I mean u said this great stuff by our guy here, influenced u to take the plunge, but how did u hear of this nigh-40 yr old manga & nigh-30 yr old anime that has influenced more western media than probably any other manga ever?!? I found Berserk late cuz I turn 40 yrs old in less than 3 weeks, & I got into anime late, & tried to focus on Seinen. Griffith’s decision to continue his self deceit by activating the behelit is such a tragic parallel to his earlier breakdown in front of Casca. It is simply the continuation of his self destructive cycle, made manifest by hurting the only people who ever loved him, dream or no. Casca and Guts would have cared for him to his dying day. The Band of the Hawk loved Griffith for more than just his dream, but he never learned how to love even himself, let alone others.

I'm glad that you actually took your time and did a very well job on analyzing Griffith rather than taking him for his word every time. What people don't understand and what has been stated million times, if Griffith had no emotions towards, let's say' ANY of the Falcons (Hawks) the Ritual wouldn't have worked, remember, not ANY flesh and blood will do. In my opinion Gutses departure was a moment born of a big misunderstanding, where it was already cemented for me that Griffith saw Guts as a friend and probably the only friend, and even when you review his "friends" speech, only Guts fits it. Think about it, one that had own dream and would oppose him, who was the one who literally fought against the Falcons and in the end Griffith himself to join them. But that isn't even relevant since Griffith before saying "Sacrifice" did say to Guts that he was the only one. Any way there are more moments even after the Rebirth, Griffith, while Skullknight had Guts and Casca on horseback and was escaping, was about to crush them, looked at Guts and stopped himself, was it just causality, or a moment of hesitation I agree with you, people say Griffith is pure evil from start to finish, some agree with him, i personally like to view Griffith as the person who walked down back from the burning castle of the queen "Tombstone of Flames (2)" Volume 8 ... what i mean by that is that is the Griffith without his guard up, for me it is such a somber scene, one we will never see, even though i knew Guts was about to leave, the way Griffith was so vulnerable to him just broke me... We have the privilege to see how many little situations, misunderstandings and the fact that Griffith risked his life so many times for Guts YET from his POV Guts just randomly left like "cya guys" leaving not just Griff but all of them. I would've been more mad. I would've prolly told Guts that he's a POS :D

Really great points here man, this is why Griffith is so well written in a sense. There is a building of moments that created the cause and effect for the evil Griffith/femto to appear. I think he would feel 2d otherwise. Looking forward to hearing your opinion on my next video!

Fantastic and relevant commentary! On both Beserk's philosophical themes, but also I love how you have made this relevant to the individual. Your closing statement here touches quite viscerally into what I (and perhaps many others) adore about Beserk. We can see parts of our own broken psyche/story in the behaviors of Griffith (and many other characters). Some of which you touch upon in this video. @@grimalgram Well.. it was a long video, but as far as I can recall, what made yours stand out was..
You manage to abstract out the themes and discuss them without losing track of the source material.
A lot of people either fall into focusing too much on the specifics and concrete plot for it to be interesting as a supplementary piece of media, or they abstract too far out to where it might as well be a general discussion of themes rather than a discussion of the book/movie being discussed. You struck a fine balance. Secondly, a well written villain, like a real person doing evil, sees him/herself as the good guy. At least to the extend of finding their actions justified. You present Griffith in a way that I think a sober Griffith himself would agree with, without falling into playing devils advocate for the fun/trolling/memes. You seem to understand that explanation isn't the same as moral justification and this makes the analysis subjective in just the right objective sense, if that makes sense. You also seriously consider the character instead of naively reading lines and taking them at face value, which adds a layer of depth to both the character and story that will be all new to the more casual/simple-minded reader. You invite the viewer to see him/herself in Griffith in just the right way. You also engage the viewer in the discussion in the end without it becoming cheesy. Overall just a really good video. The only funny downside of your video is that it inadvertently reveals how poorly made the anime is, especially the dubbed performance. When I say poorly, I mean so in terms of comparing the potential of the source material to the execution of the show. I dare say: as a professional editor myself.. it's just not.. haha, well, let's just say that the contrast between how seriously you take this compared to some of the anime staff is funny at times.. and sad ;) Anyway.. something like that made it stand out to me. I haven't watched any of your other stuff, but I suppose you've earned me giving you a sub ;)

