We love hearing your stories, seeing your messy/clean pics and answering your questions!
I think we mention baking soda in about 50% of our videos. The stuff is incredible. It's cheap, available in every grocery and drug store and has so many uses. It's fascinating stuff! It's great for three key functions from a cleaning standpoint: abrasion, deodorizing and whitening.
I could probably do a video on 10 uses for baking soda every week for the next 20 years and never once repeat myself...now do you understand how amazing this stuff really is?!
I also love it because it is safe enough to eat, in fact, it is found in many baking recipes. Therefore, I'm convinced that it is a household cleaning kit staple.
So in no particular order, here you go:
10 - remove scuff marks and crayon marks from a painted wall.
9 - battle the worst body odour with baking soda.
8 - clean and unclog a smelly sink drain.
7 - clean your tile grout. Our in-depth video on grout cleaning • How to Clean Grout (Ea...
6 - add abrasion to any cleaning product (especially a homemade one) - this puts other products like VIM and Comet to shame. Here's our video on making your own cleaning products • 5 Homemade Cleaners! D...
5 - deodorize your kitty litter box.
4 - clean your non-self cleaning oven. You don't need anything caustic!
3 - remove hair product build-up from your hair (hair clarifying treatment). Mind=blown.
    2 - deodorize your carpets
1 - add to laundry to create an amazing laundry booster!
Have I convinced you to purchase an industrial drum of the stuff yet?
What are your favourite baking soda tips? Let me know if you try any of these and what your results were.
Do you have any ideas for a top 10 list? Let me know!
    Thanks for watching :D

I just love your tips on cheap, nontoxic cleaning of virtually everything. Baking soda has always been a staple in my house. When my niece had stained teeth, I told her to brush with baking soda and the stains came right out!

THIS IS AMAZING!!! I added some baking soda to my stainless steel teapot, which was rather brown from the inside ( if you come from England like me, you know exactly what I'm talking about), let it sit, and was getting ready to scrub it clean. When i looked in, the whole tea hing had PEELED off., i never knew there was anything that could peel off ..lol. Thank you Melissa, you have truly inspired me. I think i have watched all your videos within a week (since discovering you) and cleaned things i never thought of cleaning or didn't know how to:) Keep up the good work.

Yesss baking soda has been my new obsession for cleaning. It works great on stainless steel and to remove hard water and calcium from faucets just spray vinegar let sit (or make a paste) then use an old tooth brush it comes right out! I love it. Thank you! Your motivation for cleaning video has changed my life

10: Yes please! No expensive scuff cleaner needed!
9: I do this. Works like a charm.
8: Baking soda will deodorize the drain, but when you mix baking soda and vinegar what comes out is literally just salty water. It doesn't unclog a drain. If you want to unclog it, a biological enzyme cleaner is much more effective, and is good for grease buildup. You can also plunge it, or use a wire hanger with a hook on the end if it's a hair buildup.
7 & 6: I don't use it on my floor because it leaves a very noticeable and feel-able (is that a word?) buildup. If you do this on the floor (or anywhere else for that matter), MAKE SURE you get the buildup off.
5: This is one of the best cat litter tips I've ever been given! Guests never smell it anymore!
4: Leaves build-up, simply doesn't do anything for burnt on mess. Even Easy-Off took two hours of scrubbing to clean up the disgusting gunk on the oven after my partner and I moved in here. Also, baking soda and vinegar again don't do anything when put together except bubble and make salty water.
3: Don't do this, ever. It's waaaay too basic on the pH scale to be used anywhere on the skin. Your scalp will end up dry and scaly. Use vinegar ALONE instead, it's acidic. Your skin is naturally acidic. Believe me, your scalp will thank you.
2: I asked my vacuum company about this one and they said that baking soda's tiny powdery particles will clog and strip the vacuum's motor if it's used in high amounts. Try it at your own risk, but definitely do your research guys.
1: I haven't done research on this one.
That's five things that baking soda does NOT work for, three that it DOES work for, one that's unknown to me and one that you CAN do but it's not really effective at.

Hi just found your site, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. I do have a question about using sprinkled bacon soda on carpet before vacuuming. According to two different vacuum cleaner repair places the reason my motors kept burning up on my machine was because i was vacuuming bacon soda. These each were fairly expensive machines and replacing the motors was pretty costly too? This was around 5 years ago, so I am wondering, since you have a proffessional cleaning business if you have experienced that issue. Maybe vacuumes are made better now days. I sure would love to use this tip again? Maybe, could you share what brand vacuum you use at home and proffessionally that has endure vacuuming bacon soda?

I think I actually effaced the top layer using a Dawn, baking soda and water paste. Now it shines. Thank you, Melissa!

Thanks again, like you mentioned it's really good with laundry if you have a husband and kids who play sports and get extremely smelly armpits and ground in stains, I wash that load at night so I can soak it over night in a paused washing machine full of water and a half a cup of baking soda. I add laundry detergent the next morning and start or continue the wash cycle, it gets the stains out and best of all the under arm smells are gone without any scrubbing.

    1) Sprinkle baking soda on the floor of the car, leave it overnight and vacuum. Removes dirt and smell. 2) Pour baking soda into a wide mouth jam jar an decorate with a ribbon, drip in a few drops of your favourite essential oil, leave it on the toilet cistern cover to freshen your toilet and minimise mildew. I even threw in a few colored beads for deco.

