I tried this and the first time it worked just ok. Then I tried it again, but used a toothbrush to really scrub it in, and it still did not remove the rings around my husband's collars. So I did more research and discovered a site that suggested shampoo (the cheap kind will do; don't use your good stuff). Needless to say, it worked WONDERS and all the rings were gone from several shirts! I wish I would have taken pictures and posted to TH-cam.. Sorry....but it really works!! Directions: pour a little into a small container, dip a toothbrush in and spread on the collar and then scrub back and forth a few times, then wash.

The best treatment is to get to the root cause of the "ring around the collar". For set-in stains, get a large bucket [like a diaper pail & add warm water & a cup or per pkg directions of 20 mule team borax, and/or Arm & Hammer WASHING Soda [these act like less toxic versions of boosters such as Oxy-xxxxx [NOT baking soda, although that would not hurt anything]; add the garment to soak overnight, then launder as usual. You can use a gentle brush to scrub the stained areas but it can break the fibers so do not scrub vigorously.
For those who asked about sweat stains/yellowed collars, & armpit stains on white shirts, try soaking in a bucket of cool water & vinegar; let soak a few hrs or overnight, then wring out & wash as usual.
Again, getting rid of the root cause of these issues is best. For ring around the collar/cuffs, a well scrubbed body/neck will leave less grime & using a body soap that does not add to the buildup when combined with body oils etc should leave less residue. Many commercial body soaps make the situation much worse, as well as adding colognes, after-shaves, and even shaving cream residuals can make the soil problem much worse. The alcohol, synthetic chemical [toxin] fragrances added to colognes & after shave/pre-shave products all can leave stains that are very difficult to remove.
I use Dr Bronners castile unscented liquid soap, and a liquid soap derived from sea kelp - unscented, and sometimes products by Seventh Generation because a.) they come in an unscented/no-dye version, and b.) are derived from plant-based sources, not petroleum products that the "Big Name" commercial [P&G et al] products are derived from.
    Three other tips:
    1. commercial deodorants/antiperspirants contain toxic chemicals that can also deteriorate clothing especially near the underarms. When one is regularly clean on the outside & healthy on the inside, one rarely needs a deodorant, and we actually need to perspire. Fresh sweat does not stink; the bacteria in "old" sweat is what is odor-offensive. Particular body odors in an otherwise hygienic body can be a sign of illness or disease. Example: a distinctively sweet body odor much like that of old-time nail polish remover can be a sign of ketones being present & a sign of illness.
    2. Synthetic fabrics stain much worse than natural fiber fabrics. Even cotton/polyester blends can hold onto all kinds of stains much more than 100% cotton, rayon, linen, ramie, silk or wool.
    3. Getting stains out of fabrics is easiest when one knows what the stain is [and yes, treat the sooner the better] because depending upon what caused the stain -- specific proteins, or oils, or dyes -- all require different methods of stain removal. Enzymes usually work best on protein stains [milk, meat, blood, grass, etc] whereas ink/dye stains may require alcohol to break up those molecules & help them release from the fibers they're bonded to.

Can you use corn starch on non-white shirts? As in, a pattern dress shirt or blue dress shirt? Will that cause any problems? Thanks.
