  • I purchased this survival kit off Amazon for only $25. It had an overall 4.5 star rating with most rating being 4 or 5 stars. I wanted to see if you could buy a cheap Chineese kit like this and have it actually be useable. Or, if the overall kit wasnt practical, were some of the components atleast quality enough to get you started while you save for something better. Check it out and see how I modified it to be more practical!
    Check it out and let me know what you think in the comments!

    Solid. I personally would put it all in a freezer bag instead of that case.. Good review!

      A freezer bag would have done a much better job than the original case too! I broke the case up and only kept what was useful. The case didn’t make the cut, lol. Thanks for watching!

    I was laid up with cancer and all my gear was on the other side of the state. I could not get a knife shipped to Boston (behind enemy lines).
    I needed a knife, so I ordered the kit and an EDC sling pouch, just so I’d have something to occupy my time. You’re right, the price of the kit was well worth the knife.
    I kept the knife, the light (it’s decent), the brass compass, (I noticed you didn’t get one), the survival bracelet (mine worked) and the pen (who doesn’t need a pen?). Oh and I kept the spork combo (it’s useful).
    I tossed most of the rest and kept a few things to build starter kits for friends.

    Nice you made that a great entry level kit! If someone wanted to go to the next level they could even add a Lumintop Tool 2.0 AA or other decent AA flashlights for $20 and have better flashlight with decent mode spacing. But then its like a $75 kit.

    I bought a similar kit at Harbor Freight, out of curiosity.
    I immediately removed everything and most of the items have been assigned tasks elsewhere. The box and foam are the only things left together.
    A spork was the thing that caught my eye. 😂

    I like how everything is black so if you drop anthing it'll be nearly impossible to find. Those plastic cases are terrible. They easily break in one way or another, especially the latches and the hinge. If anything you're better off just finding and buying the knife by itself, same with the whistle. They give you a pen but nothing to write on. Only things I'd keep are the knife, ferro rod, whistle, and survival blanket.

    • @Eidolon1andOnly
      @Eidolon1andOnly 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quick search on amazon and I found a near identical knife, only difference was the handle had a green biohazard symbol zombie patterned handle and the blade doesn't have partial serration (which I think is a plus) for $7.98, and a similar whistle for $1.59 in aluminium, and a different but similarly priced titanium whistle for $1.97, Also found similar paracord bracelet for under $4. Space blankets like that can be found for under a buck. I personally wouldn't even buy the cheap paracord bracelet though, and I wouldn't keep the one in this kit either. Nor would I keep that flashlight for anything other than home use. I think you'd get a better launching pad for a small kit by purchasing one of those sardine can kits from WalMart for about $12. A lot of cheap, yet usable stuff in those kits, and it saves you the time to source out sone of the stuff. Add a reasonably priced knife and a few other things, and for about $25 you could easily make a more useful personal survival kit than what this thing offers.

    • @NEP_Chris
      @NEP_Chris  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Eidolon1andOnly lol i bought the kit and reviewed it so no one else would make the mistake of buying one thinking it would serve them well. Honestly, the knife was pretty decent. Same with the flashlight. The 2 of those items alone were worth the whole kit. The fire steel is the same exact same one that comes with the Gerber Bear Grylls survival knife so it’s not too crappy either. It was just a video I did for fun. 👍

    • @Eidolon1andOnly
      @Eidolon1andOnly 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NEP_Chris Don't get me wrong, the video was great, And I'd agree that between the knife, the flashlight, and the ferro rod, it's worth the price because sourcing those out independently would be rather expensive or roughly the same price. In fact if I were to consider those items as a gift, I'd buy the kit and disassemble it, give out the useful items and give those to the people I like, and the lame items lije the pen, key light, etc to the people I don't like as much for a stocking stuffer, LOL. I'd like to see your take on a similar style knife that amazon by a company called Albatross which is selling for about $13. It's a 6-in-1 which is supposed to come with a built in flashlight, whistle, ferro rod, seatbelt cutter (which you forgot to mention about your knife in the video), glassbreaker, and maybe a compass? That could be the slightly more expensive one though. The knives look similar but seem pretty gimmicky. I think they sell a 15-in-1 style for about the same price you paid for this entire kit, LOL. Be fun to see you check those out. If the blade is solid and at least one or two of those things aside from the glass breaker and seatbelt cutter seem halfway decent, I might just get a few since the price is right. They come in other colors for an additional $2. Sorry for sounding like a Negative Nancy, new subscriber here. Usually I like to end on a more positive note about the content creator or the video itself but I was so distracted by the fact this thing included a pen but no paper, LOL! Still checking out a few of your videos.

    How about actually using stuff. A knife might feel good but then falls apart after first use. A good review would be actually taking it out and using stuff. Then you would get an idea how decent the gear really is.
    And FYI - you didn't break the bracelet - that little blade is meant to come off and can be better used as a striker when detached.

    The only way to build a useful survival kit is *first* you must put yourself in a situation, take notes what you need and what you didn't need, then go purchase decent functional items you wished you had while you were out in the wilderness, then go out and put yourself in a situation again. Then just keep repeating the process. If you aren't doing it that way, #fail.

    • @NEP_Chris
      @NEP_Chris  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s not always true. Main reason being that not all emergency situations are the same. You may need one item for one situation and it’s useless for another. There is no guaranteed way to predict what kind of situation you will be in and exactly what you will need.

      Bottle holder? You probably don't have a bottle to begin with.
      The credit card survival tools are a total non-brainer. No serious expert would consider them in a survival kit if they had a choise.
      The comment on the hinges of that box was perfectly valid and I think the poor design/poor quality also was shown enough,. What good would the box do with broken hinges?? Stuff will fall out.
      The carabiners... you can not possible have evern seen any of those to understand they are not to be trusted for any serious usage, climbing or not. They are crap, also they are very unlikely to help you with sleep, maintaining body heat, hydration or nourishment. Use them to build a shelter? LOL.