I use baking soda every day for so much. Laundry as you said (helps with urine smell too) you can do a face scrub with it and your normal cleanser; Make homemade “goo be gone”. But my greatest thing was the mattress stains. I have little kids and often have stains on their mattresses. When this happens I sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda on the area, and spray with peroxide, cover and leave. After a bit check on it and repeat if necessary. Then I use a soft brush (since it is still damp or stuck) and brush it to loosen it. Then vacuum. If there still is some residue left over I re-brush and vacuum. Stain is gone and mattresses if fresh again. Oh be careful when using as a deodorant. It can cause an irritation like a raw burn type thing because it is caustic. I use it myself a lot since I have issues with store antiperspirants/deodorants.

yes as well as sick stains. my youngest had the flu and was sick many times, we cleaned as best you can, but it still left stains as well as potty pull up leaks. i remembered somewhere useing sometjing like this on carpet stains, so i tried it. it did take off that satin-y shine, but it worked great. I wish I had before/after shots because it worked great for me. I ALMOST wish for more stains. ALMOST. lol. I dont know how it would work on other types. mine was just your basic satin type mattress.

This is long after your post, but just want to say I have been using ‘Salt of the Earth’ natural deodorant for almost two years. It is made (or distributed) by a UK co. called Crystal Spring, so I don’t know about USA availability. There are probably other rock crystal deodorants. I have only tried two, and I love this one. Anyway it works surprisingly well. I find the trick is to use a lot and the effect is very long lasting.

Yes it's true! Arm and hammer baking soda has countless uses for pennies a day. One of my favorite I found this winter while I was sprinkling it on frozen ice on the ground ... on the way to my car, when I went to open my locked car door the lock and door was frozen shut ... then I got a super idea to sprinkle the baking soda around the door opening frame to melt the ice and then I sprinkled it on my key to the door. It worked in a short time with a little effort with my ice scraper!

Great article! I love the many uses for baking soda it's such a versatile product. I have one comment though, I am a guy and generally I think I'm tough. But I learned a lesson from baking soda. I generally think that nothing can hurt me (within reason). I tried the baking soda as a homemade deodorant, but my underarms became inflamed and turned beet red. It literally took weeks for it to go away. So I tried it again thinking I had used to much baking soda, same thing happened all over again. So after much adjusting I looked it up and guess what I found? Baking soda affects a lot of people the same way in the underarm area (I think it was the glands?). I went back to the commercial brands for now, they don't burn my skin and make me break out in a rash. I hear that there's an essential oil recipe out there that is decent. Anyways it was a great article, I thought your readers ought to know in case their one of the people that is affected by this!

I wash my hair by mixing in a squirt bottle 1 Tbsp. baking soda and 8 oz. of hot water. Squirt it into your hair and rub in on scalp. Then rinse and use 1 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar in 8 oz. water in another squirt bottle and condition! I make mine by the gallon and store under the sink. I pour 8 oz. of each into decorative bottles to keep in my shower. Its like a years worth of shampoo and conditioner for a couple dollars. I used to use Wen but this cleans my hair just as well.

+Synergie 16 Baking soda is awesome. A while back, I had my water utilities shut off for major repairs. I googled and searched on how people used to wash with those old fashioned wash basins in the old days. The secret is to not use soap, it takes a lot of water to rinse off. Use baking soda to wash with, Baking soda neutralizes body dirt and odor like nothing else. I happen to have very oily skin and baking soda emulsifies body oils and washed everything with just 2 basins full of water.

A few days ago I made bacon for breakfast, and I thought everything was great. I used my ceramic griddle, which has a little tray for collecting grease. Imagine how upset I was when I realized the grease had spilled out, all over the table! Normally I would have spent ages wiping up the yucky mess wasting paper towels. Luckily I thought of using baking soda, and it soaked up all the grease! Just wiped everything off the table, wiped with a wet soapy sponge, and all clean!

***** Hi Melissa, I found your page here and took your advice about mold and it actually works!!!
I'll admit I was skeptical about using white vinegar, lemon juice, and a
few drops of Dawn dish washing detergent mixed together in a spray
bottle to clean black mold. Of course, I used baking soda as an abrasive
agent. Thank you so very much for all you and your husband do and, I
very much appreciate everything you and your husband do for us.

Great video! I gave you the thumbs up, subscribed & sharing. Another helpful use is mixing baking soda with white or clear vinegar for hard water deposits in the commode or glass shower doors. Allowing it to soak, then scrub using a sponge or brush easily removes those tough stains. Thanks again & looking forward to viewing & sharing more of your videos.

Not necessarily for house cleaning, but this will work for face cleaning! Use baking soda with water and lemon juice as a natural exfoliator and astringent and your skin will be smooth and silky!

You probably get asked this a lot but is bicarbonate of soda the same thing I now you can buy bicarbonate of soda for both baking but you can also buy it specifically for cleaning as well the ingredients are just a bit different but Bicarbonate for baking has a raising agent the one for cleaning says 💯% Sodium Carbonate. Could I use any of these for cleaning white clothing?

Try using it for sunburn. Mix it with cold water then soak a towel and apply to burnt skin. Leave a while then resoak and repeat. The baking soda absorbes the heat, meaning you can get a good night's sleep without overheating. You will actually feel the towel warm as you do this.

I have found that many, if not most people will get a rash when using baking soda as an under arm deodorant. What I did was use 50 / 50 with corn starch or arrowroot. There was till a slight rash but it was nothing. After a few months of that, I switched back to 100% baking soda, with hardly any rash and it feels like there is no rash at all.

It would foam, but it wouldn't be detrimental to your laundry. You can do one or the other, or add some in at the beginning (baking soda), and some toward the end (vinegar).
