Great video! Love my CT5 Sport, exactly like the one you're reviewing and I am so glad you're addressing the shudder! Absolutely spot on solid review of this car!
I totally agree that the CT5s look way better in person. For whatever reason, I actually prefer the CT4 design. The CT5's were more than what my wife was willing to allow for car payments so I bought a CT4 in November, just he base luxury. Great price 0% financing. I had a little buyers remorse for the first few days because it didn't come with a lot of things my 2016 Nissan Maxima Platinum had, plus the Maxima was faster. The CT4 really grew on me more and more and now I can't take my eyes of it. Great chassis, that alpha platform really is a solid base for a car. It's definitely the best handling car with the most dynamic ride I've ever had in a car. Like with your ATS, sport mode really makes a huge difference in the CT4. This is my first Cadillac but I have a feeling it won't be my last. Love your videos!

Have you tried the CT5-V ? It has the TT 3.0 V6. Interestingly I had a 2015 ATS4 with the 2.0T and the 6 speed auto and I would get shudder in the winter. I traded it on a 2015 ATS4 with the LFX 3.6L V6 and no shudder! I believe part of it is coming from the 4 cylinder engine!
If the shudder is from the 4 banger that would be amazing and would completely change my perception - however the massive amount of steel in my transmission on the ATS tells me that is not the case. I really like the CT5.... and I'm curious. I'll ask the dealership if they have a CT5-V that I could drive.

