As a French woman who spent 5 years living in the US, a question that I often heard was “How come French women don’t get fat? How to eat like the French and lose weight?" How can French women eat pastries and cheese and drink wine and stay thin?” After living in both places, experiencing both cultures, and analyzing French and American people’s different relationships with food, I actually found quite a few answers to these questions.
Here's part 2 of my video on how French women don't get fat.
I will be discussing the genetic aspect of weight and addressing the smoking issue! I'll also talk about the main reason why French women don't get fat, regarding the French way of eating and the French way of living.

I'm glad you mentioned physical activity. Years ago I joined my local gym because I just wanted to move around, one of the trainers asked me what my goal was, and I said I just wanted to be healthy, he looked at me very surprised and after that day, he didn't talk to me ever again because my goal wasn't to lose weight but simply be healthy. Is like exercise has to be painful and centered in weight loss when it can also be about feeling good.

Moderation is key. Listening to your body is so important. Everyone hears this but everyone likes to overcomplicate it. Once I started doing this I lost weight just from a diet cause I wasn’t able to workout.

I find that when people are really hard on themselves and deprive themselves of the foods they really enjoy (instead of having them in moderation) then they will end up over eating them and punish themselves for it. That is a really unhealthy way of treating yourself and food

I noticed this at Japanese women, moderation. They eat rice, bread, cakes but... small portions and careful how they mix foods. Rice with fish or veggies and steak with salad. In France I noticed parents don't over fees children. Children eat the same thing as parents but smaller portions. My brothers always placed salad on his kids plates since they were young and they now help themselves with salad, it's normal.

If anyone has ever been to Europe or even anywhere else than America period, especially France, they should have noticed that everything is smaller. Portions, food (berries aren’t the size of apples there) because it’s not pumped with hormones and “organic” isn’t pushed out, all the food is good quality, locally grown and organic. Even cars, houses, etc are smaller. That also has to do with population and economy, but in America everything is huge and we get “in trouble” as kids for wasting our food or not finishing it. In Europe food was scarce in the old days because the climate was so cold, so that’s another factor. My mom is from Europe and she told me when she first came to America the first thing she noticed was that food was larger (fruits, veggies, chicken) but the taste and even texture was lacking.

Unfortunately rice 🍚 spaghetti and these other carbs aren’t good for me. They make me extra hungry, cause bloating, increased insulin resistance. It doesn’t matter about portions. I have fibroids so I need to eliminate unnecessary food groups like processed carbs and sugary snacks

  • @1marianne

I have lived abroad and in the US and agree with everything you say. Also, many of the good French habits of moderation used to be the norm in the US as well. My grandmother ate everything in moderation, was busy and active, but never went to a gym and lived to be 101. We can't just take a walk, it now has to be a "hike." And it's so true about young American women spending their days in sloppy sweatpants and no makeup, but their nights in full glam. This is also something that was not done here until the last ten or 15 years. A terrible trend. Loving your videos!

I feel bad about how many disclaimers you have to make and how careful/worried about offending you have to be because people can't use common sense/accept that there are always exceptions, duh.

Insecurity is a very prominent tone in our society these days. Kids are basically coached to hate themselves so they’re ultra sensitive and they need any excuse to get pissed off and rant. This era of hypersensitivity to others’ emotions has created a culture of walking on eggshells and inevitably blowing up in anger because of it.

Moderation is the key! As an insulin dependent diabetic since I was a teenager, I went to the nutritionist and learned about portion sizes. It seems that during the last 20 years portion sizes at American restaurants actually are generally double. I rarely go out to eat, but when I do I take half of the meal home.

I hate the term "Cheat Meal". When you cheat then you are doing something wrong and then you feel guilty for having it. Why would you do that to yourself? I've noticed that when you cook from scratch, you really feel satisfied cause you made it ! when you eat it, you tend to eat a little less. Because its so good you want it to last for maybe one more day.

They did a study on identical twins on different diets and one got fat and unhealthy while the other one stayed thin. So I think too many people use “genetics” as an excuse for being fat when they could make lifestyle choices to be thin. If it was just “genetics” for why people are fat, then why were there almost no fat people 100 years ago?

    • @folksurvival

Merci beaucoup for the great tips! I'm a 72 year old American woman with un petit peu of French heritage! I live more like a French woman or English woman since I'm mostly Brit-American than living like most American women. I learned from the French to only eat a bit of chocolate so instead of eating a whole chocolate bar in one sitting I can make it last a whole week! Even though I was a fitness trainer/weight trainer in my 40s, I have struggled with my weight for decades only being around 20 lbs overweight! Sometimes,it's more frustrating to have to lose just a little weight than a lot of weight. Remember too, muscle weighs more than fat! Bon chance, good luck to all~

I love learning about how other cultures view food, relationships, habits etc. I live in Canada and still have not ever visited out French region. I’d love to know if Quebec people have generally adopted North American eating or if they have generally maintained more of a French philosophy...

this came at a perfect time for me... Just coming off a binge fest and was planning a 24 hr fast to make up for it, even though I know that every time I restrict, I end up binging. Funny how we see those patterns so clearly and yet we can't resist them. Talk about self-sabotage! Thank you so much for this, I'm going to try and remember to be kind to myself and focus on "everything in moderation". Lots of love from the UK xx

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction: the more you restrict the more you binge. The stricter the restriction, the bigger the binge. Stop restrictions, and binges will magically disappear. Eat full meals like humans have always done (except for cavemen, I suppose) and don't skip your little dessert (in my opinion). I LOVE your videos!!! And so glad to see you have a following. We will all trash the diet culture together, finally!

If you focus on the joy and happiness, the positive side, then you get more of that positive side! Would love to do a collaboration with you on this angle if you are interested!!
