Alf

Randy Kniebes No. My girl uses it to put her jewelry in and it still looks great. No cracks at all, but you do have to watch with wood. I made an urn in one of my videos and I have noticed some slight shifting of the wood on that.
Nancy Mezick The roughing gouge is more for spindle work. I was worried about a bad catch with a piece the size I started with. Not to mention, I just prefer a bowl gouge most of the time. When used correctly, you can remove a lot of material.
Thanks for leaving in the mistake! I usually feel like a crappy turner watching these videos. It would also be nice to put in a quick note saying every time you sharpen a tool. Nobody seems to show that.

I mean make a jig with a hacksaw blade and as the log turns lower the blade to cut as it is turning. seems like that would be pretty easy and effective. essentially its a bandsaw but instead of the blade turning, the wood is turning
So, CA glue is just a really strong super glue that is almost the consistency of water. Search on eBay for it. I found the best deals in bulk there. Warning, it's sort of pricey for how much you get.
Lawrence lawrence I believe I did. This was a while ago and I think I used wood glue and sanded to fill it. It creates a dust, glue mix which fills. I typically fill it differently now a days.
Mate, have you ever heard of a hand saw? Save your power and your machine. Also, get a heavier table or secure the one you got to the floor. Your skew chisel should not be used a scraper. You can find some excellent instructions on how to use a skew chisel. It takes a lot of practise. Don.t wanna knock you buddy but think of the people who may copy you? Wouldn't you want them shown the correct method?
Peter Wilhelmsson Thank you for the suggestion. I now have a 20" bandsaw to help cut this down and I rarely use those carbides. Knowing what I know now, I wish I would of bought the chainsaw instead of the chisels. Lol. All the same, thank you for the suggestion and watching.

When you use the screw raise the tool rest and keep the angle less than 90 like a scraper.Really like the shape you got there.

Yes you can fill them in with epoxy. As a matter of fact. I'll be doing a video soon where I fill the cracks with a colored epoxy.

Lawrence lawrence I believe I did. This was a while ago and I think I used wood glue and sanded to fill it. It creates a dust, glue mix which fills. I typically fill it differently now a days.

Mate, have you ever heard of a hand saw? Save your power and your machine. Also, get a heavier table or secure the one you got to the floor. Your skew chisel should not be used a scraper. You can find some excellent instructions on how to use a skew chisel. It takes a lot of practise. Don.t wanna knock you buddy but think of the people who may copy you? Wouldn't you want them shown the correct method?

Peter Wilhelmsson Thank you for the suggestion. I now have a 20" bandsaw to help cut this down and I rarely use those carbides. Knowing what I know now, I wish I would of bought the chainsaw instead of the chisels. Lol. All the same, thank you for the suggestion and watching.