It also has less gears to shift through and the trans seems better matched to the engine. Mine also has the Cinnamon interior which stands out from the black.
As I watched the last part of the video regarding the shutter, the CT4 has the 8 speed. I have what I call a "flutter" that happens between 20 and 40 mph. You think about it and most of your in-town driving is done at that speed. I took it to the Cadillac dealer twice. It is intermittent so it didn't do it either of the times I took it in. The second time with me driving with the service guy in the passenger seat. After the test ride, he checked GM service bulletins for the problem. He played a sound file from his computer that replicated the noise. GM had identified it as coming from the ECM (?). It's something electronic involved in controlling fuel consumption. Apparently it does this with a light throttle in this speed range. It is pronounced in that GM says its "rattle" is transferred through the car by the motor mount. I was told that GM was working on a fix and that any eventual repair will be covered under warranty. But, like you, I don't expect that from an almost $50k with only 8,000 miles on it. It's been doing it since around 3,000 miles. In the meantime, I like to crank the sound system anyway so it drowns it out for the most part. It is fine at speeds over 40 mph. But I shouldn't have this issue with this car that may last the entire time I lease the car if GM can't come up with a "fix."
@@WesBlackman I’m sorry to hear it. That’s a real shame. They have not been able to fix my ATSs drivetrain issues either. GM released a TSB about trans shutter in their 8 speeds. I have a 2017 ATS that has the trans shutter. Apparently the fix is to flush the trans and use Mobil 1 trans fluid. My car was at the dealer this past week to have the flush done but the "machine" they use is apparently broken. We'll see if the flush fixes it. I wonder if the trans issue in the 10 speed is related to the fluid as well..
I’ve seen the TSB. The problem seems tied to contamination of the fluid caused by an abundance of metal shavings. The metal shavings come from a spot in the trans with poor fluid circulation (from what I read on gmauthority) and the shudder usually returns. I hope this isn’t the case with your transmission and that the flush will cure the problem. My 6 speed suffers the same metal shavings. But also there are very common torque converter weaknesses and failures. I suspect the new 10 speed shares in these same flaws as well. It’s possible these equipped GM cars will need flushings frequently throughout their lifetime. And perhaps a new TC - I’ve already imagined a custom TC solution is in the future for my ATS once I’m outside of warranty.
The tsb for the 8speed is to do a triple flush and replace fluid with blue label mobil 1 synthetic . The new fluid does not absorb moisture like the old black label mobil 1 does. That is the cause of shudder issues on the A8. If done when the shudder first happens, this is a permanent fix. If done too late a new torque converter is needed.
@@DK-455 read this update! www.google.com/amp/s/gmauthority.com/blog/2020/04/general-motors-looks-to-have-lawsuit-over-eight-speed-transmission-defects-dismissed/amp/
Perhaps the NEW transmission for the 2022 model will correct the shudder problem you describe. It is another 10 speed (like the 2020/2021 one) but it has a different code number and is referred to as "New" in the ordering guide. The 2021 4 cyl one I drove was always downshifting to gain power and with a 10 speed tranny, it has many gears to downshift to. I found it annoying and loud and unrefined, even with the engine sound adjustment on the lowest setting
They shudder because they insist on utilizing a torque converter that locks up at every gear change simply for economical gas mileage. The benefit is probably minimal but makes driving it annoying.
That was what many believed. But it’s just a symptom of low line pressure caused by poor oiling due to debris saturation. Once that’s fixed they work without shudder. Mine was perfect after a flush and filter change. As are most 8 speeds as well. But the 8 speed will need on going flushes to keep it working.
First time watching your vids and I must say this was amazing. A little disappointed with the summary because I love this bat mobile so much, but I get it. I really hope they address this issue. I wonder if a tune would fix it. Sounds like you may want to come over to Mopar lol.
I really like this car. Its so cool! Gorgeous too. I was disappointed too. Whatever the fix, I just need to know there's a fix that works and works well - but this shudder issue goes back so many years and still exists. I know problems happen with cars and trucks. But my assurance rests in the warranty and I trust that the company will back their promises. But when GM decided to legally argue that the 8 speed shudder issue is a design defect and therefore not covered under warranty... that should make any owner feel very vulnerable. And by the way, I grew up with Mopar. I have family that works for Mopar :) But I have no favorite. Overall I tend to skew American made. And typically I jump between the big three depending on the product offerings and my needs at the time. I appreciate your feedback! Thank you so much.
@@algernonwilliams3638 Ohhh yes!! I have dreamed of doing the same thing, perhaps with an LS3 crate engine. The challenge would be pretty enormous. From engine mounts, computer stuff, a different transmission, custom driveshaft, custom rear end (you would need something beefier, perhaps from a Corvette? Or a custom Ford 8.8" center with custom axles, or a good solid rear axle), a method to connect the transmission to the shifter, and of course suspension work to compensate for the additional weight. I'm sure I'm missing something. There are always surprises in a project like this... I cant even begin to add up the $$$$ but it would be a lot to do it right.
For me I am more upset that they went backwards with the horse power. They should have kept the ATS, ATS -V, and CTS-V. Those were solid and had good horsepower. But I do agree for $54k you should have no shudder.
The CT5-V should never have been given that name. It should have been sold as the V-Sport as they did with the CTS when they offered the intermediate engine above the standard V6, but below the V8.
Great video I'm sorry this happened to you. I have an 09 CTS that has vibration issues. I've replaced the inner and outer tire rods, rotors, tires, wheel bearings, drive axle and nothing worked. I'm with you I love the car but the vibration issues are unacceptable..
That car was a loaner while my ATS was in for warranty work. It was brand new! I was just surprised that it had shudder from the trans (it seemed to get less the more I drove it) but also a rear end vibration that never went away and only seemed to be getting worse the more I drove it. I know it's not all Cadillacs, but I hear from quite a few Caddy owners like yourself dealing with drivetrain issues. If I'm going to drive a Caddy, it MUST be smooth! Have you tried inspecting the rear differential? It's a common failure point. Hope you get it resolved.
What transmission do you have in the ATS? 6 or 8 speed? I actually followed your video for trans fluid/filter which was the same as my 2014 with the 6 speed, bought it about a year ago with 98k and no record of transmission fluid ever being replaced, didn’t really have a shudder until a few thousand miles ago and noticed it started getting horrific climbing hills or light acceleration just as you described yours, the fluid worked miracles on it!! Thinking of doing another change in about 5k or so as a DIY flush due to not having any records of being changed in almost 100k miles...very curious as to how yours turns out!
I have the 6! And yes! The fluid change made an amazing difference in shifting and smoothness. I think changing it again is a great idea. I read 3 changes is the recommended solution to dilute and remove most of the metal shavings. I had planned to do the same but I ended up at the dealership for unrelated warranty issues and asked them to look at it. I hope that when I pick up my ATS soon it’s fixed and drives how a Cadillac should drive 👍 BTW, I’m so impressed that yours went 98k!! Not bad 💪 Hope it stays smooth. If you remember, send me a note after your 5k second change. I’d be curious to hear if it’s improved. Thanks for sharing my friend 🙏
I've always enjoyed fixing and tinkering with stuff, apparently, that's the way it's going to be if you own a Cadillac. Now I have an excuse to build that pole barn, with a lift, to service my ATS.

I am so thankful this is being pursued. Gaslighting their customers at a massive scale. In recent news, I was so proud of Toyota for recalling their engines to do a complete replacement. Honorable behavior. They owned up to the problem, honored their warranty, and are maintaining their reputation. GM does the opposite. Breaks my heart. So short sighted. I hope they are forced to remedy the situation and correct course with future issues.
According to car and driver “In our testing, a rear-drive CT5 with the turbo four-cylinder sauntered to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds. A rear-drive CT5-V hit 60 mph in 4.8 seconds.” The base engine 4 cyl turbo ct5 isn’t horrible and gets good mpg. But the turbo v6 available in the V model is truly incredible. So much fun.
Great looking car. Michael I'd like you to consider another comp to drive which has also been known to be hampered by past transmission gremlins. You should give the all new TLX a test drive. Similar in size, both have turbo 4's and 10 spd auto's, and both priced similar.