Hey man, I’ve considered making my own berserk yt videos like yours for a while because I feel like nobody has done a real high level analysis of the themes in the story and just how fundamental they are.
Your last video was so fantastic, I really loved both the content as well as the aesthetic/editing and I’m really pleased that another person like yourself is giving berserk these types of quality formal analyses.
If you decide to keep doing this (I hope so 🙏), here are some things concepts I found really interesting so far into the story as I am only around chapter 200, keep up the fantastic work!! 👏👏👏
    SPOILER WARNING
1)Religious fundamentalism/ the fragility in blind faith during the conviction arc. Seeing how human beings in such depraved states of plague/poverty depend on faith to survive. To protect that faith, they will even justify murder, torture, etc. This contrasts with Guts, who is the only man willing to look into the darkness of the world with his own eyes (which is what draws Farnese to him). There’s a Miura interview somewhere where he talks about how he came up with Mozgus’s face, he said something like “a religious fundamentalist puts principle over people. I tried to imagine a narrow minded person in this image, and what came out was a square-faced man”. Really interesting stuff.
    2) The vitality of Guts hatred. I think there’s some analysis still to be done that ties together Guts as someone who IS “berserk”. Even long before the armor, his conversations with Godo, and even the way he is drawn indicate that his deepest life force is his rage. My favorite panel in the series is guts charging on horseback in doldrey where he’s drawn like a wildcat. Miura in some interviews also mentioned that he envisions guts as a wildcat, which may explain why sometimes he makes Guts hair stand up in tense moments.
One niche that I hope someone will fill one day is mixing an analysis of berserk’s themes with quotes/insights from Miura’s interviews. The process of how Miura went about building the story is so fascinating and I think some of his insights on certain things can really richen videos like this. Anyway, if you’re ever interested in yapping about berserk or getting feedback on scripts, I’d be happy to chat sometime. Otherwise, thanks again for the fantastic vids, from one berserk lover to another

I don’t know about any of you guys but when I watched Beserk and especially Griffiths life downfall and the eclipse, it gave me this strange sensation, I felt something eerily familiar about it which I just can’t put words to. I grew up a Christian and have known a lot about end time prophecy in the Bible and the story of Griffith is uncannily similar to the prophecy of the coming one world ruler we know as the Antichrist. When I was 5 years old I dreamed a dream and in my dream I stood at the corner of my street called Bowers Avenue and as I looked up at the sky, the sky was clear blue without a cloud and the sun was at the fearless noon. But suddenly the Sun went black as black as a black hole and yet it was still daylight and blue sky. As I wondered and stared at the black hole sun I noticed a cloud of smoke emanating from it. But as kept watching, the smoke was coming towards the earth and as it got closer I realised it wasn’t smoke at all but an army of black horse men riding upon black horses. And at the head of them was a black horseman larger than the rest. And suddenly I was terrified because I knew that of all the people they were coming for, I was one of them to be hunted. Suddenly I turned to flee and as I fled I realised I had a companion with me and in our panic we ran in different directions. I fled down the street towards my home and then the dream changed and I was in a BMX park with riders doing stunts on those ramp thingies. Years later I wondered how at 5 years old I could have such a complex dream.

In my opinion Griffith works amazingly as a villain, we see a man who fights with an unturned drive to achieve such dreams, and yet a single man was enough to make him lose it all, and when things were bleak for him, it all came back but in the most messed up ways, and he didn’t even show any emotion in the end. It was like to him, this is just a piece of the puzzle to achieving my dream.

