I will never forget back in, I think it was in october of 1997 when I randomly stumbled upon Ghost in the Shell playing around 9pm on a friday night on a new channel called Teletoon. The next few weeks, they would play banger after banger. I was exposed to Ninja Scroll, Patlabor, Vampire Hunter D, Akira, etc. I was 15 yrs old and these animes challenged everything I had seen with superior story and art. Man How I miss the 80s and 90s.

Ninja Scroll imo to this day has no equal. The greatest anime Ninja movie of all time and definitely undoubtedly inspired MANY of all the most popular anime series and movies today.
@user-ng1xj5fj2n I just finally reached that stage now... it's an amazing feeling be able to share with our children things that shaped our youth and experiences of the world. 🥲
You forgot about Urotsukidoji 1 and 3, Legend of the Overfiend and Return of the Overfiend. Even if Urotsukidoji 2 Legend of Demon Womb was a side story within 1 and Urotsukidoji 4 Infernal Road ended on a cliffhanger that remained unfinished in Urotsukidoji 5, I would say Urotsukidoji 1 and 3 are both important films.
One thing that often annoys me about Japanese anime is that if something is popular, there's not just one film series. There will be the original manga, then a film, a semi-sequel film, a TV show that retells the same story, a film reboot, a spinoff film, another series, more manga, a semi-sequel to the last film, but that is also kind of related to the original films, etc. I know, I know, just watch the original and be happy. Unfortunately, my brain doesn't work that way. If there's more content, I have this compelling urge to watch all of it to get the complete story.
Fist of the north star was was my first exposure to anime (though i was probably a little on the young side to be watching it), and i remember renting several of the others at the local video store (on VHS, which says something about my age...). Personally, i would add the Armitage movies to this list as well. Some of the action can be a little brutal, but they dive into some similar themes about what makes one "human" as Ghost in the shell. While Vampire Hunter D is quite good (it's a pretty decent adaptation of the novel), i actually prefer the second film, Vampire Hunter D:Bloodlust. The visuals are nothing short of stunning, and are closer to the style of the original illustrations of the novel series. This results in some very intense fight sequences that are also rather beautiful. Some of the more disturbing sexual content from the novel has been toned down in the film, and a few liberties get taken with the plot, but they make for good storytelling and development of the themes being explored. It's well worth the watch.
Indeed, its a list of must own anime if you really want to enjoy how great and varied anime was instead of the current crop of almost everything feeling sorta "samey". I've been collecting quite a few of them, but damn Berserk 1997 is nearly impossible to find atm.
@@cocodojo I'm still buying the deluxe edition manga slowly. I get one volume with every paycheck. I'd love to get my hands on a physical copy of the 1997 anime, buy for now I'll stick to the digital copy, especially because I'm sure a hard copy would cost a small fortune.
@@handstanddiarrhea you too? I grew up with this stuff but half of them wasn't on my radar. Maybe I wasn't so crazy about crazy anime back then. I should find and watch those now that I'm old.
I loved watching Heavy Metal and American Pop, another similar film I recommend is Rock and Rule(1983). Its not r rated, but still intended for an older audience, story was decent
5:47 100% those 2 movies were something else when i watched them as a kid. Evil wizard with a ww2 film projector scary the crap out of the elves and dwarves. While the mutants used "modern" weapons against them. Brings a whole new meaning to blitzkrieg

Not trying to get too nitpicky, but there were a few facts you list for other things that didn't really match up either. It's always good to be accurate with y our info! Anyways, glad people are still bring some of these old classics s to light.
I've seen all but 2 in your list. I have 15 of them in my personal collection. So I say the following without hesitation. Your synopsis of the stories for these Manga is wofull!
One that I think is overlooked is "Now and Then, Here and There" (1999). 13 episodes; reminiscent of "Nausicaa" to a degree. Very bleak and disturbing until near the end.
Ninja Scroll was one of the first Anime I watched. It was around 8th grade for me. It was the most amazing thing I had seen for anime. What a great story and a love story at that. Very romantic. I suggest watching with your girlfriend.
What I find crazy is the amount of old school animes that have their stuff set 'in the future' which turns out to be pretty much right now, and we're nothing like what those animes thought we'd be. Lol.
I've seen most of these. This was my era of anime. I think it's the reason I have a hard time getting into most modern series. I'd add Riding Bean to the list and Sword For Truth. Both are short but sweat.
While I don't recall the rating of the original Blood: The Last Vampire, I feel it deserves at least a mention. While there are 2 subsequent Blood movies and 2 series, the original does the best job of setting the stage for what could have been one of the best stories, ever. Sadly, the movie ends feeling like the pilot for additional story that never followed. The third movie, Blood-C: The Last Dark, started well, it quickly digressed into a rather boring and poorly animated affair. I keep hoping some studio will pick up where the original movie ended.
Sometimes you say things like "severe nudity" and that's a very odd application of the word, "severe", even though I admit it's technically correct. Who writes this things?
A list of adult Anime but no mention of the 2nd Patalabor movie is a severe oversight. A political motivated tale of revenge pitting the police force against the military in a civil war with about 90% of the runtime being dialogue between a few people is about as adult as you can get.
Odd th half of the series you say is "R rated" are actually technically not, because not all of them had theatrical releases and were in the OVA format and not a movie format.

I’m surprised Doomed Megalopolis was not on here. It’s pretty brutal and has perverse sexuality in it. But also I didn’t know the infamous scream that I’ve heard people use in their videos is from this show/movie. And also the priestess in here is Keiko who looks and sounds like Kikiyo from Inuyasha. It’s almost like she’s the same person expect, she’s the embodiment of the goddess of mercy in this movie.
Because of their visual style, I consider, along with Heavy Metal 2000, only 2 of the Heavy Metal chapters to be borderline anime. Also, while comparatively mild, Tank Police should've been mentioned.
Surprised that " legend of the overfiend " failed to get any mention what so ever especially considering that it had four sequels with the fourth being a four part series , but maybe it was too graphic for you to watch 😆 I have witnessed several people be unable to finish even the first movie
There's two that could've made this Top 20 List....Violence Jack and Urotsukidoji Legend of the Overfiend....talk about your graphic violence and sex scenes...those two I think tops them all.