Hi, I live in Korea. How's Cadillac's durability? There are many people in Korea who don't know about Cadillac, so I left this message because I wanted to ask Americans directly.
Well, this American really adores Cadillac. I am amazed how far they have come. Their cars are well balanced, comfortable, filled with elegant features, impressive performance and most of them look incredible! Tight chassis. No cabin creaks and rattles (at least not in the one's I have been in). The only pause or worry I have is in the transmissions. Perhaps the new 10 speed will prove itself over time. Cadillac engines are typically strong, incredibly efficient. I think Cadillac is cool as can be. Cool like Harley Davidson. But again, I'm sure I'm biased. I really like my 2015 ATS :D

Honestly by daughters 2016 Malibu build quality is better than this car. The car has some cool features but is also lacking in some that should be standard for Cadillac. Cadillac is supposed to be a premium car, everything about it should be better than the average car. After I bought the CT5, I asked myself is this car worth 20K more than a 2023 Honda Accord, I really don't think so.

GM has really lost their way. I had a Hyundai Sonata before my 2016 Cadillac ATS and went 7 year and 157k miles before the transmission started to slip just a bit. Found the ATS fell in love with it from the first test drive. Still love it, but when you hit 28k miles and the big transmission issues start, you really start questioning longevity and where I'll be in a year or two. I unfortunately feel that my dealerships/GM fix is a way to just get me past the warranty period and then it's all on you. It's a good thing your dealership is working with you so well. The CT5 is very tempting, but hearing your problems and living mine, I'm probably going to stay clear of GM from now on. Good luck and appreciate the updates and content.

@@djmatropolis1 I can relate! Sounds similar to my own path. The best car I have ever owned from a quality standpoint was a 2007 Ford Edge. 130,000 miles on the odometer and the only failure was a steel power steering line that rusted through (Vermont winters!).
I love my CT5
My first video I need editing help LOL , next one ☝🏽 at night for lights
Perhaps the NEW transmission for the 2022 model will correct the shudder problem you describe. It is another 10 speed (like the 2020/2021 one) but it has a different code number and is referred to as "New" in the ordering guide. The 2021 4 cyl one I drove was always downshifting to gain power and with a 10 speed tranny, it has many gears to downshift to. I found it annoying and loud and unrefined, even with the engine sound adjustment on the lowest setting
The bigger engine makes for a much better experience :)
668 horsepower with a engine swap ? How much would that cost ?
@@algernonwilliams3638 do you mean the new blackwing?
@@sstressfl I’m mean from a 2.0 to a v8 supercharged? Just the engine nothing else
My dream car. I’m going to get this inshallah
By His grace 🙏👍
For me I am more upset that they went backwards with the horse power. They should have kept the ATS, ATS -V, and CTS-V. Those were solid and had good horsepower. But I do agree for $54k you should have no shudder.
The CT5-V should never have been given that name. It should have been sold as the V-Sport as they did with the CTS when they offered the intermediate engine above the standard V6, but below the V8.
I will make a video soon
2020 Cadillac sport now up 20 inch wheels
@@sstressfl I only changed the fluid I will have them check thanks..
Okay I made my first video , not the greatest but tried Cadillac 2020 Ct5 sport 20 inch rims
I watched your vids! Left you a comment. Enjoy that beautiful car 🤗🙏
Great review !!
@@sstressfl sounds good, I’ll keep you updated! Keep up the great content too! You’re one of very few that have good, in depth content on the ATS😅