As for the rest of the manga, I believe that the dehumanization of Guts in Black Swordsman and the Conviction Arc (especially Lost Children) followed by the eventually donning of the Berserker armor all have evidence pointing towards a singular thematic question (although many, many other relevant themes are also present among these and the following arcs): Is it worth sacrificing everything to accomplish a dream?
We see Guts slaughter possessed and pseudo apostle children, almost murder the likes of Jill, and develop the infamous Beast of Darkness. He abandons Casca for two years, and then even afterwards his crusade struggles to bring him anything other than more violent demonstrations of fury and trauma, culminating in the uncontrollable Berserker state that could cause the death of his new found friends. Following his path would inevitably lead to the death or abandonment of his comrades in a moment similar to Griffith’s betrayal and sacrificial offering. We see Griffith in the meanwhile accomplish his dream essentially, although his warped fantasy land is unstable and built upon lies. Is a dream worth sacrificing for if it will ultimately destroy aspects of your life or the lives of others? Again, this theme is ultimately intertwined with the crux of the Golden Age and what made it so compelling.

I think Guts is the only man who Griffith makes an exception for in this regard. Guts on his own stands out from others, he is ruthless, with an unstoppable energy for survival since a young age. He is extremely competent. YET, in spite of this, he seemingly does it all for no reason at all. That's what in my opinion keeps Griffith so interested in him. I mean he is fascinating, killing 100 men with no aspiration at all....its baffling. Guts is the ONLY other Hawks member who holds himself to ridiculously high standards as Griffith does, but for Guts its only in the context of battle, and for no other reason than because its all he knows how to do. Imo Griffith respects this dedication and competence in Guts, despite the fact he doesn't have a vision

12:53 I feel like he states this also so he can detach himself from chains that put his dream at a risk. This chains being the loved ones that he can lose at any given moment by violence or a whim of fate. He needs to keep using people to achieve his goals, as any leader with a vision, from the lowliest entrepreneur to the highest CEO would in real life, which in itself is not unethical. So he eventually grows more into seeing them as tools, rather than people. Just to protect himself from the dangers of losing someone he loves so much, that he would feel a regret so deep, a pain so high, it could derail his dream and his mindset. Something that, inevitably, ends up happening.
Building so many walls, a frozen heart for the dream, made him extremely weak when confronting a real failure for the first time in his talented life. Is like a virtuoso failing at playing not any song, but his favorite. For the first time. Therefore, he now knows, he is not invincible. He can fail. He doesn't have the toughness of a man who only knows failure and gets up again looking for a win. He has the extreme sensitivity of the man who only knows winning.

Griffith was lying to himself when he basically said he didnt have friends... thats why he snapped when his only true friend left him and the band. Things should have been different. I sympathize with Griffith but I don't condone his actions at the eclipse... such a sad story.

    • @grimalgram
      @grimalgram  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

I think that's a great point to note. When are characters actually just lying or saying things they don't truly believe. I think speaking to princess Charlotte at the time Griffith was definitely misguided due to trying to impress her or lying to make her see him as different from the rest. Do you think Griffith lies a lot through the series?

@@grimalgramI guess in a way yea, but it's more like denial. Like when he says he doesn't feel bad for the people who have died under him.. but he clearly feels a lot of guilt for it, he just doesn't want to seem weak because he has to keep the image of being the all powerful leader who people see as above the rest when he is just a normal person and he knows that.