a 4cylinder sounds like a 4 cylinder: *surprised pikachu face*
I have a 2.0t in my ATS.... and its very quiet. I prefer that to the louder 2.0t in the CT5... which simply sounds, as you said, like a 4 cylinder.
I've always enjoyed fixing and tinkering with stuff, apparently, that's the way it's going to be if you own a Cadillac.
Now I have an excuse to build that pole barn, with a lift, to service my ATS.
I’ve already been researching custom torque converters :) anything can be fixed with enough money and time 👍
@@sstressfl Isn't that the truth "time and money", Thank you for sharing the great videos too! Custom torque converters can't wait to see that video.🤔
@@jims8887 Appreciate your kind words :) BTW, I wouldnt customize my own... BUT there are companies that do. Tell 'em what you want and they make it happen. Example: gearsmagazine.com/magazine/digging-deep-into-the-6l45-50-converter/
I bought the 2020 ct5 unfortunately this video came up after a purchased it last week and it does shutter unless you drive it like a race car car is in the shop now they claim they never heard of any shutter problems on these car's guy on Facebook ct5 group has a 2023 and he's experiencing the same thing soon as he pulled of the lot the new lawsuit says the trucks are doing the same thing.
CADILLAC CT5 Premium 2024 Roc
I have a mustang eco boost right now, I’m thinking about getting one I was going to ask do you think that the CT-5 would be around the same speed ?
The tlx is a good looking car 👍 I’ll put it on my list.
Genesis is definitely something to check out, they are turning into a monster, and I mean that in the very best way.
@@ericd.4460 I agree and the G70 is a really good car. However, the TLX and CT5 are teeener cars and pretty well matched in size and price. I'd also through in the Stinger
@@ericd.4460 I've seen the good reviews on the Genesis! Hyundai seems to have come a long way. I'm still holding on to hope with American Cars. The Cadillac ATS that I own is still one of the most exciting fun cars I've ever been in.... and to me, even better because its a Cadillac.
if gm can learn, if possible, how to do transmission with bmw, it would be lot better...
I suspect they’ll just focus on electric from now on. No more r&d on old tech stuff.
They took the Bbo brake away n told me it was an over kill for the ats so they got rid of it for ct4/ct5
Do you mean brembo brakes? I just read "the 2021 CT5 Sport now features Brembo brakes as an option, rather than as standard equipment, with the choice of either a red or blue finish for the calipers."
Do you think the CT5-V with the 3.0TT V6 would have the transmission shudder as well?
I have no idea! I sure would enjoy test driving one for a few days to find out!
It seems like those have a wet dual clutch, so that's different isn't it?

I bought this car a 2023 CT5 Sport, I do have buyer's remorse. I wish I had bought the V instead; I also own a 2008 CTS. The build quality on the CTS is way better, the CT5 feels very cheap.
It shows well on the lot. It has a very strong presence even in sport trim. But you’re right, the real Cadillac is the V. It’s the only one worthy of the badge. Later I got to test drive one of them and it was impressive. Expensive! But impressive. 2 Hours with a $68k 2020 Cadillac CT5V | Drive Review

I can totally see why you would say that. Technically the platform is the same as the ATS/Camaro - a newer GM Alpha 2 platform. The Impala was built on the GM Epsilon platform. Hope you have a Happy New Year!!
Im an American car buyer, grew up in Michigan. I want GM to do well! I want to buy Cadillacs! But this certainly seems to be a pattern. For now, I'm on hold until I see a new pattern. BTW, the new Ford Bronco is killer looking and comes with a 7 speed manual gear box :D If my Caddy doesn't survive, I'll consider it after its been out for a year or two.
@@sstressfl Ford really hit a home run with the design of the Bronco. Been a big supporter of Ford, one of my biggest holdings in my Robinhood account. Most of my extended family is employed by Ford at their Claycomo plant in Kansas City. They just need to bring back that dividend. I would also like to see US car manufacturer's succeed, it just seems like they've lost their way. To this day, I still think Chrysler makes some of the best styled cars on the road. I had to leave them after I had to sell my Dodge Magnum, could tell at about 30k that I was going to start having a lot of issues. Bit the bullet and went back to GM and still on the fence if I've made a big mistake. Was hoping to hold onto this one for 7+ years, but just passed 48k today and the transmission is such a concern.
@@djmatropolis1 I can relate! Sounds similar to my own path. The best car I have ever owned from a quality standpoint was a 2007 Ford Edge. 130,000 miles on the odometer and the only failure was a steel power steering line that rusted through (Vermont winters!). I fixed it for $3.90. Other than that I cleaned the k&n air filter and changed the oil regularly. Rust began to rot it and I traded it in on the Caddy. Like you I was sold after the test drive. What a car!! Praying that the current fix at the dealership gives this car long life... and that yours lasts for many trouble free years. Thanks for the feedback. Happy Thanksgiving.
Given the amount of time your car is in the shop, perhaps it time for something new???
The new Bronco with a manual 7 speed is nice 👍 If my car is solid when I get it back I seriously will stay with it. It’s an amazing car. But the Bronco with a manual might be my next ride in a year or more.
Every car or truck video I see from GM vehicles suck and the quality is bad underneath the hood. GMC are over priced. GMC AT4 trucks suck !!!
After my Caddy ATS experience I’m definitely gun shy about GM right now.
All cars are overpriced. But if I’m gonna pay more for a car , I’ll take a caddy over any European garbage every day. BMW , Mercedes , Audi .. all overpriced. All have their issues. The difference is , if an American car like the Cadillac has problems, the parts and service are cheaper . That seals the deal for me , because I’ll never pay $150 just for an oil change just to say I drive a BMW or a Benz