@@camfrog79 definately, denial seems a huge factor in Griffiths personality. Great observations 🏆

@@grimalgram rationalizing things in the human brain using logic. Rationalizing sins. Words. English. Framing acts. Rationalizing bad things is the same or worse and emotionally committing hate crimes unthinkingly. It is hard to explain.
The words in your head you think about a thing, isnt actually it. Even if you think it is or want it to be
OR EVEN IF IT LOGICALLY MAKES SENSE (at the time)
Science proves itself wrong all the time. All logic is a "working" THEORY.
This is the difference between facts, and truth.
Extremely extremely important. But people use the words interchangeably.
Start going through daily life deciphering facts, misinformated facts, and truths or limited truths in your life. Especially your mind.
      "Ambi"tion
      Is an
      "Ambi"guous word.
Facts are ambiguous. Logic is ambiguous. Rationality is ambiguous. The eye of the beholder.
Truth is not ambiguous. It can be dark or light or neutral but truth isnt evil. It just....is.
      Facts skew
      Truth doesnt.
      Facts change over time.
      Truth doesn't.
Facts get mistranslated even when the person translating means well, and is honest.
      Truth doesnt.
Truth is waiting for the water to clear.
Facts are grasping at muddy water swishing it around effecting it further to try and find the truth.
You look at truth with no words and see what it is without having to say it
Facts are the opposite. Rationality is the opposite.
This is why those who know don't say and those who say dont know.
      Because you really CANT say.
Its the flaw of human language and all its intelligence and technicality. Its a directionless rocket ship that needs human souls to burn.
Vs truth is a silent, little beat up broke down little plane or boat. But with clear direction and good moral standing, only using the wind and harming nothing.
And thats another conversation in the complication. Bc the little boat is in a world of conflict and is forced to effect and interact. The blacksmith is sort of like the little boat or plane. And Guts and Griffith are giant destructive rocket ships trying to "help" the world in the way the think is best.
Guts helps immediately even if it could bring destruction later. If theres a baby you can save 95% or a bus full of kids across the street you cant reach with a 50% chance of saving, guts saves the baby in front of him. Even though he will knowingly blame himself for the others.
Griffith is willing to destroy anything as long as it brings help later. The ends justify the means to Griffith. Griffith is willing to let the baby die with no hesitation to make the best possible chance to save other lives on a massive scale even if its a distant concept. On the large scale and humans living for a blink of time to the earth, might as well try for the gold. Even if your immediate sins robs the reason why you wanted to do good in the first place.
But griffith changed along the way..and guts didnt. Which is more contrast. Guts digs a deeper hole in the same way, a constant, masculine. Burrowing, looking for a home, and not having one. Griffith subverts to get to the same goal, digging many holes, feminine. Bird like. Moving, no home. But valuing freedom but responsibility and sins costs you that freedom.
Kindof like jack sparrow being a pirate. Makes him the thing that gets chased. But he wants freedom, but then he gets chased.
All a conflicting inexplainable paradox. So you just have to see it. And know it. While everyone else is angry at you and rushing you for what you say or dont say. As if people wanted to kill the blacksmith because he refused or accepted to build weapons for one side of a conflict, hes then making an enemy of either side. But if he refuses both, he becomes an enemy of both.
Not for something he did that was evil to either side. But he was unwilling to do harm to either side being the actually most peaceful party, he is wanted dead or to be captured and put into slave labor the most. Labeled an enemy.
Bc of being a PERCEIVED "threat."
      Just like our own military.
Who is a "threat"? I never decided i was a threat? A threat is who you FEEL is a threat. And if youre insecure and toxicly feminine everything and anything is a threat. So just blow it all up and shoot our own people. Anyone who not just attacks but also DOESNT support us attacking is also a possible THREAT. Which is actually very weak, childish in a bad way, and toxic feminine on the largest scale of even countries and all these manly men who take lives and talk about working HARD their whole life and everyone needs to live like them even though they hate themselves.
Its ironically super feminine. Which is why the overcompensation of masculine ACTING. Just like how steroids can make men grow female breasts along with the muscles.
I could go on and on with examples. Bc whats true on the micro is true on the macro.
I hope this clears it up. Griffith and Guts are talking to themselves in their heads. And no matter what theyre saying or information they have, they are almost surely wrong and real life will play out in a way that isnt A or B but C. But has a quality or two of both A and B. While also being neither.
      In summary...
